If you wish to download mods, all three DLC will come in handy.
There are a ton of mods that you cannot use if you don't have certain DLC's.
At least this is what Youtubers' Gopher and BroDual keep saying.

I wont be happy until it looks like this guy's Skyrim =P
Some of those videos are impressive, but many of the water scenes look more like tropical Hawaii or Cayman Islands, rather than the cold north of Skyrim. Personally prefer my beautiful yet cold looking Skyrim, somewhat modded to look like the place I grew up in, which had snow 4 or 5 months of the year. As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Always get a kick out of Serana's constant need for attention. Went to help Azura, Serana prays at the altar. Talking to folks at Winterhold College, Serana stands between the npc and I, reading a book. Talk to someone else and Serana sits on a nearby chair or bench, or cooks, or mines ore. I love her.
In my ongoing experimentation I have timescale bumped to 4 now, as I was getting landscape rendering issues in The Reach and along the icy north coast (landscape mesh is there but is invisible so feels like I'm running into invisible walls). Another ridiculous engine issue - timescale determining how landscape meshes are rendered. It's a shame because all else was working fine.

This is true. One way to be sure is to start TESVEdit with all mods selected, and look at the file header for each plugin; it will list that plugin's masters revealing exactly which DLC are required. I think BOSS also reveals this info.

I actually haven't run into any issues with just Dawnguard and Hearthfire, as a lot of mods these days seem to have versions for the various DLC. I am planning on getting Dragonborn the next time it goes on sale(because we can't go more than about a month without a Skyrim Steam sale).
On a random note, I also started playing through Morrowind somewhat recently. I started the series with Oblivion and wanted to check it out. I'm finding it better than the later one in some regards, although certain combat mechanics did need to be killed with fire. Specifically the one where you can miss on what visually should have hit the target based on your weapon skill level.

A lot of them don't need the DLCs but there's a bunch that do. Some mod authors do not want to have to support 3 different versions of a mod, and I can understand how that would be an unnecessary problem. I personally agree with that stance, If I ever get the inspiration to do a mod or whatever, I'd do the same.

I'll just throw this out there for those who are curious. The Elder Scrolls Online folks sent me an extra code to invite a "friend" for this weekend's beta. If you want to check it out, let me know.

They sent me an extra code for the beta as well. I'll probably see if any of my friends want it, although none of them seem terribly interested in it. To be honest, I'm not terribly interested in it either after having played it. If I have enough time I might go through this weekend and grind out the starting island, see if it gets better after that.
I'll most likely end up giving my extra key away on here if people are interested.

^ It does. First time I did beta back in November I quit after a few hours. Few weeks ago got to level 7 and in open world and it's a totally different experience. From what I hear, the Launch version will make those starting islands optional.

Currently I am using 74 plug-ins; also have some that are not in use.

I'm down to 27 mods in Skyrim. But I did have upwards of about 70 tacked on at one time. I've probably play tested or experimented with twice that number though.

19 mods. Most useful one (by far) for my spellsword is "Dual Hand Combo Hotkey."

Honestly I just kept around....10 mods running to be honest.
The most I ever saw was my friend who had 140 running at once.
That was...insane

Depends on what you look at: I have ~70 mods (mostly texture/mesh/sound) according to NMM's mod list, but ~50 plugins (with two disabled). Then there are the three I don't use in NMM; SKSE, ENBoost, and FXInjector. If you count gameplay-affecting mods, I have about 5: FSS better bards, Marriable Serana, Jiub's Opus Quest Markers, Berenziah Quest Markers, and my modified game settings via the CK. I also have a console batch file called Bounty which wipes my current bounty with all holds, in preperation for what's coming. ![]()
Am currently running dwemer ruins, questing for Winterhold College, and side-questing for Dawnguard. Serana has lately been good at posing nearby when I take screenshots.

My own personal modding goal is to use this experience for the purpose of learning the basics for modding future games, and for creating an essentials list. Mods such as Climates of Tamriel, Realistic Water Two, Static Meshes, aMidianBorn textures, etc go a long way to making the game pop for me, as well as a few mods that correct bugs and rules of which I differ in opinion. Of my 74+ mods, I guess that list would be between 20 - 40.

I would say my goal has been lowered to merely "deepening my in-game the experience." There was a time when I thought I wanted to dabble in modding, and I even spent some time in the CK to learn the basics. But, I quickly learned that the time investment, when bounced against my real world time constraints, would keep me from doing so with any level of proficiency. So, I've resolved to calling myself merely a mod user.

I'm probably running a total of around 65 mods right now based on the list in my NMM, plus a few that aren't listed there such as SKSE and ENB. There are a few cases of one mod being 3 or 4 different files, however. I'm not sure how many unique mods I am running.
Most of them are improvements to graphics and environmental effects. I do also have a mod to try and make destruction magic a little less bad in terms of damage compared to weapon users, as well as one that adds a couple of new spells.

heh! This is what I meant by modding; no Toolkit for this Techless One.

I do really basic stuff with the Creation Kit, like make my own NPCs, items, game tweaks, and so on, and even that takes quite a bit of time, so I can only imagine how much more time consuming it would be to create more in-depth modules. Outside of the stuff I create for myself, I only use the unoffical patches, SkyUI, and improved texture/lighting mods, so my mod list isn't very high.

I've got a lot of mods like 220 or something, been tweaking my load order and everything in general to make it work. We'll see if this experiment works out when I start a playthrough, haven't done so yet because I'm waiting for some stuff to get updated.
As for CK, I don't use it, nor do I do much with TES modding in general. However, I do use GECK to add items to leveled lists and adjust items that some authors just decide to put in containers instead of integrating them into the world. I also use FNVEdit to merge mods that are mergeable. I stick mostly with Fallout when it comes to modding.

Last night I got that Dawnguard bug with Sorine where she wants me to go to a Solstheim home to get dwarven plans, though I've not even started the Dragonborn quests yet. So that quest is on hold for the time being. Finished up the dwemer forge quest with Katria at least.
This game seems to render dungeons beyond what we are allowed to see, so my water settings are rather punishing while in dungeons having water (many of them it seems). My frame rate dives whenever my camera moves toward the water plane; running around while looking up at the ceiling helps, and the problem goes away while I'm underwater. It's not an issue outdoors, even when I'm surrounded by rivers and waterfalls. *shrug*
My monster skyrim.ini experiment is a success too, btw. It's at about 46k filesize with most of the options from the console saveini command. I had to comment out a few options that cause red menu textures, and it appears that enabling any of the extra grass settings (though visible and editable in the console) causes grass to not render. Odd. Gamebryo is a headscratcher at times.

Are you having trouble deciding between Stormcloaks and Imperials?
This Shoddy Cast video might help.
It explains the backstory of Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak.
Shoddy Cast has done: lore videos for Elder Scrolls and Fallout universes, and he has produced many great videos concerning Elder Scrolls Online.
Oh by the way, did you know that Shoddy Cast contributed towards Elder Scrolls lore too? Yes! He is part of Elder Scrolls lore.

Good video, the person narrating is really good. Though I wish they had placed both sides of the conflict, maybe they might do one on General Tullius or something. I don't think it was biased but it'd be very cool if they did one on the Empire's motivations, that is unless they did one already. Look forward to the one about Red Eagle, although I really have nothing nice to say about the Forsworn, bunch of psychopaths, cultists and murderers that they are.
