From what I am aware, you can be 5 minutes into the game at lvl 1 and a Dragon can appear.
Will Dragons ambush your level 1 character?
IGN recently interviewed Bruce Nesmith, lead designer of Skyrim, and asked whether or not unlimited number of dragons within the game might happen across a lowly adventurer without the skills or equipment necessary to face such a strong foe. Fortunately, the answer is no.
[...]
“Random dragon attacks won’t happen right away. When they first start, you will have companions with you or be able to use the environment to your advantage, and the dragon will be one of the weaker ones. As the game progresses, you fight tougher dragons and are on your own more often.”

Battlemage as a High Elf or Breton. Oblivion with High Elf+Apprentice= ULTIMATE magic caster. Combine with heavy armor and blade skills, walking tank. Weaknesses to magic are overlooked when you max out skills. Its total domination, and I love it.

We'll see how it goes. Only magic I ever used in Oblivion/Morrowind was detect life/telekinesis.

Except I use heal and paralysis.
Magic looks a lot cooler thks time around so I think I'll pick that over bows.

I'm currently playing oblivion and I use the Bow and stealth quite a bit works out great. Was thinking of going the same way in Skyrim but after seeing that you can dual wield and wiled and cast at the same time that is looking like a promsing way to play. Currently use only Restoration spells and Destruction spells.

Good, I could ONLY imagine if the Enclave came to blast me at level one in Fallout 2 (Especially) and Fallout 3. A dragon would be the same:unsure:
it would be funny though

In Daggerfall and Arena it would impossible to finish the game without magic, unless you did quests for powerful artifacts. In Morrowind/ObIivion you can easily finish without.

Breton mage, but I think magic won't be as fun without spellmaking. It'll probably be more balanced with archery and melee, when it should eclipse both.
Think of it as a challenge.

Ouch. Or going into the Deathclaw Sanctuary @ Level 1 with no stimpaks and only a BB Gun and police baton. Like I unfortunately did

I did that at about level 4 or 5. I thought I had avoided it and one minute I was talking to a Super Mutant, the next I was trying to fend off a Deathclaw with a .38 revolver. That didn't end well.

Lol it was definitely the ultimate wrong turn. Although i came upon it by accident, too. I was running for my life from a mole rat of all things and boy did I ever make a boneheaded turn. I died so swiftly, utterly and completely they should have made me start over the entire game
I got my sweet revenge though. Came back around level 17 with the dart gun, flame thrower, fully repaired combat shotgun and gattling laser among others, and a fat man. Killed the last two with the fat man to savor my complete retribution.
I hope to encounter another unfortunate scenario like this in Skyrim!

Sweetness! Thanks for the link. It's something I hadn't thought of before really, a nice little detail to add to the list. In IV I found a Key of Hidden Wealth but never used it or found out where it went to. The only treasure map I can think of in IV was The Forlorn Watchman quest when you release the ghost and get awarded with a chest hidden under water. Come to think of it, maybe that was what that key was used for. Treasure maps will bring an additional element of things to do, and I'm sure we are going to be given maps sometimes instead of just receiving an item straight up. Man, I can't wait to sit back and take my time and savor everything in this game!
I figured, too, there'd be another media push right before launch day. Hopefully not too many spoilers last second but new footage.
I'm starting a countdown. 27 MORE DAYS

No in BG1 it doesn't have to do with level scaling, and I think it's far better there than in Oblivion (although I still don't agree it should be possible to beat or reach the final boss at level 1). I don't mean to disrespect the people who do these challenge or speed runs, quite the opposite in fact.Yrkoon wrote...
I'm fairly certain that in every single game we've mentioned in this discussion, the final boss CAN break a level 1 character in half.... with one hit, in fact. Level scaling has nothing to do with it.termokanden wrote...
I want the final boss to break a new character in half, not be scaled down to a level 1 final boss. Besides, it's silly if you can even reach the final boss without leveling up.
These kinds of challenges we're talking about (no exp runs; speed runs etc) operate on a different wavelength. In the case of BG1, the player is making extreme use of EVERY available tactic, item, Summon, potion, exploit and skill he's ever learned from playing the game countless times. I'll see if I can find it on YouTube, but basically the fight is all about Kiting, stealth, spamming summons from wands, spamming scrolls, and using the terrain (the traps on the ground) to your advantage.
IMO, that's not called bad design or bad level scaling. It's called being a grandmaster of the game you're playing. And Kudos to any game that allows for so much freedom and sheer depth in tactical game play, that such a thing can actually be done.
What I'm really talking about is if you have a game that scales everything to your level, that badass super demon firebreathing boss that SHOULD tear the limbs off some green adventurer wannabe can be beaten at a low level. Not because the player is super clever, but because of the scaling. Oblivion took the scaling too far, and hopefully it will be more reasonable in Skyrim.

Amazing! The character I want to play in Skyrim is a selfish, greedy treasure hunter mage, so the treasure maps will fit him like a glove. Thanks, Yrkoon.

From the outset of the game I shall have the goal of finding whoever is now weilding Umbra and reclaiming my sword. Although I hope it looks more like the Morrowind version than Oblivion.
