I'm either going to have to finish TW2 or stop reading this thread <_<

I tried going back, but these days the low-light dungeons and shifting landscape give me migraines.

I didn't play with any mods running, either.

I'm foregoing other videogames so I have the pennies to build a new box and buy Skyrim. Can't wait to sink a few hundred hours into an Elder Scrolls game again. It's been too long since I had FREEDOM inside an rpg.

Once you play the game with certain mods installed, you will never be able to go back to vanilla Oblivion.

I'm usually pretty competent at managing mods, but I find adding and managing mods for Oblivion, FO3, or any game running on that engine to be rather difficult. So many different compatibility issues.

Definitely a PITA, but worth it IMO.

6 months ago I had no clue about installing mods but I did a bit of research, made a list of all the mods (over 150) I wanted to run, posted the install order steps I thought I needed to take on the Oblivion modding forum and got some great advice and feedback to correct my installation plan.

Then I installed everything according to the steps in the plan, and I had one problem - all the eyes became googly, which I had to fix by rebuilding the bashed patch in Wrye Bash.

So it took a few hours, but I had a completely different game. Very worth it IMO.

The only thing I fear about Skyrim is that the Vanilla game will be.. well... vanilla :P

I hate waiting 6 months for the big mods to start rolling out.

I was fooled by Oblivion hype prior to release but I am genuinely excited for Skyrim. The artistic design and landscape colors are a million times better than Oblivion. Now I hope they can avoid most of the problems that plague Oblivion which no amount of modding can ever fix. ;)

My final grade for Oblivion was 9/10. This was excluding the Shivering Isles dlc and mods.

I never gave any game a 10/10...almost did with Red Dead Redemption but not quite. Skyrim could be the one that does it.

I'be told myself in no way am I going to fast travel at all in Skyrim. I'm going on horse or foot absolutely everywhere, which will slow down my dungeon loot farming a considerable amount.

I want Skyrim to come out now.

I remember playing Oblivion, my first "rpg". Liked it for the most part then again the main quest story and over the top voice acting done by the same 10 people was a bit of a turn off. This is my concern for Bethesda games, the scripts and main stories are like something from a mediocre tv show and very linear.
Yes I can run around, but to what end. If they can up their game regarding this it might be something special, otherwise it will make for an entertaining sand box as they do try and put some detail in their games, but nothing that really sticks with me like ME series, DAO or Witcher 2.
Having said this I still play Oblivion with around 30 gigs worth of mods, it's a very different game and to Bethesdas credit they sure know how to make a fairly user friendly construction kit.

Same here - I have a lot of fun just wandering around, collecting side quests, and gradually unlocking all the locations on the map.

If I have to go from, for example Bruma to Anvil in Oblivion, by walking there I uncover lots of new locations and enjoy the journey, especially with survival mods installed like Real Hunger, Real Thirst, Real Sleep Extended.

I wonder if there are any portals or what not that we can use, ala Oblivion gates, in this game. In the picture where it shows the frost troll roaring while being attacked by a fire spell, behind a little ways it looks like there is an Oblivion gate.

I don't want Oblivion in this game, although I expect Alduin the Dragon god is from Oblivion or a similar dimensional plain.

  • I know Oblivion's main quest suck, but closing the Oblivion gates forever is the point of the Main Quest. In other words, don't expect bright burning portals everywhere. Expect something like a giant head in a lake.
  • Oblivion will always have a place in the Elder Scrolls. To those unfamiliar with TES lore, the night sky is Oblivion.
  • Alduin will not be from Oblivion. He's the freakin' time god. The Imperials call him Akatosh.

Todd mentioned in his interview with German TV show Gameswelt that some of the most interesting quests will take place in the planes of Oblivion.

The Oblivion areas visited during the game "Oblivion" with all the lava etc., were only one part of Oblivion, Mehrunes Dagon's Deadlands.

there are a lot more planes of Oblivion - hopefully the Oblivion levels incorporated in Skyrim will be more interesting

BTW here is a billboard that just went up in LA close to where the E3 will be held

I suspect Skyrim to be way better than both Morrowind and Oblivion, but still not a perfect 10. Bethesda games tend to have mediocre scripts for the NPC's, so I wouldn't realistically expect Skyrim to be much better. I think it will be about a 9.5 - 9.9, but the script will more likely than not hold it back some.

