Skyrim is a console port, in the sense that it was developed first for console and then ported to PC, but so are the majority of multi-platform games released these days.

Just because it runs at 30 fps on an Xbox at 1280x720 with low res textures, no AA and no AF doesn't mean it will run at 30fps on a crappy PC at 1920x1080 resolution with graphics settings maxed.

However, I'm a bit concerned that a DX9 card was listed in the recommended specs. Previously, we were informed that Skyrim will make use of DX11 optimization features.

Specs for Fallout New Vegas (on the official website there is only "recommended," not "minimum" and "recommended":

6GB of HDD space sounds small. Texture pack coming?

Battlefield 3 is coming with a Tex pack on consoles. Can someone tell me what a texture pack is, in this case?

the fan created texture mods for Oblivion result in a big hit on frame rate.

I'm hoping for an official texture pack along the lines of the one Bioware released for DA2. I had almost no reduction in frame rate.

Interesting new Game Informer interview with some new footage

Cool shot of freezing an enemy with Ice Form Shout and you can see his body float down a river:

It's so hard to find good help these days....

It does.  And I have a question about that.

How come Skyrim requires more HDD space than it recommends?

That makes no sense.

There's speculation that its due to extra space required for the swap file given less RAM in the required specs.

Anyway, I was never worried about my rig being able to run the game. But it's nice to get official confirmation that my system surpasses the recommended specs by at least an entire generation.

I've finally got my head around the levelling in Skyrim. Here's a good thread on the Bethesda forums about it:

http://forums.bethso...45784-leveling/

It sounds like it will really encourage specialisation.

Oblivion's optimization is bad regardless of graphic settings or texture mods.  The Witcher 2 runs better than Oblivion on my PC. :D

Neat.

But...   from the link:

Onward to Whiterun With no shortcuts in evidence, I had no choice but to hot-foot it down the valley to the next, rather larger settlement, the suspiciously Rohan-ish tiered township of Whiterun. Here lies the ancestral seat of the Companions, shield-brothers and shield-sisters who fight for coin, I was informed by a gaggle of NPCs after they'd finished lecturing me because I hadn't helped them slay some stupid Giant.

I only hissed in reply, and would have axed the pack of them there and then, but a nearby guard had received word of Riverwood's devastation and landed a pre-emptive strike.

^weren't we told this wouldn't happen?  That guards in the next town wouldn't have ESP?

See I'm worried, because I have a radeon 5450. I just got Oblivion for PC (discovered TES on Xbox by pure chance, do all my real gaming on PC, so just got it) and I can't put the graphics up too too high or it gets slow on me. They SAY Radeon 4890+, but what is it really (for recommended settings)?

Who knows.    I know that as far as AMD/ATI goes    the 5000+ series is  the start of their DX11 cards.  But does Skyrim even make use of DX11 features?

You should be  good with a 5450.

As ErichHartmann said, Oblivion is pretty bad optmized. Even with a amazing PC the game still suffered a frame rate drops simply because it felt like it, sometimes. We can only hope the same won't happen with Skyrim.

HD 4890 >>> HD 5450

HD 5450 is a low-mid end card.

HD 4890, although it uses the older chipset, is still a middle-high end card.

Well! That seems like it might not be the whole truth :police:

Would you play the PC version with an xbox controller?

Or simply don't play on the high or ultra settings. Skyrim will run fine on average settings with a 5450.
