But don't you think thats *supposed* to happen?

Why would there be a Dawnguard if the vampires never killed a single person in Skyrim?  Why would the guards make comments like "these vampires a becoming a real menace" if they worst thing they had to deal with was petty thievery?  Why would the townsfolk and travelers be so concerned about the dragons if their daily routines were unspoiled?  Why would the DB need to do anything if the Skyrim of tomorrow would be exactly like the Skyrim of today?

I'm not saying you shouldn't feel bad if an NPC you did a quest for gets killed by a dragon or something.  But isn;t that part of the game...why Akatosh bestowed the gift upon you in the first place?  So you can stop that from happening to other NPCs you like?

True, true. The game is being realistic. I am not denying that the massacure of the good (more or less) town's folk is not realistic. However, it is exhausting when a quest giver is hacked down right before you could get or complete a quest. I can appreciate the game's constant drive for carnage, but it is irritating sometimes. Realistically, the Dragon Born can be sick of people dying.

The world of Skyrim changed for me the moment I watched my favorite blacksmith die when she ran  into the ravenous appetite of a lurking vampire. It was heart wrenching. :crying:

Tsk, people complaining about death by dragons and vampires. I recently
ran past one of the farms near Riften and heard a bear roar. I did not
feel like killing it, so I just kept walking. Then I realized I was
travelling the wrong way and turned around, again passing the farm. I
heard the bear again, but this time also a NPC shout "somebody do
something!". So I went to the Snowshod farm and saw that the bear was
standing in the middle of a field of crops. It had killed two of the
farmers (one added by Interesting NPCs) and the third was on his knees. I
saved the third farmer, but still thought that was rather tragic. :(

I seem to be the only bear magnet in my game. The town's people must be conspiring agianst me for not dying in any of the dragon and/ or vampire attacks. I don't know how they could could get the bears to attack only me, but somehow they did it.  I could have also angered the bear gods.

I replaced non-LARP weapons mod with this one over the weekend and am quite happy with it. Blade of Woe looks deadly (like a hand sickle) and I tested it on Jarl Balgruuf and Co. the other night. Image IPB

There is also a new aMidianBorn Blade of Woe texture mod, though I have not added it yet. FYI

Downloaded that last night, and it looks good enough. Didn't see any visual glitches.

Have timescale up to 3 now, after Farkas decided to stand around outside my cage wondering what to do with himself (setting it to 3 instantly caused him to run to the switch). Now a game day takes only 8 hours real time; still way better than the default.

Alduin failing to appear at the beginning (timescale 1), NPCs occasionally refusing to move at navmesh waypoints (timescale 1 and 2) and texture load-in (timescale 1) are the only things I notice at low timescale settings. I think some people are disabling iPresentInterval and blaming timescale for the other reported woes. I've left iPresentInterval=1. My quests have been working correctly and all else seems well. Not increasing timescale unless I have to. In a way it's fun pushing the limits to find out what really happens. I'm not one to rely on hearsay.

I am Techless, so I respect the general hearsay of settings greater than five for safety, plus the game may be too tedious for me at such low rates.

One thing I have noticed is that reducing the timescale also seemingly reduces the size of Skyrim. It is supposed to be a larger land mass than the one based on RL16 sq miles, I believe; thus reducing the default also shrinks the time needed to get from A to B. With that, other mod settings may also require adjustments to fit the new scale (eg; Deadly Dragons spawns, Frostfall exposure, etc).

I recall posting a note to Gopher on the LPSA vids that almost dying from exposure thrice on the way from Solitude to Castle V at half scale seemed rather excessive. You might wish to dble-check other mod settings to retain continuity.

I think RND has problems when you change the time scale, other needs mod are the same, if you mess with the time scale sometimes they end up acting weird. I distinctly remember that one I used to have could be adjusted, don't remember its name, but I wasn't very fond of it either.

As for Gopher, I don't know like I said before he doesn't cover everything. There's a lot of stuff he doesn't do to his game that I do to mine and it still works fine. The only thing I don't bother with is changing uGrids.

Thanks guys; I don't use many gameplay-affecting mods so maybe that's why I have relatively few issues with my tweaks. I've no desire to use gameplay/combat overhauls, difficulty mods, etc. Mostly for me it's improved graphics (meshes and textures) and sounds. On a Dell 24" display the game looks so good I could climb through the monitor and actually be there.

Also, I understand your point about long game days Elhanan. I got annoyed in Oblivion with not having enough time at night to properly loot a single home; that's what got me started modifying timescale for longer days/nights.

Are Vanilla Bows just not flamboyant enough for you?
Check this out.

Oh and there is a mod for those of you upset by the lack of long bows in Skyrim.
Check this out.

Well now as for me I need a bow I just make my own. Don't care for the looks of them at all.

