Well, no. It's just idle speculation.
I'm hoping you're right and they adopt a Morrowind type factional system with skill checks, exclusive quests between factions and elements of New Vegas reputation system and depth
It's just that Bethesda have taken to the ethos that the player should be able to experience as much of the game as possible in a single playthrough, even if it's not right for the character.
Really, it's just me being negative as opposed to anything concrete.
Sorry about that.

No worries, I'm hoping for a lot more depth with the factions as well. Considering the game is set against the backdrop of a civil war, I'm expecting more conflict between various groups. At a minimum, I expect there will have to be a war going one between the Rebel faction and a Loyalist faction.
Also, I believe in one of the recent German TV interviews, Todd mentioned that there will be a racist Nord faction that the PC encounters, possibly oppressing a group of elves. It seemed to suggest that the PC at least in this particular encounter will have to choose which side to support.
And I agree with your point about Oblivion being too non-committal about guilds and factions. The Fighter's Guild was the least interesting of all of them, as it was essentially a generic employment office. I don't necessarily have a problem with someone skilled with swordplay later studying magic and becoming the Arch-mage, but if you join a guild or faction that is in the middle of a blood feud, you should be able to roleplay that and take a side.
If the motto is "Be who you want, do what you want." or whatever it is that Todd said at one point, IMO that doesn't necessarily mean "Be everything and do absolutely everything at the same time."
I hope there is some freedom to develop a character who fully commits to one faction or another, which could mean helping them to completely wipe out an enemy faction. Obviously it would be ridiculous if you could still go back and join the faction you just decimated.
