I was actually discussing this very topic with a friend yesterday. I usually side with the Stormcloaks, even though I play as an Imperial. Go figure.

I know Stormcloak has his own selfish ambitions, but the Empire bending their knee to the Thalmor keeps me from siding with them. I know they had to do it or the Empire would have been destroyed, but it just doesn't sit well with me. Now, if I had the chance to march on the Thalmor with the Empire sometime after the war with the Stormcloaks had been fought and won in Skyrim (like Tullius eludes to at the end questline if you side with the Empire), that would be a different story. I think having the Dragonborn in their ranks would turn the tides of battle. Perhaps a whole different campaign wouldn't have been doable in the game, but killing every Thalmor agent in their embassy and razing it to the ground would have been a good start.

I don't know if you can tell or not, but I don't like the Thalmor.

I love the overall ambiguity present in Imperials Vs Stormcloaks setting. You can easily justify actions of whichever side you please.

If you wanna get all boring, clever, objective and detached, trying to ensure a strong Empire is " the smart thing to do". On the other hand and much more importantly, however,  SKYRIM FOR NORDS RKGLHYAAAA!!

Overall, I think it propably makes the best and most credible portrayal of politics behind a conflict video games have ever seen. It is a juicy different-shades-of-gray setting that really doesn't deserve the hmm, selection bias first few minutes of the game present in this regard. I would have loved to have much more civil war -related content present in game. DLC devoted to it perhaps! I would have also liked it if the whole Dragonborn thing had been a sidequest,Civil War the main quest, and not the other way around.

...I can't believe they stopped releasing DLC.Skyrim remains one of the most played single player games in Steam even today. People would love to buy more.

edit, actually checked it out, turns out that at the time of writing this,it actually *is* the most played single player game in Steam atm. Goddamn.

The problem with the Empire at least for me is that if you side with them, you'll find out that most of its important supporters are scumbags, fools and puppets. If you ask me there's only two people I like from the Empire, that's Tullius and Rikke, and I don't feel that fighting for two people is worth it, especially when fighting for them means nothing as they can't really do much to make the Empire change.

As for DLC, I don't know what happened but I suspect they didn't want Skyrim competing with ESO, that or the problems with the PS3 screwed up the deadline.

Yeah I dunno. I can't imagine that being the case. One more DLC released around..approximately,,say, right now would have only helped ESO I think. Specially if it had been some sort of a tie-in or an introduction. You know, ancient ruins where we discover these texts from millenia back that explain how blabla buy ESO blabla. I can imagine something PS3 related, or some diabolical misfire with DLC contract they had with Microsoft or something like this. Maybe most likely option is that the team just got put to work Elder Scrolls VI, new Fallout or something.  If it is something they chose to do, as opposed to something they had to do, it was very foolish I think. There'd be plenty of life left for Skyrim still. Few more DLCs, perhaps a HD version for new gen consoles. They could have kept at it for much longer.

Depends on the who is the Dragonborn

My first character was an Altmer who was adept in destructive magic.

I played the civil war quest-line and killed all my allied soldiers through friendly fire. Too many fireballs being randomly spammed.

So I doubt having this fighter in the ranks would be much of an advantage.

Good video, the person narrating is really good. Though I wish they had placed both sides of the conflict, maybe they might do one on General Tullius or something. I don't think it was biased but it'd be very cool if they did one on the Empire's motivations, that is unless they did one already. Look forward to the one about Red Eagle, although I really have nothing nice to say about the Forsworn, bunch of psychopaths, cultists and murderers that they are.

In series 1, there was a video about the Imperial Race.

There was also a nice 3 part sub series in series 2 about Talos which gives you an insight into the Empire's motivations.

Anyway. Here is a list of Shoddy Cast Playlists (since listing loads of videos takes up a lot of space).

