GTA is trash

That's why you're supposed to play better games like Saint's Row.

Also, who cares what the "default" race/character type is? I have 6 playthroughs on Skyrim going and NONE are Nords. So there! :P

The games tend to break immersion when you're not the default race. A dark elf woman asked if my dark elf character was racist against dark elves. It doesn't stop at Skyrim, the list goes on.

Dark Elves can't be racist against Dark Elves?

In real life there are people who are racist against their own race.

It's really, really bizarre, but it happens.

Saints Row is a poor mans GTA.

Let me get this straight:

Dark Elves can't be racist against Dark Elves.

Got it.

That's some conclusion you stumbled upon. Why would that be the first thing to be on that elf's mind? Wouldn't she much rather warn the player that Windhelm isn't such a friendly place for their kind? Keep in mind, the character only ever gets acknowledged as a dark elf by a drunk Nord, Ulfric and his confidante (each with a single line of dialogue) in an apparently racist and oppressive city.

Now, if she elaborated and said that outsider dunmer look down on dunmer who "submit" to Windhelm (similar to Dalish-City Elf relations in Dragon Age), then it would make sense.

What about in crucial plot points?

As of SR3, not really.

Lol @ people complaining about "immersion" breaking.

I just go on Skyrim and kick ass with a big katana and a bow.

If that is how you play the game, check this out.

Oh and here is another epic video.

That would be really smart writing.

I think that has real world precedent too.

In Japan there was the whole worries about globalisation.

Those who remained "traditional" often looked down to those who "submitted" western values.

As the traditional individuals grew older they felt less at home in their own country. They felt like outsiders.

It was in a book I read ages ago about peoples fears of globalisation.

Sorry this isn't the best real world parallel...

It's interesting how the Samurai viewed westernization. They also saw it as a way for their power to diminish (Guns over katanas? Shameful display!). It has in-universe precedent as well. It's sort of the same situation in Morrowind where Ashlanders view everyone else as pseudo-dunmer.

There is also the Crowns and Forbearers conflict in Hammerfell.

This isn't due to the setting, but is due to the ham-fisted writing.

There's a problem with character depth and responding well to all the variables (no easy task) in Skyrim but if it's the one you encounter when you first enter Windhelm IIRC I didn't get asked that when playing a dark elf, but did with other characters (including when with a dark elf follower, so it could still be done a bit better).

Neither did I and I took my Dunmer there specifically to tell her that I hated Dark Elves.  I was disappointed.

I just role around riding Derpy with LotR weapons, bad*** armor, and with my half naked female followers that carry all my crap. Nobody ever is left standing where I go.

Would've been better still if my dunmer follower had stuck an arrow in the guy's head. I can't help thinking it would've been in character for her (Jenassa).

Any way to get Dertheekus outta the Darkwater cave after I kill all the Falmer? He just keeps saying "yes?" or "tidings"
