Yeah, I kept hearing so much from all the mages how awful and horrible Necromancy was and it just made me want to side with the Necromancers. Also I found it kind of funny that for all the badmouthing of Necromancy, there was no shortage of mages willing to teach me how to summon zombies for 200 septims.

I guess the Skyrim magic system is undergoing some huge changes, and there were some missed opportunities with Necromancy stuff in previous games. Already it seems like there will be some cool spells involving glyphs cast on the ground, powerful Bioshock-like telekinesis and many ways to combine spells.

We might even see some truly epic quests involving researching conjuration and necromancy.

All the Necromancer NPCs we encountered in Oblivion, for example, had basically the same arsenal of spells as most of the other spellcasting NPCs, there could have been a deeper, much more interesting culture for this faction. 

There is also potential for much more interesting Necromancy spells, faction NPCs and quests involving Necromancy. I really liked the lore and the history behind the concept of "Blood Magic" in DAO, for example (although it was lame that you could use blood magic everywhere and yet no NPC ever gives you a second look).

Historically, in ancient times, Necromancy was a sort of divination involving corpses or summoning the spirits of the dead in order to seek guidance. Yes, definitely.

Things that are outlawed, rare or banned in the game's lore should be restricted from the player.

You could have Spell Tomes in long dungeons to teach you "forbidden spells" with in-game books, maps and quests guiding you in the right direction. Perhaps there is a series of books detailing the hidden aspects of Necromancy and your quest is to find all the books and discover the hidden knowledge.

They could also have a mechanic where casting certain forbidden spells made everyone hostile. Was already in Oblivion, not hard to implement.

I always wondered why a mage would never react to me in q harsh way if I was wearing a Necromancer robe. The Necromancer robe was corny, too, but I truly believe attention is now being given to every detail.

hopefully it will be like faction clothes in new vagas, i hated how i could walk round in dark botherhood armour and guards just go "greetings champion"

I kind of really like the colour palette they use in skyrim, oblivions landscapes were beautiful when it cam out, but with a lot less character.

It allows you a huge amount of freedom to do whatever you want in an exciting, engaging world. The storyline in these games can be a bit dull, but the gameplay is nearly unbeatable in my opinion. They've spent 5 years creating this game that has great graphics and artistic style, huge amounts of activities that can be engaged in ( from fighting dragons to brewing potions, to more mundane things like chopping wood), an interactive world where NPC's have their own lives and a unique personality, extensive lore and in-game books that are well written, tons of character customization (including race, gender, body type, scars, hair), interesting factions that can be joined (like an assassin's guild called the Dark Brotherhood), about 85 different spells, houses you can buy and live in, a very large game world that can be fully explored, a revamped crime system (details are scarce at the moment),  dynamic story lines that change based upon your actions (it's a new feature called Radiant Story).

Oh, and DRAGONS! :wub:

The Elder Scrolls is a fantasy rpg that takes place in a massive, fully explorable sandbox environment (16-20 square miles) and is littered with fully fleshed out cities, woods, mountains...various environment types...and hundreds of fully fleshed out and massive dungeons, mines, caves and forts that are fully explorable (some related to quests/side quests) and stuffed with loot. You make a character than upgrade your character by levelling, looting armor and weapons (huge variety you can wear and switch in inventory, or store in one of your houses if over encumbered, so you choose what you want in your inventory at any given point and store the rest away). There are dozens upon dozens of normal side quests, a main storyline, factions and guilds to join, secrets and special weapons and rings of power and amulets and ingredients to alchemy growing wildly or looted off of beasts. Potions, poisons, spells...85 spells in Skyrim, including Telekenisis, Shocking Touch...Magicka is broken into categories (such as alteration, destruction, conjuration, restoration, etc. etc. with magicka listed sub-categorically under these "schools".

Any piece of armor or weapon or ring or amulet or robe or clothing can be individually enchanted with a specific power if desired...statistics on everything.

Npcs and creatures have their own schedule and behavior. You live and breathe in the game world, and you can pretty much do what you want, when you want. It'll take away hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours away if you want to do it all.

That's really the only difference Elder Scrolls is a sandbox game and because of that you can't expect a story on par with Bioware games...well usually or characters. But yea you can spend thousands of hours in Elder Scrolls the games are worth it alone just for the mods.

Agreed about the mods. Now that we have those little extras like finishing blows, improved animations and gameplay I simply can't wait. Eagerly anticipating what will those modders pull off this time. (Deadly Reflex 2 anyone?):devil:

In my case, I've been playing Oblivion for a few years and so far I haven't found any substitute for my Oblivion fix. I've certainly tried quite a few other RPGs, but I found Oblivion and Morrowind to have some kind of intangible unique quality that makes the huge sandbox game world both believable and a cool place to hang out and explore.

Each playthrough lasts hundreds of hours - thousands for some people. My most recent playthrough started about six months ago with a heavily modded version of Oblivion is now approaching 350 hours in and I haven't touched the main quest yet or even entered any Oblivion gates.

There are certainly a lot of flaws with the game, some of which can be corrected with mods. For my current game I have installed 150+ mods including
  • hi res 2048x2048 textures
  • enhanced economy mods that make merchant prices more expensive
  • survival mods that require eating, drinking, sleeping to stay alive,
  • mods that make the NPCs look less ugly
  • complete overhaul mods like OOO/MMM/Frans/FCOM/Duke Patricks, which make every combat encounter really challenging.

Deadly Reflex, Thieves Aresenal and Darnified UI are all a must for me and really made me like Oblivon o a lot more.

I agree with you. The story and characterization is absolutely nowhere near BioWare level. The story in Oblivion is serviceable...nothing spectacular but still interesting enough to care about it, at least for me.

I think Bethesda takes a less narrative approach because you are the author of the story. What you do, where you go, what you collect...you are the author.

There is definitely much room for improvement. I expect writing to be much, much better in Skyrim. We'll all see for ourselves, but given the amount of detail that is being given in every other aspect, I cannot imagine Bethesda not giving much more focus to story and writing. The gameplay trailer had some pretty decent writing. They will never, ever be BioWare, but massive improvements would be welcome.

I play Oblivion with zero mods, and i will play Skyrim with zero mods. Oblivion is an awesome game that can't stand on its own without being criticized for this or that. I look past that and just savor the fun, cause its a good game.

DB armor was the best though!  :wizard:  I wanted it in Origins.

Lol. I know I'm a weirdo. Heard a lot of the mods are pretty cool and make the game better.

One mod I might get for Skyrim would be to ride a dragon (Dragon Steed?) as you would a horse as a means of transportation. Maybe Bethesda will have that though, but I doubt it.

Same here. I really regret that I let my sister borrow my copy of Oblivion just before the news about Skyrim made me want to play it again. :pinched:

I will buy Skyrim for ps3 so no mods here. That's probably for the best since the mods for Oblivion opened my eyes for all the flaws in that game. Nowadays i must mod it beyond recognition to be able to enjoy it. I may be the only one who think that fact is a bit sad :(

Heh, already have my character in mind. Going for a Dunmer dual wielding "Assassin" that dabbles with illusion magic and alchemy. Hopefully there is some dark light armor to go for the look :ph34r:.