Elder Scrolls Lore Series 1 (Aedra, Daedra, Races, Guilds all the basics you need to know to immerse yourself in the Elder Scrolls Universe)

Elder Scrolls Lore Series 2 (There are a few videos that Morrowind and Skyrim fans will appreciate)

Elder Scrolls Online discussions

Fallout Lore Series

Shoddy Cast will cover more video games in the future no doubt. For now it's Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

Skyrim is many hours long. You can put over 200 hours into that game if you want to do every quest, every DLC quest, get every collectable, max out every skill etc. That is a really long game.

Angry Joe has something to say about today's games "Four hours! FOUR HOURS!!!!!!" So in a way you're getting 50 games in one neat package.

And yet, many people would love to have even more. ;p  Over 30k concurrent people play it via Steam alone, on daily basis. 20 million copies sold. If they were to release more DLC, I recon good couple of million people wouldn't let them having some 200 hours worth of mileage come between them and credit card. Ofc this is pretty idle what iffiing, since no new DLC is coming. :l

Okay anyone else have a real book problem?

I literally snag every single one I get my hands on.

My goal is to use a Hearthfire house to store all my books eventually.

As for right now I think its kinda amusing to have like a dozen copies of one book, but still grab more of them.

I collect books, and if a quest takes them from me I get them back with the console. Part of the reason is I edit most of the books to use smaller font (font size 16) because the default is absolutely huge on a large display. My character is therefore a walking library, and I fear there aren't enough bookshelves to hold it all.

I also use a glowing books mod that causes unread/undiscovered books to glow (or, if inside a container, be preceded by an asterisk). In my backpack, this mod causes books I've read to be followed by an eye icon. Unread books have no icon.

Got all of mine in a Hearthfire house, but checking whether I've already got a copy or not whenever I go back with a potentially new one is a bit of a nuisance. I use a mod to make them fit on the shelves properly.

I collect books, too. Especially the Wolf Queen ones, because they look great on bookshelves.

On a sidenote, I was looking for some new artwork to go in my master bathroom, and found aurora borealis prints. I am hella tempted to use one (or two!), to forever remind me of Skyrim.

Do you notice that by level 25ish you really stop having a hard time with foes?

I mean by the end game THE only people who gave me a challenge were the Ebony Warrior and Karstag.

Kinda wanted to put both in a room and watch them duke it out.

Though personally I quite enjoy it when mooks are really easy to take down, but the bosses take work.

Got all of mine in a Hearthfire house, but checking whether I've already got a copy or not whenever I go back with a potentially new one is a bit of a nuisance. I use a mod to make them fit on the shelves properly.

I did something similar back in oblivion, turned the mansion in Skingrad into a library containing one (and only one) of every book in the game, arranged neatly on the shelves in proper order.

Doing this manually on X-box proved time consuming, to say the least... as does the loading time for save files in the mansion!

Anyway, my preferred solution to making sure I had every book was to store all looted books in a chest set aside specifically for that purpose to get them in alphabetical order, then occasionally I'd compare the chest's list of books with a list I'd printed from the wiki book list, then place one of each missing book I'd found on the shelves, then update the list, crossing off every book in the game one by one until I was done.

At the moment all my skyrim books are stashed in a bedside drawer in my Whiterun pad, I don't think I'll bother arranging on shelves them since I can read them without removing them from containers in this game.

Try installing ASIS, it is a customizable way to increase spawns and improve the enemy AI, so enemies use healing potions, heal their allies, and they will have access to all the spells from any spell mods installed. There can also be a lot more enemies, so you will see some epic battles. With Deadly Combat, enemy mages become able to use their warding spells to reflect your shouts right back at you, which makes them a lot more challenging.

I'd recommend OBIS instead of ASIS. ASIS is good and all but it is outdated and has only been recently worked on, a lot of people had a lot of problems with it. On the other hand OBIS does some of what ASIS does and adds a lot more, especially when it comes to making bandits more unique.

Some strange names, though. I know OBIS stands for Organized Bandits In Skyrim, can't fathom what ASIS means. Skyrim Immersive creatures is also an option, which is a mod similar to Monster Mod but better, because it is lore friendly and the monsters it adds feel like they belong, plus whatever you don't like you can get rid of. For example I don't like the Dwarven Mechanical dragon so I just don't use it.

