I've been doing a pretty good job at respecting my oath to go video-game-free until Skyrim but I must confess I totally cracked this morning and played me 5 hours of Oblivion :).

I do hope the story in Skyrim will be more engaging yet without that exaggerated sense of urgency ; what I mean by that is in Oblivion, there was a discrepency between the fact that you're out there doing side quests pretty much all the time because this is what the game is all about and the fact that Baurus, the Kvatch guards and co keep making you feel that the main quest must be dealt with immediately, like it's an episode of 24 or something. I know you have to have a main story arch but I'd like one where the side quests and random adventuring merge more gracefully. The imminent end of the world sounds a bit aloof within the concept of a non-linear sandbox game.

I'm starting to wonder if I should put down Skyrim the day it comes out and wait to play it until AFTER I beat Revelations.

I'm guessing a big part of the main quest is going to be "collect X dragon souls in order to do Y," so if you want to learn lots of dragon shouts, you will be inadvertently completing part of the main quest.

Also it seems that the PC plays a huge part in the civil war and I imagine there will be a point where you must choose which side to support.

Well, dragons showing up are random, right?

There's got to be a few that are predetermined.

The civil war may be a subplot, but it is actually quite significant since the Empire like it was in Oblivion, does not exist anymore. The Empire is basically reduced to Cyrodiil + Skyrim, while the Altmer & Bosmer re-united into the Aldmeri Dominion and actually fought some wars with the Empire (according to the books from Grey Keyes).

The biggest change, though, is Morrowind being gone completely. After Vivec's disappearance, the Ministry of Truth crashed down and turned Vvardenfell into an inland sea, and the Argonians invaded, killed every Dunmer they encountered and took over the country. The remains of the Dunmer either fled to Soltstheim or Skyrim.

Bretons and Redguards defected as well, and meanwhilst they sacked Orsinium.

So basically without Skyrim, the Empire is a sitting duck. The thousand year old mages on the Summurset Isle would like nothing better than reinstate the power of the Elves like it was in the Merethic Era and finally unfold their plans to undo Mundus and regain their divinity.

Not to mention while Tamriel is divided to the max, there is still the threat of Akavir taking advantage and invading... TES VI will probably deal with that.

This makes me think playing an Imperial and keeping Skyrim within the Empire is a good thing.

Now that I think of it, the battle between "Dragonborn" and "Alduin" could actually be symbolic for the battle between Men and Mer.

Alduin is the northern aspect of the prime Elven god, while the Dragonborn could be a Shezarrine (avatar of Lorkhan, the prime human god).

List of Shezarrines (taken from TES lore forum):

* Shezarr/Shor/Lorkhan: The Missing God, champion of men, who was killed by the Padomaic Spirits who had become trapped in Mundus. Being immortal, he wasn't really dead, and sent avatars to aid men and take revenge on the elves.
* Pelinal Whitestrake/Harrald Hariy-Breeks/Hans the Fox/Divine Crusader: Many different Shezarrines who went under the same alias.
* Avatar of Shezarr: The being who visited Alessia on her deathbed in White Gold Tower to make her a saint. Known to be a Shezarrine.
* Wulfharth/Ash-King/Ysmir: The first "Underking", who was at least three beings: the ruler of ancient Skyrim, the undead ash king who fought at Red Mountain, and the advisor of Tiber Septim who was trapped in the Mantella.
* Hjalti/General Talos Stormcrown/Tiber Septim/Zurin Arctus/Underking: The commander who became an emperor, Hjalti Early-Beard, the mortal Talos and Tiber Septim were likely separate individuals. Arctus, Septim's battlemage, was killed by trapping the Shezarrine's soul in the Mantella. He later rose as the "traditional" Underking featured in Daggerfall, who seemed like a combination of Wulfharth and Arctus due to the Oversoul situation.
* Talos (Divine)/Wulf/The Prophet of Anvil: The One Who Joined the Eight to Become Nine. When Tiber Septim achieved CHIM and supposedly ascended, "Talos" was added to the Imperial Pantheon to be worshipped as a god. This effectively returned Shezarr to his original prominence in the pantheon. Some claim that Talos wasn't considered a god until the Warp in the West changed history, but I can't find an official source and it's likely that he was simply retconned in after Battlespire, like the Cyrodils/Imperials. Wulf and "The Prophet", two avatars of Talos, are both obvious Shezarrines.
* Champion of Cyrodiil: Seeing as how the player character from Oblivion becomes Whitestrake reincarnated in Knights of the Nine, this leads me to the conclusion that the Hero is actually a Shezarrine.

Ironically, the hero of Oblivion is most powerful hero so far... aside from being Champion of Cyrodiil, (s)he is also a Shezarrine and at the same time Daedric Prince Sheogorath.

