And they confirmed there will be treasure maps in the game.

Sweet! Hopefully you don't have to buy a magazine to see them.

This will be my first Elder Scrolls game. Loved Fallout 3 though. Looking forward to getting lost in brilliant Bethesda atmosphere all over again.

You are in for a treat. Fallout 3 was great, but it's with the ES games that Beth really shine (in my opinion of course). This is one of those cases where the 'say goodbye to your social life' saying is actually likely to be true, ES games are made with an incredibly addictive recipe.

(and also in response to jreezy and anyone else who might have replied... haven't looked at page 210 yet, haha)

Yeah... man, I'm excited. I watched some of the previews for Skyrim and the world is just... wow. I was talking about it with Bogsnot the other day, about how we tend to go for more main narrative kinds of games like what's gotten me into this whole obsessiveness with BioWare. But I was mulling over that very uniquely beautiful impact that Fallout 3 had on me for dozens of hours and I realized that while I'm playing Skyrim I don't think I'll mind the 'disjointed' world much. Not when it's so damn big.

Exploration and atmosphere are two very, very important aspects of gaming to me but I'm also getting into more Western series later than most 24-year-olds, having been glued to the Japanese side of the coin for a long time until recently I realized that many of those great Japanese franchises I for so long adored have fallen by the wayside. Skyrim and Zelda are my two big purchases this holiday season and they'll both offer plenty, I'm positive of that much. They'll be two very similar and yet incredibly different games and I can't wait to get lost in both of them. :)

You know, the funny thing is, I speak of exploration being so pivotal but I prefer ME2. Heh, well I guess the exploration in ME1 just didn't so as much for me. Now if they threw an uncharted planet at me the size of a Bethesda map... oh my gobrino, I wouldn't be on these forums because I'd be too busy mining for palladium until the day I died.

I'm currently on the PS3 browser and can't really access twitter. Would someone mind sharing the excitement with the technologically disabled friends among us? :P

Yeah, I bought OXM UK on Friday purely for Skyrim(couple of new screenshots and from what I've read so far no major reveals) and I don't fancy buying anymore. Magazines have gotten overly expensive. Back in my day you could get two magazines and a good ogling for 20 bronze coins.

Apparently its the same alpha build previews so it will be more of the same. Better than nothing.

New video is going to be on GTTV on gametrailers.com on Thursday allegedly.

Yeah, you would be surprised how much of an impact it can have on you despite it's lack of narrative focus and polish that games such as those BioWare make have. Whilst they have developed a reputation for not having the best stories/writing in the world, it has been exaggerated somewhat and the lore is so rich for ES that it often covers up any flaws with the execution (for me at least). Not to mention there are just so many quests and plots in these games that no matter how many duff ones there are still plenty of classics.

And who knows, maybe they will deliver on their promises in regards to the Radiant Story they are putting in Skyrim, it could have a fantastic narrative this time around which would only make the deal that much sweeter.

Whilst a strong narrative is paramount for me, I do find a game with amazing atmosphere and a great sense of exploration can go some way to making up for a deficiency in that area.  Zelda was one of the first games I remember falling in love with and I've followed it ever since. Needless to say Skyward Sword is going to be one of my purchases this winter too, along with a Wii to play it haha.

It's funny, as you say Skyrim and Zelda - and BioWare RPGs come to that, are all very different to each other; however they all share the ability to make me completely lose myself in the world they create. Different styles, same result. Although other than Zelda I must admit I struggle to get into Japanese RPGs to be honest.

Time to pre-order on Steam. I don't need a disc if it's going to use Steam anyway.

Here's my plan:

4 days with Skyrim and then it's time to mess with Saints Row The Third for a bit.

Oh, from playing Fallout 3 I can tell you I never found the writing subpar or anything, anyway. If it's anything like that it will be fine. Any better and it will be great, even. There are lots of crazy things in that game. That cult that worships the undetonated nuke is an early one that sticks with me, for example. Amazing.

Bethesda has been making insinuations that the story will be better this time, too, you say? Sweet.

Oh, indeed. Zelda is masterful in its near-complete simplicity and it works very well for the series. Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma know what they're good at -- sucking the player in minimal ways and making them fall in love with the setting. :)

If you ever feel like attempting JRPGs again for whatever reason though, PM me and I'll give you a few recommendations from the old days. This is just my opinion of course but most games from that genre within the past... going on a decade now, really, pale in comparison to a few good titles from 1995 through 2001 or so. That was very much a golden age. The writing is pretty juvenile and campy now whereas while it was rarely perfect, the stories themselves once spoke volumes, tackled all kinds of relevant sociopolitical issues relatively maturely and touched my heart growing up.

I mean, that's just my opinion of course, no need to go spreading it around.

Okay, I just heard that Skyrim will have Steam. I really don't like it, but since it's not always-online I don't think it'll be a big problem. A few questions for people in the know...

How does Steam work, for someone who's never had it? Do I just have to create an account, verify the game or whatever, then play to my heart's content? or do they want me to log in every time I start the game? Help me out here.

Dissapointing to see Steam worming its way into every game I want to buy of late. Yay! Another pain in the ass client I'm forced to install! Just what I wanted.

I'm not a PC gamer, but to my understanding you have to register for Steam, verify the game once while online, and from there you can put it in offline mode without ever having to use Steam again.

Bullsh*t. Steam asks me to sign in, it asks me to create a second account for their award winning customer support. It doesn't let me play my Steam games when complications arise, such as internet connection failure. Thanks Gabe you fat douche bag. You're no better than Microsoft.

Happy to help :wizard:

You download the Steam client and run it (extremely miniscule resource useage, won't reduce performance of games even on slower computers) , where you can then login with an account you create. If you're buying the game on Steam itself, it's quite straight forward... download & install, then play.

If it's a retail copy you just register the provide code in the box with steam (in the client) to assign that copy of the game to your own steam account.

Once the game is installed, you will need to start up steam any time you want to play, and leave it running in the background.

However, you don't need to be connected to the internet to play if you activate OFFLINE mode in steam. Once you've activated offline mode, you can start Steam up without a net connection and also play without needing to be connected to the net. Once you re-engage Online mode in steam though (to patch, or whatever), you'll need to re-enable OFFLINE mode afterwards or Steam will constantly try to connect the internet everytime you play the game.

Hope that helped somewhat. I find steam very user friendly and not intrusively at all to use.

:)

Try enabling Offline mode. You will no longer encounter those problems again.