Is there a mod that increases the light in dungeons? That's my main problem with Oblivion these days- the lowlight caves are murder on migraines.  And the purple light for those spells, that's even worse.

There are many torches available. There are also some enchanted items, spells and the like that have night vision, that gives everything clarity, but its tinted blue.

I recommend Fin Gleam, a glass helmet that has night vision, water breathing and I believe detect life as constant effects.

There were some mods I think that also gave more color.

So I guess it maybe was an Oblivion gate. Thanks for the info, I didn't know that Oblivion was back. I'm not as steeped in lore with The Elder Scrolls as I am with The Lord of the Rings...I need to brush up a little. I would have liked the Oblivion realm and Mehrunes Dagon's Deadlands a lot more if there was more diversity in the layouts. It was cool getting to grind for sigil stones and loot, though. I wonder what the new realm will look like now.

Thanks for the link and the pic, looks like an epic billboard and reminded me just how close E3 is.

Personally I found the dungeons to be way too bright with the default settings, making torches and spells completely unnecessary. maybe I had my Brightness set higher than yours?

Not sure what kind of monitor you're using, but apparently there is a problem with older monitors needing a tweak to allow increasing the gamma beyond the maximum Brightness setting on the slider

You have to open the Oblivion.ini file in a text editor to do this.

Brightness: This gamma slider controls how bright or dark the overall screen image will be. Adjust it so that at night the image is visible but not washed out. It has no impact on performance, so set to suit your taste. If you need to increase gamma to be much brighter than the maximum on the slider allows (e.g. on very old monitors), see the fGammaMaxcommand.

The below settings are useful particularly for those with older monitors - you can alter the limits on the gamma (Brightness slider), and hence allow further adjustment of the
brightness slider to suit your monitor.
FGammaMax=0.6000
FGammaMin=1.4000

Also, Supreme Magicka and Less Annoying Magic Experience greatly improve the appearance of spell animations.

You're wrong. It wasn't. There aren't any. Oblivion doesn't have to be accessed through an Oblivion gate.  You don't need to be steeped into lore to know that fact. It's just playing the Main Quest or playing the Shivering Isles.

I might be wrong. Just saying that in the background behind the picture with the frost troll receiving a fire spell it looks sort of like an Oblivion gate.

I never played the Shivering Isles dlc, I'm gonna get it off Steam around October or so to lead into Skyrim

I would get the Shivering Isles ASAP. It is soooooo awesome.

SPOILERS

You have to kill a mega-strong giant called the Gatekeeper in the beginning to fully enter the Isles, and later you must rebuild him with body parts of your choosing, which affects his abilities.

The NPC's are hilarious and goofy, often doing zany things like running in circles in their underwear or trying to build flying boats. Mental illnesses have never been more funny!

The Daedric Lord, Sheogorath is pretty cool. He is the only NPC with a beard (probably because attempting to grow a beard is literally a crime punishable by the death penalty).

The landscape and dungeons are beautiful and are full of surprises, like a false floor that plummets a thousand feet down or secret areas with unique loot.

New spells like freezing time (sort of) and temporarily bringing back the dead. Lifeward spells that will protect you if you are an inch away from death.

Taking sides between the demented and the maniacs, including directing a small army (10 or so soldiers) to take out the other forces.

Thanks for the info on the Shivering Isles!!

It sounds like I might have to get it now to be able to do everything by November!
I just wanna know, if you can fill me in...

-How big is the map?
-How many missions/side missions are there?
-How many dungeons are there? Are they as large as in Cyrodiil?
-Is gameplay and interface the same?
-How many hours of gameplay is there?

I did hear you access it from an island way out in the middle of Niben Bay.

Actually I didn't notice it when I was first playing, only lately when I tried to pick it up again, and we have a flat panel which is newer than the game for sure.  I'm just sensitive to eye strain and light/dark contrast.  I had to quit Bioshock for the same reason.  Oblivion has the shifting landscape and then a cave or two was just murder.  I just want something that will make the dungeons a little lighter all around- torches ruin sneak and I hate that blue stuff.  I normally would use Detect Life equipment and otherwise not use anything at all.

Oh, and Shivering Isles is awesome!!!

Origins is the only game which has inspired a crazy level of fandom in me, but I played so many hours upon hours of Oblivion and the Fallout games.  Even if they don't grab your gut, they're just mesmerizing somehow.  And terrible time wasters.