ASIS stands for Automatic Spells and Increased Spawns, it's massively customizable, so you can exclude specific types of enemies, specific types of spells from your spell mods or potions, and you can determine for yourself how to allocate the spawn rates and NPC potions so that the difficulty of combat encounters is tailored to your preferences. You can have slightly increased challenge compared with vanilla, all the way to nearly every combat encounter transforming into massive, epic battles with dozens of enemies, as well as random encounters between opposing armies that turn Skyrim into a huge battleground.

After reading a bit about OBIS, it seems to be an entirely different type of mod.  OBIS simply adds lots of additional bandits to the game, no? ASIS is quite different. It uses the skyproc patcher to extract all the spells and NPCs from your other installed mods and then generates a new .esp file that assigns these spells, determines spawn rates for every single enemy in the game and adds healing, stamina and magicka potions to the appropriate types of NPCs you select, so they will use these during combat, and mages will use healing spells on their allies. When you add a new mod containing new NPCs or spells, simply run the patcher again and you can generate a new ASIS.esp file that incorporates the new actors and forms.

I've been using v1.30 since 2012 with absolutely no problems, together with quite a lot of other mods installed. It runs so well in fact, and improves the combat difficulty and enhances the scope of the game to such an extent that I doubt I could ever go back to playing the game without ASIS.

Quite different but similar in a way, at least in the way that it increases bandit spawns. It can be used with ASIS as well, but I think its best if you choose one. Too many spawns can wreck a game, especially if you've got mods that have scripts and affect NPCs. I prefer Immersive Patrols for my battles, it is not as complex, adds in patrols from different factions and still has its battles.

ASIS is great, but I don't think it'd be a particularly good idea to use it with mods I've got. Someone did update it as well, but its sort of hidden the comments section for that mod and its also in beta if I remember correctly.

With the glowing books mod, any book I've already read doesn't glow, so it makes keeping track of collected books much easier.

Looks like I can safely skip ASIS and OBIS since my game is modded for no respawns (same as Oblivion) other than script-based road spawns. I don't feel it's necessary to have a fight every 10 feet, and it gives me a sense of accomplishment to make the countryside safe to wander.

Finished up the mage college last night; meeting El Stormo always makes me laugh, and it's always good to take out Ancano even though he's such an obvious railroad job. He's a bit like Anders in DA2; you know something bad's going to happen but you're powerless to stop it. I always used the console to remove his clothing so he would be shamed in my presence, then I left his corpse in the magic font after the battle. Might get some use out of him after all.

Thus far I'm still killing Thalmor on sight, when the game allows it. I wish there was a DLC that let us take the fight to them.

There are some Thalmor mods, though I do not use them.

However, the Cutting Room Floor mod does return some omitted Thalmor materials  back to the game. Thus far I have enjoyed the greater majority of events left unseen from the Vanilla experience. Just note that once installed, it should remain in that session.

So much this.

I usually don't loot the armour off of humanoid enemies, it seems kinda disrespectful to the dead to steal their boots and clothes.

Thalmor however... I don't just strip them naked after smiting them, I arrange the corpses in as embarrassing pose as I can, just to rub it in.

And if I can find some grizzly bears to kill then add to the scene, so much the better.  I just wish I could send Thalmor HQ some photos.

This guy here has the right idea:

I kill all Thalmor on site as well. I have a mod (More NPCs) that puts many more Thalmor patrols in the wild, which gives me all the opportunities I crave to beat them down. Funny thing is, if there are Stormcloaks nearby, they always join in.

Immersive Creatures also adds "Immersive Thalmor Patrols" and by that I mean that they put a bunch of Thalmor with trained goblins walking around Skyrim. I mostly kill them all but its hard at early levels, since I use vampire characters. They have fire spells and the sun isn't much help either, when I do kill them at low levels I feed on them until they die.

Bastards deserve what they get. Damn Imperial holds put a bounty on you, bunch of apologists is what they are. What do they care if a patrol of those morons gets slaughtered by an unaffiliated group or individual.
