I'm going Imperial simply because this is my first TES and I've heard they are great for starting out with.

I'll learn more about the others as I play the game and might give them a chance.

Actually, I think races won't matter that much in Skyrim, now that the attributes are gone. Of course, the more-money thingie will be handy for begginers, I think.

NPCs of your race will have diffrent dialog towards you, and vise versa.

I meant in a "it's more easy to begin with race X" type of thing. I know your race changes dialogues.

It's possible your skills might be higher or lower for certain races. I can't see why say Nord,Redguard and Orc warrior skills are higher then say a Altmer who should have high base magic school skills.

Can I make my Redguards white?

I thought Redguards were basically...black.

Also, if races don't have ther own unique abilities that's bullsh*t. Redguards are natural athletes, Bretons are magic oriented, Nords are the strongest, etc.

Indeed and they are. There was a post by a user on the Beth forums who played the game at Eurogamer, many of the typical skill changes are still present for the various races (Bosmer get a sneak and archery bonus etc.) can't remember specifics though and it wasn't a comprehensive list. Racial powers also return, such as the Khajiit night eye ability.

In other words there is still plenty of reason to think about which race you play as beyond cosmetic reasons!

Also Argonians should still be able to breath underwater.

They do have their  unique abilities in Skyrim.   I think  Someone posted the  list about 20 pages back or so.  Nords have   Battle Cry;  Orcs have Berserker rages;  Argonians can breath underwater;  Khajiits can see in the dark and use claw attacks....   minor stuff like that.

Edit:  Found the list

- ORCS: Beserker
- REDGUARDS: Adrenaline Rush
- WOOD ELF: Resist poison, resisit disease, command animals
- NORD: Battlecry
- KHAJIIT: Night-eye, claw attacks
- IMPERIAL: Voice of the Emperor, find more coins when looting
- HIGH ELF: Regenerate Magicka more quickly
- DARK ELF: Ancestor’s Wrath (surround self in fire), resist fire
- BRETON: Dragonskin (absorb spells), resist shock
- ARGONIANS: Histskin (regenerate health quickly), resist disease, breathe underwater

Confirmed. :) They also get 'Hist Kin' (a reference to the tree things in Blackmarsh I believe) which is a health regen ability IIRC.

There just isn't any reason for them to change the way the racial bonuses work, it fits the lore and helps make new playthroughs feel more unique. The skills element was always just as important as any effect on the attributes anyway.

Who told you that? There's not much difference between the races even when starting out.

You're just as likely to do well with a class who's look you like the best and has the abilities you like the most.

You could in Fable and it sounds like Bethesda took the marriage cues and stuff from Fable, could be wrong and it just that Fable's the only game I've played with a system that's close to what I've heard about the system in Skyrim.
Though I hope multiple spouses aren't as quick to leave you as they are in Fable and that you don't have to spend 90% of time with them to keep them happy so they won't leave.  There was no way to stick with how I play games and still keep a spouse for more than a couple story missions.

In fable 2 and 3 they claim you could have a spouse in one place and another in another place and neither would leave you.  But like the guards in Oblivion, they seemed to be omniscient and whenever you did have more than one, it didn't take long at all for one or both to leave you because you decided to get married multiple times.

I would love to start my own lesbian vampire cult, it actually was something I thought about for Oblivion.  I even went to see what the whole vampire thing was about, it sucked.  Health just went down way too fast during the day and night didn't last long enough and of course, was hard to do anything because all the merchants and whatnot slept during the night.

I hope they added some night merchants and people at the very least and make night last longer, otherwise I fail to see why anyone would want to contract vampirism.  Hell, the Vampirism ability sucked too, it didn't absorb that much health.

Being a vampire was difficult sometimes, but selling items I didn't have a problem with. Since I had max friendship and was part of the thieves guild, I just sold to Ongar the Weary all the time. (The thieves merchant in Bruma) He's always free at night in the bar.

The only thing that sucked was sunlight took WAY too much damage. If there was a way to bypass the sunlight, like full body armor (Daedric) or a spell for protection would have been a lot easier. I hated walking everywhere because I didn't want to fast travel and be stuck in the sunlight.

I see what you mean, but if anything the differences are more pronounced early on than they are later. Plus if you want to play a magic based character and you have never played an ES game before, starting as a magicka focused race can be a big help.

In the end any race can excell at any discipline, but some undoutably give you a boost to that style of gameplay or can have their benefits used to shore up weaknessess in a build. Beginners wouldn't necessarily know about this sort of thing, or how the classes behave in the lore even, so starting as an Imperial (a race which is quite easy to get a handle on and is easy to take in any gameplay direction) makes sense.

Obviously the most risqué thing they could do is have a romance between an Imperial and another Imperial.

Obviously.

Indeed.   Apparently this NPC was a early version of a Redguard. Their skintone has since darkened
