Hmm, didn't know about that. I'll have to try that one sometime.

Half the fun has been ruined for you though. The best part was not seeing it coming and ending up in the middle of the ocean!

I'd never do it normally though; there's an abandoned house to sleep in half a block away, for free.

You know what would be awesome? if when you sleep in places like that, people steal stuff from you.

I fully agree with you. As for me don't normally have to pay for places to sleep as I usually try to buy a  house quick as I can for storing things for which I don't want to carry around and I'm waiting to sell. Not to mention the fact that I've got lots of places I can sleep for free as it is.

So anyone decided on what class/gender they're going to play? I might do a male Argonian or a female Nord.

It's hard to decide between Female Redguard, Female Dark Elf (though this is most likely what i will go with because I did in Oblivion), and Female Argonian.

Been considering a Breton play through as well. Does anyone know if they still start of with the 50% Magic Resistance?

I'll be using either a Breton or a Wood Elf. Male for the former, female for the later.
I'm leaning towards Breton more so.

Has anyone read Lord of Souls? :)

I'll do what I normally do, play for an hour or two and get a feel for how I like each character. Start with a bosmer archer/healer, then try out an Imperial mage, then try out an Orc bodysmasher.

Thanks, Chunky!!

We are getting down there now....officially (only) 4 weeks to go until launch. My excitement level is beginning to reach maximum levels. Going here in a bit to put more money down on my preorder. Thank goodness, too, my Game Stop changed their minds and will be doing a midnight launch.

Chunky, are you still going to wait two weeks for the free shipping?

The stuff about the noob beating the
final boss is just a sad sideeffect of scaling. Honestly I prefer the
way it was in many older RPGs. If your level is not high enough, too
bad. If you can go anywhere at level 1, it ruins your sense of
achievement. I had hoped they had learned this lesson from Oblivion, but
I guess not.

But the guys that played are not noobs. They're developers that have been playing the game for years.

And it has nothing to do with level scaling anyway.

On the old Bioware boards we had a  "no exp" challenge for BG1.  And it turned out that  Serevok can, in fact,  be beaten with a level 1 mage.

Well either level scaling or bad design. I do honestly think it's bad design if you have a leveling system that you don't even need to use to beat the game, at least if you don't use exploits.

Level scaling has everything to do with this of course. If you scale all enemies to your level, you aren't going to run into anything that so severely outlevels you that you don't stand a chance. By no means does that imply that level scaling is the only thing that can make a game too easy to beat.

Fixed levels and level scaling both have their place. I think a mix of the two would be preferable. It's OK to decide that a level 1 character just CAN'T beat the final boss. But on the other hand we'd also get bored if we could outlevel everything entirely. I'm simply suggesting that not all things should be scaled down if the player's level is too low, and some enemies should only exist at higher levels. Weaker enemies should not scale with the player. A common bandit shouldn't last long against a legendary dragon slayer.

I want the final boss to break a new character in half, not be scaled down to a level 1 final boss. Besides, it's silly if you can even reach the final boss without leveling up.

My only real concern sofar with Skyrim (and its not really anything other than an insignificant gripe that truly don't really effect me) is the fact that we will be levelling uo a lot and I will only be 50 hours in and at level 40 already.

I'm doing my first ever run of Fallout 3, and while I thought it was hard early on (a tad), i levelled uo way to fast and I'm right now at soft cap max level 20 only 60 hours in, and even Deathclaws are relatively easy.

I agree, I hope some enemies are only high level enemies and will present even a challenge at late levels...these include Liches and Vampires as enemies I'd like to see do this.

Early on I want dragons to annihilate as well, or be so hard it drains an inventory for potions and enchantments very quickly.

If this is done like Fallout 3 like they said, early game trekking will be more suspenseful, but hopefully the luster of being a little scared to run across a hard high level enemy remains until we are very, very high level.

Well both Fallout 3 and New Vegas raised the level cap. In New Vegas I'm in DLC 3 out of 4 now and only at level 33. The cap is 50. It goes pretty fast early on and then it really slows down. I'm thinking it will be sort of the same thing for Skyrim. There are going to be DLCs and higher level limits. I'm almost certain of it.

I decided I couldn't wait any longer and got $1 release day shipping! Another cool thing Amazon did is give people who pre-order Skyrim a $10 gift card!

Basically my shipping has come out to -9 dollars lol.

What "Golden Galeon" Guest are you referring to in Oblivion? I don't remember this quest at all. Or is this a DLC?

Yeah, I didn't stumble upon An Unexpected Voyage with my first character either. Nor my second, nor third. I basically never slept or paid for rooms in Inns unless it was made necessary by a quest (ala the Anvil Guild's recommendation). I made it a mission after finding about the Voyage mission to sleep in every Inn at least. Heck, I had enough money by then to just burn through haha.

I couldn't agree with you more in regards to having more than enough septums to burn through. Heck I've currently got of 1.5 million Thought of just buying house because I can not that I really need them. Don't have a need for anything right now really as I've got plenty of weapons, armor, potions, etc. Found out about the Voyage mission quite by accident when I went aboard the ship out of curiosity. Usually my first play through I try to explore everything.<G>

Lol, I hear skooma addiction is becoming more and more of a problem...

Btw...I'm glad you got launch day shipping for $1, that's completely worth it by a long shot, even more so with a free $10 gift card. Pretty darn good deal.

That sounds great. In IV you can go above the level cap without dlc but I noticed in FO3 that you max XP @ level 20. I might be halfway done based on my own guess and I'm 65 hours logged sofar. It is nice having a compete character where I can recognize character evolution stopped and have a specific build for the rest of the game, but I like the concept of it really slowing down later on. Then at least we can get an establish build with skills and perks up midrange around the 40-60 hour mark.

Do dragons start appearing at a certain level or certain part of the main quest?

From what I am aware, you can be 5 minutes into the game at lvl 1 and a Dragon can appear. They are already there when the game starts.

You would be really really really unlucky for that too happen, but it is possible as they are randomly generated to a certain extent.

Im sure theres a couple of locations Dragons guard as part of the main quest too.

I'm fairly certain that in every single game we've mentioned in this discussion, the final boss CAN break a level 1 character in half.... with one hit, in fact.  Level scaling has nothing to do with it.

These kinds of challenges we're talking about (no exp runs; speed runs etc) operate on a different wavelength.  In the case of BG1, the player is making extreme use of EVERY available tactic, item,    Summon, potion, exploit and skill he's ever learned from playing the game countless times.  I'll see if I can find it on YouTube, but basically the fight is all about Kiting, stealth, spamming summons from wands,  spamming scrolls,  and using the terrain  (the traps on the ground) to your advantage.

IMO, that's not called bad design or bad level scaling.  It's called being a grandmaster  of the game you're playing.  And Kudos to any game that allows for so much freedom and sheer depth in tactical game play, that such a thing can actually be done.
