Dude, I didn't even know what the hell an Argonian WAS until a few days ago.

And WHY do so many people like them?

The idea of role playing something completely different perhaps, same with the Khajit and the Charr in Guild Wars. I've already got my Charr character mapped for Guild Wars 2 whenever it comes out.

I actually prefer role playing someone completely non human than pseudo human races like dwarves or elves.

To each their own,  I like Khajit and Argonians as NPCs but I will never play as either.  Just don't find the thought of playing as a talking lizard or cat that appealing but then again   I have been playing as an orc for the first time after owning Oblivion GOTY edition for three years now and I am loving being an orc so you never know.

Would you Elder Scrolls veterans mind walking me through what in the hell The Elder Scrolls even are?

What are the Elder Scrolls?

These powerful tools of prophecy and divination, the prize of the
Empire, tell of every event that ever has happened or will happen. The
Cyrodilic Moth priests, who are their keepers, invoke the Elder Scrolls
by ritually attuning them to a specific time or space and attempt to
interpret the glyphs that form upon their surface.

The Scrolls are believed to be kept in the Imperial City and may be
stored in the Hall Of Records, which is itself likely to form part of
the Imperial Palace.

The Moth priests belong to a monastic order founded by Tiber Septim
and dedicated to the god Julianos, the Cyrodilic Divine whose sphere is
'literature, law, history, and contradiction'. It is likely that they
form part of the Nibenese Cult of the Ancestor Moth.

Oooh, danke.

So, does anyone want to make suggestions as to what race I should play?

I'm thinking Imperial. From what I hear, they're a great beginner class because they can do just about anything. Maybe not as good as the rest(barring being rich bathturds) but that's what I've heard.

I plan to use archery, sword and board, and some magic, so I'm hoping for something that's all encompassing, rather than something that specializes in specifics(ex- Bretons and magic).

I suggest you try out all ten races and see which playstyle you want. Still, the game's not that strict in what you can do.

Based on past Imperial bonuses, I can bet that Imperials will likely have the higher levels in Speechcraft in Skyrim than in combat or magic.

Eh. I'm Argonian or Khajit. I am going to try out Nord and Orc for Skyrim, though.

For my first playthru, I'm going to go against my usual role-playing whims and simply choose my race based on its racial skills. I'm leaning towards Argonian at the moment. (Health regen, disease resistance, underwater breathing!)

But I still have my eye on Imperial.    Just waiting for a better explanation of their listed racial skill (find more coins when looting: how much more? is it significant enough to matter?)

I don't know why, but I like Fallout 3 in first person because I play it more as a shooter. But when it comes to melee RPG, I prefer third person like Oblivion.

Melee is rarely done well in first person. The only game I've played to do it well was Dark Messiah of Might and Magic from Arkane. There was a rumour that Arkane did some work with Bethesda on Skyrim because they're now part of the same group but apparently they didn't. Hopefully Bethesda have improved on it anyway.

I think another part of the reason I'm backing Imperials is because being a Prince(albeit one that isn't rich in any way, shape, or form), I can associate with them better. That and the whole charisma bit.

Plus, if I'm going to be doing archery, I'm gonna need all the money in the World to purchase arrows IF you can and WHERE you can(since apparently, archery is powerful in Skyrim. Thus, arrows are a rarity).

Oh, and I plan to play Skyrim in the first person perspective. It would be my first first person RPG.

I just wish we could ride horses in first person. *sadface*

Also, WHERE'S THE HORSE ARMOR!? CAUSE I'M NOT PAYING 5 DOLLARS FOR THAT.

*already knows they confirmed they'll never do that again*

Arrows are cheap and you can recover them from dead enemies, even more if you get a particular Archery Perk.

First Person Archery from Horseback.

Make it happen for the future, Bethesda.

Eh...I think the greatest strength Imperials have over other races is that their chances of winning speech challenges are higher. Wood elves have a high bonus in archery than Imperials.

Personally, I don't think money or common iron arrows are a problem in these games.

But, roleplay your favorite Imperial character. The game doesn't punish you for it, just delays you.

Cool, cool.

As an Imperial, are there any races that may have a problem with me?(Racism is bad, they should feel bad)

The Nords do. The game is set at the time some Nords desire to break away from the Empire. The secessionist faction is called the Stormcloaks, named after Ulfric Stormcloak, the rebellious jarl of Windhelm. They're in direct opposition with another faction, the Imperial Legion, who wants to keep Skyrim in the Empire. Being an Imperial, you'd probably be more loyal to the Legion, but you'll still be able to join the Stormcloaks if you want.

Interesting, very interesting.

Is there a possibility of joining both(for their questlines), or is that totally out of the question?

Unknown, but very likely not. Based on the game achievements, joining one faction excludes the other as ending the rebellion questline involves capturing the faction's home city.

King in the North!

*ahem*

The various races tend to all have their little rivalries and hatreds, alliances and truces. At the end of the day it doesn't matter that much from anything other than a RP perspective, at least in previous games. Skyrim could be different I guess, but I doubt it.

The biggest difference, as has been stated, is how people initially perceive you, and as an Imperial most races tend to like you well enough (again, unless things have changed). Except for Dunmer. Dunmer hate pretty much everyone else. Beast races, conversely, tend to get spat on -by- everyone else.

In past games Nords have actually had an okay relationship with the Empire, but this rebellion will probably throw a spanner in the works of that in some places. Still, I expect you'll get a good enough reception in the Imperial friendly Nord towns and cities.

I figured dragons was obvious, hah.

Big Bad is probably some huge dragon, now that I think about it.

But any groups of people, things like that.

Aside from Alduin and his dragons?

Dragon priests, necromancers, demon worshipers, vampires, daedra, and dwarven machinery.

Well, the big dragon boss will probably be Alduin, the World Eater. Unless there is a big twist.

People wise it can depend on where your loyalties lie. In previous games each faction questline has led to a fight with a big boss of sorts (pretty much), The Morag Tong versus the Dark Brotherhood in Morrowind, the Mages Guild versus the Nercromancers in Oblivion etc.

Main story-wise there are two other likely candidates:

-Daedra (or demons), or rather Daedra Lords. These guys usually just meddle in the affairs of mortals, and even offer quests, but there are a few nasty ones such as the guy who orchestrated the Oblivion crisis and almsot destroyed the world in that game.
-New guys! Beth love coming up with new antagonists, naturally it's hard to predict what form these will take, but judging from some of the stuff I'm hearing it could involve the Nord rebellion, maybe the Witch from Solitude if she's still kicking.

But there isn't really some main nasty who keeps coming back for more in the series.

Edit: Alduin

Alduin is the main bad guy in Skyrim. See the dragon in this picture? That's him.

He commands the dragons you defeat in Skyrim. Eventually, as the champion chosen by the gods, you'll face him.

More of him, I won't say. You're too new to learn his role in TES mythology.

Alduin sounds like a chach who needs to get decapitated.

So, tell me. How does weight work? As in items have a weight to them(I think), and it probably affects something. Speed or stamina would be my guess.