Here's a Skyrim Fan Fic I wrote for my English class. Tell me what you think!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Slogging up an old mountain pass, Arlano Revada squinted for signs of the cave. Although it was an especially cold day in the Northern Kingdoms, the aging warrior wasn’t shivering. He couldn’t shiver because his heart was pounding from anticipation, for he knew he was close. This was the first time in over a decade that he might have to kill a man.

He wasn’t a murderer, but some gambling debts forced him to hunt down a thief as repayment. He could have payed by giving them his sword, but he knew the gold inlays alone were worth triple his debt. The sword was worth much more than money to him though; it was a legacy of a noble house and family long dead, save for him. Besides, he wasn’t ever sure he could sell it. His father once spoke to him about how the blade was loyal only to House Revada, and no one but a Revada could wield it.

A heated argument the day before was the reason he had to fight again. His loaners made him choose between giving up his sword or capturing a thief who had robbed them and was now holed up in a mountain cave. He chose the harder option because the sword was too precious to him. By the next morning he had set off, hoping he could return to town by nightfall.

By this time he could make out the cave’s mouth through the snow. The cave was little more than a bent crack on the side of the mountain, but enough for for a person to hide in.

After peering in the came and not seeing anything, he started to step inside. As soon as he did he heard falling rocks behind him and spun around. He now faced a man drawing a bow. Instinctively he dashed into the cave as an arrow flew past him.

Pressed against the cave walls, he panted as he thought out his next step. If he could lure him near the cave entrance he could slice him in two.

A yell of “YOU IDIOT!” interrupted his thoughts. He now heard about four people arguing outside. One of them he recognized to be his loan shark Mablar.

Arlano realized what was going on. His creditors had decided to kill him away fro the eyes of the town guard and take his possessions. The thief story was a ruse to get him to leave town and show up for the ambush. Angered by the realization, he shouted “Come in and fight me, you cowards!”

After yelling he remained still so that he could hear any forthcoming attack. He tightened his grip on the worn leather handle of his sword at the sound of pebbles moving around the corner.

Leaping around the corner, he caught a mercenary off-guard with a strike to the neck. He dashed forward and knocked down the other two warriors. While impaling one, the other bashed his leg with a hammer. A sickening crack and a gasp was the sound made as Arlano fell onto his back.

He now gazed up into the warm midday sky. Mablar stood over him. He no longer felt his familiar sword, and wondered why it had allowed defeat. As the splitting maul was raised he closed his eyes for the last time, and then the grizzled old warrior was no more.

Mablar grinned as he picked up Arlano’s regal sword. “25 Gold at least!” he thought. As a calculating man not prone to sharing, he left his wounded lackey behind. As he walked away he gazed upon the blade’s luster. This admiration made him oblivious to the iced-over slate he stepped on, and he slipped. He fumbled the sword and fell chest-first on the tip.

No one ever recovered the Sword of Revada. It was lost in a snow drift, preserved for the nonexistent hands of another Revada family member.

"Not bad" is the greatest compliment my writing has ever received. :crying:

It's short because I go to great lengths doing only the bare minimum. :P

That's impressive. A 60k word novel. And everyone's a critic. However most of my poems and scripts get positive feedback from the ppl I show them to. But that's just cause I'm good at picking ppl XD Negative is good tho, that way you can improve...or rage

The 60k novel is kind of like a super-long fanfic, lol. It's basically a Hardy Boys book. I'm actually about 50k into another, completely original one that's going to be...probably 100k when I'm finished. I'm having trouble finding the drive to finish it, though.

So I did a quick read on the Bethesda forums about blocking with just one sword and no shield.

Now WHY would you want to do that.

Role playing reasons or breaking out of jail and only having a sword as a weapon.

Eh. I'd rather have my shield, but that's obvious.

Speaking of which, is there any way we can quickly switch item sets without having to switch items individually?

Say I've got my bow out, I see a few enemies, take one out, and the rest come charging in, making me want to pull out sword and shield.

Is there a way I can press ONE button to pull out my favorite sword and shield combo instantly?

Yes. You can "favorite" items and spells, so you just open a kind of quick-menu and chose them. Don't quote me on that, but I think Todd pulled out a shield and a sword at the same time using the favorite system in a video... I'm not certain, though.

Hammerfall and High rock have defected? The only defection I remember are the southern elves and the lizards. Morrowind... well...

I was under the impression that like Skyrim, Elswyr, Hammerfall and High Rock are still Empire territory, but it's an uneasy time.

Also, good analysis on the CoC. Bane of Oblivion+Slayer of King of Worms+Listener of Dark Brotherhood+Shezzarine+Deadric Mad God= Boss
