It wasn't a server thing like you had, the game would literally install from disc just fine until near the end... then it would download about a gig of data it just convieniently can't get from the disc. It wasn't a patch, (speaking of which I hate steams auto updates, wish it would ask instead of jumping to it, I have to individually select each game in a hidden menu and choose not to update, and even then I can't download the update on an individual basis outside of steam) it was just a huge chunk of the game that apparently wasn't on the disc, for both civilization and shogun 2. If worse comes to worse, I will buy the game legally, then acquire the game by a different means so I don't have to deal with the hassle.
Steam is just absolutely full of annoying quirks like that, among the worse being that incredibly terrible and useless backup feature.
Don't get me wrong, I love steam when it gets it right, but not all of steam's changes to the industry are good. I fear the day everything goes completely digital. So many things can go wrong.
At the very least they could keep disc games, you know... on the disc.
Something very different then, it sounds more like the sort of thing that devs do in a feeble attempt to stop piracy.
I don't think Bethesda will do that, well they didn't with the last game I bought from them anyway. Admitedly it was Fallout New Vegas and that was 12 months ago, so they might have changed their policy since then but I still have hope that they won't try to shaft us that way. And now I'm rambling, sorry.