Ten things I've never done playing over 1000 hours of Skyrim and over a dozen DBs:

1 - Kill Paarthurnax
2 - Obey Vaermina and kill Erandur for the Skull of Corruption
3 - Buy more than one house in a single playthrough.
4 - Reveal Svana's location to Sibbi Black Briar.
5 - Kill Nilsine Shatter-Shield for Muiri during the DB questline
6 - Reach 70 in restoration skill line (and I don't use any healing potions...how do people do this? stand on a fire trap and spam the skill?)
7 - Remain a werewolf after curing Kodlak.
8 - Said "Battle-Born" when Idolaf Battleborn asks you what side you're on when you first meet him in Whiterun.
9 - Let Mogrul from Raven Rock live.
10 - Used bloodcursed arrows to blot out the sun.

Well now I'll have to admit that I've never
1. Killed Paarthunax
2. Revealed Svan's location-of course to my knowledge I haven't. Don't remember this quest.
3. Remained a Werewolf
4..said Battle-=Born Due to the fact that I never know what side I'm taking at the time.
5. Reached 70 in restoration. Don't really care for spells
6. You killed Mogrul the skooma sucker that's trying to get 1000 septums out of my hide.<LOL>

But for the most part I think I buy every house for which I can purchase in Skyrim. Reason being is that I've got so much gold from the upgrading and making of weapons, armor and potions might as well spend it on something.

Have yet to do the vamps quest line.  Had been playing through the Dragonborn though and I liked that one. Will have to do it earlier my next play through though.

Now I have replace my bow with the crossbow. Will have to admit that I was upset that we couldn't make our own like I thought we'd be able to. But I was happy that I could upgrade it and enchant it.<G>

Now as for the "heart stone" ore for which we can find I've yet to find out if it can be used for anything other than summoning that one creature. Forgot what it was now. But if any one knows if there is any other use for it other than summoning let me know.

Now the Stalhrim ore makes for some cool looking weapons and armor I like the textures on them there.

Also does anyone else have the Hearthfire DLC? Are the 3 houses for which you can build all the same? With pretty much the same choices for the way for which they can be built and the things you can put inside?

Saw this mod recently; might be of use:

As for crossbows, once you recover the various plans for the DG lass, she grants you the ability to make your own if desired.

You can craft crossbows, actually. I think you may need to do at least the first crossbow enhancement quest for Sorine, and you can only make them at the forge in Fort Dawnguard, but you can craft them. Bolts can also be crafted with that forge.

Well then I guess since I've not gotten to that part of the game currently that would answer why I've not been able to craft my own as of yet.Image IPB Thanks for letting me in on that there as I was under the impression that you could do it from any forge. And now I see I was wrong. Well wouldn't be the first time. <LOL>

Evidently, Heart stones are also used with the Staff Enchanter in the making of staves.

And while the homes in HF have similar base designs, I seem to remember that all the additions are varied, as well as some extras.

Imagine that you are showing these two trailers to someone who knows nothing about Elder Scrolls.

Skyrim Trailer

Elder Scrolls Online Trailer

Then ask them, the following two questions.

Which of these two games allows you to play as a female character?
Which of these two games allows you to play as different races?

If they answer Skyrim only allows you to play as human male whereas Elder Scrolls Online allows you to play as females and different races, I wouldn't be surprised.

The Skyrim trailer thankfully does show a bit of rogue, a bit of magic, a bit of warrior along with exploration. So I guess the trailer was a good representation of what is in the game. However, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people were put off thinking "Meh. No gender option. No racial option. Not for me."

Will the trailer/s for the next Elder Scrolls game (I'm referring to Elder Scrolls VI not Elder Scrolls Online) represent the gender and racial options that available in this game?

Skyrim is an amazing game. I'm so glad I was wrong.
However I had just completed Oblivion when I saw the Skyrim trailer.
It looked pretty amazing.

Then I thought to myself.

Oblivion gave me 10 different races and allowed me to play as either gender.

Skyrim only allows me to play as a Nord male ! Come on! What is that all about?

Seriously, that is the message that (all be it amazing) trailer sent.

I am not turning this into a gender or race issue (though you can if you want to:)).  I am saying flaunt features of the game, or otherwise consumers will assume that those features aren't in the game. Gender and race options are woth flaunting. Appearance customisation is worth flaunting. These are great features in not just Skyrim but many, many RPG's.
World of Warcraft is great at flaunting the many races and classes you can play as. It is good at letting you know that you can play as a female character too. You know this because of the amount of marketing that tells you such.

To be honest, I suspect it would depend on who I asked.

If I showed them to my mother(or anybody who knows very little of gaming) then yeah, I could see her coming to the conclusion that Skyrim is more limited in character creation in terms of gender and race.

