I'm not sure what will happen during that week Skyrim is released, but if I ever will need to hold it off for studies, I will suck it up and get it done. It will be tough. Also, Arena wasn't highly anticipated but what about Daggerfall? I heard Arena had a strong following in some time after its release.Yrkoon wrote...
I've chatted with a couple of people who are in the same position as you. That is to say, despite the agonizing and self-imposed wait, they're holding off on the game until other, "more important" obligations in their life are completed.Nameless one7 wrote...
Anyhow, back on topic of skyrim, I'm not playing skyrim until the semester is over with because I know I'll flunk my classes if I play it before that. Anyone else holding off on skyrim?
And honestly, I have real respect for people like that. I have no idea if I'd be strong enough to do the same were I in their shoes. I had no such dilemmas back when I was in college, as Arena wasn't nearly as hyped or anticipated back then as Skyrim is today.
Skyrim releases on the day my college quater ends--with a week of finals following. It'll be haaaaaaaarrrd.

One of those journalists who got to play the game for 3 hours reported that he found a word to a shout in some tome buried in some dungeon, but lamented that he couldn't use it because he hadn't killed any dragons yet.

There's a 2 step process before you can use a shout. First you have to learn the word(s) to it, then you have to absorb a dragon's soul.
.
I guess you can do it in either order, if you absorb a soul first once you find a word you can learn a shout from the soul you absorbed before.

From what I have seen in videos, the dragon souls work as a point system. You use them to level up the shouts you have available. There are a number of shouts, can't remember the exact number, and each has three levels. You use one soul to "activate" the shout you know and then you can level up that shout twice to increase its effect.

old Ultima competitor is still around ,remember playing Arena with DOS OS on my 486@33 mgh rig (lol) way back in 1993. Almost 20 years later we talk bout TES again
I vividly remember going to CompUSA and and reading the system requirements on the box for Arena before buying ti.
Requires 25 megs Hard Drive space. That blew me away. It was Gargantuan for the time. And a true sign that the game was something else... something massive. 25 megs! that was like 1/5th of my entire hard drive.
I also remember the patching process. If you could even call it a process. You had to call an 800 number, talk to a tech, give them your address, then wait a week for them to mail you the patch on floppy disk. lol

Can see no reason why that wouldn't be possible. It was possible in previous ES games afterall.

By the way, I'm just going to take a guess and say that if you muck up your skills or whatever, there's no way to respec yourself?
Yes, I believe this was confirmed by Pete Hines if I'm not mistaken. No respec potions.
Also, no way to alter your character's appearance after the creation menu.

That's 100% doable and Bethesda has focused on giving you that opportunity, one of the sweet advantages of a classless system. You are what you want to be, in this astronomically huge and detailed world stuffed with cities, towns, nature, lakes, quests, factions...and hundreds of unique dungeons. And you have 10 races to chose from.
You will be able to focus on improving everything you mentioned very specifically and deliberately. Perks are designed to give it flavor to go along with new abilities and statistical increases. It's a fascinating combo you're thinking about. As you go along you'll fine tune how you want to play and realize other skills that are important on a smaller scale.
For my build, I'm focusing purely in all Five Schools of magicka along with a little physical strength and Security. Security is the Skill that directly governs their lockpicking system. There is lots of good loot to be found, along with raw components and elements for individual crafting. Destruction is fun (of course), I personally am excited to duel wield flames.