A lot of gamers are aware that trailers have a habit of being poor indicators of what's in a game, however. It would not surprise me if somebody who knew a decent amount about gaming but not Elder Scrolls came to the conclusion that they didn't have enough information to make a call on it.

If you're serious about getting a game, you should be doing more than looking up a 3 minute hype video for it anyway, regardless of character creation.

@ Abraham : You're over analyzing things.

The Dragonborn is a single hero, one that really ought to be a Nord, or at least that's the most logical archetype. As for why that hero was represented as a male, well, there I might agree the our society tends to be a little bit comfortable that (martial) heroes are men whereas women tend to be depicted as sidekicks and romantic interests. In any event, I'd be surprised if a trailer for Skyrim did *not* depict a Nord.

As for ESO, there is not one hero, thus room for other representations beyond the traditional archetype. There were 3 heroes depicted in the trailer. Thus I would not credit ESO for making a more politically progressive trailer or anything like that.

Wake me up when a Sinhalese woman is depicted as a martial hero.

I can understand how someone might get that impression; however, that campaign is a case study in how to market games right. It went on to sell over 20 million copies, more than many of the top selling games of all time, like Super Mario World, Call of Duty, etc.

The iconic imagery of the Dragonborn character helped to drive early interest in the game and made the narrative compelling to consumers as you would see it in online ads, print, point of sale displays, TV spots, etc., and instantly know which game it was.

Those who were already fans of the franchise were quite familiar with how the game worked, poring over all the developer interviews, gameplay videos, etc. One of the earliest sets of images I recall seeing that made a big impression on me was the race presets from the character generator

I can't see where your saying that you're only allowed to play as a Nord male in Skyrim as I've played most of the races available as both male and female. Currently playing a Female high elf for which hates the arrogant Thalmor. I wish that the Thalmor would pay a visit to one of my two homes and see that I've got a Talos  statues in both of them Not only that I've been standing right in front of them and had on a Talos amulet and they didn't do a thing. Don't know why they didn't. After all I was trying to provoke them so I could stick them with my sword.<LOL>

Don't know about you but I think it is kind of expected to see the "hero" been a Nord. The Dragonborn is celebrated mostly amongst the Nords and no one else, maybe around some parts of Cyrodiil probably but not nearly as much as in Skyrim. It would not make sense to show an Altmer or something else as the hero. In reality I don't think they were really focusing on any of that, the game's name is Skyrim, it'd make sense that they'd want to show Skyrim and its culture on a trailer.

I don't know about the past games, but I really can't think of the Champion of Cyrodiil being a Breton or an Argonian, I can't think of the Nerevarine as being showcased as anything but a Dunmer. Even if those can be of other races, I wouldn't expect them to try to sell Nord(or better yet N'Wah) culture in Morrowind or some such nonsense. Next game will highlight whichever race's homeland we step into, most people already know about the large variety of choice in these games anyway.

EDIT: just noticed that there hasn't been an Imperial vs Stormcloak discussion lately. How strange, well I'm sure one will start sooner or later.

There's always a "default" option of the native race. An imperial dude was the face of TES IV, this time it's the male Nord. How little do you have to know about Elder Scrolls to know you can play different races and gender.

I sided with the Imperials but empathized with the Stormcloaks.

After meeting General Tullius, and Jarl elisif, it was obvious Elisif was the perfect puppet for the Legion and due to what I knew of Tullius' motives, her inexperience is going to be exploited.

Ulfric is a racist b****ard and even though I agree for a more independent Skyrim, the Stormcloaks winning would only lead to a Skyrim that repressed anyone who wasnt a Nord and with the Legion gone, would open up Skyrim to all the nasty folks trying to get in.

Mistakes were made on both sides, the war proved who was left, not who was right.

No, Ulfric is no racist and nowhere is it ever displayed that he is. The Dunmer thing doesn't really count, there's a lot of reasons why that is the way that it is and the Dunmer aren't any better anyway.

Siding with the Empire would leave Skyrim way more open than with the Stormcloaks. I wouldn't be surprised if the Empire was compromised on every level of its structure, just look at all the Imperial morons in Skyrim, they're all connected to the Thalmor in some way as evidenced by that party. That or they're corrupt bastards profiting of off other's problems. Look at those idiot nobles on the road, they call Skyrim a backwater and don't really care for it or its people.

Tullius may be a good commander and the sort of person the Empire needs, but there's one of him and many more of the other scumbags in the Empire. Besides, he doesn't really have much power either, the Thalmor want him at the embassy in the party and he has to show up. I'm also certain that Tullius was sent to Skyrim so he could not cause trouble in Cyrodiil, since he's one of the people who disagrees with the White Gold Concordat and who dislikes the Thalmor.

Many people say that but nothing Ulfric says or does in character provides any evidence that is true.
