*eyeroll* You really need to try harder than that. Consolization of the menus/interface. DA2 had no particular issues on the PC interface. Worked largely the same as DAO's function-wise.

Anyway, I don't have much of a problem with it. For those who don't know, you can link  weapons/spells to your hotkeys by simply bringing up the favourites menu (Q) and pressing any number. Press the same number twice if you want to 'dual-wield' a spell (while in combat).

Crashes happen but loading times are a breeze so I don't mind much.

Lawl.

I hate the UI I have so much trouble just using a spell in both hands it becomes a frustrating process of equipping a a weapon in both hands replacing them one by one with a spell...though maybe I could be doing it wrong but with a controller all I have to do is press L or R trigger.

If you link your spells to hotkeys you don't have to do that. Just press a hotkey twice (while playing).

i.e. you have flames in both hands and press 2 twice for sparks in both.

Any tips for getting more cinematic finishing moves?

I've playing about 40 hours or so, about 60% of the time I'm using dual wield melee to attack and so far I've only had two or three cinematic kills.

I really like the UI as a dedicated PC player. It's simple and doesn't interrupt the flow of combat. /shrugs

The UI is okay, aside from the HUGE fonts. Daggerfall used the same system for picking spells.

If we're talking about the same slow-mo thing, I seem to get one whenever I do the last kill of any fight in melee.

except the part where my companions' costume slots are greyed out, I guess. My biggest complaint with DA 2's UI.

Anyway, it just seems... unexpected coming from a big DA 2 fan. :?

You're kidding right?

I'm getting them almost every other encounter.  Of course, the 2h perk tree actually has a Perk that increases the chances for decapitations, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I think marrying an Argonian is squick enough. :P

That has about zero to do with usability. That would be like complaining that you can no longer wear pants in Skyrim. Its a design decision that has nothing to do with the user interface.

I've never spoken for or against the interface in DA2, so a rather silly dig to make anyways.

I found this follower's list on the ES wiki that's a more complete list than some of the others I've seen.

I thought this was interesting: "Companions can only be killed by the player's attacks, or powerful attacks while yeilding."

Oh noes, poor Lydia. I accidentally offed her in one quest, but didn't realize she'd died by my hand. Thankfully, I had just saved right before that area, and was able to load. My character is a mage, so apparently I need to watch the friendly fire.

^on a side note, I *DO* find it hilarious that we now have an Elder Scrolls game (traditionally seen as a first person RPG), that has a 3rd person camera that zooms out further than DA2's.

I mean what's next? Deeper companions? Better storyline?

Bottom line for me is: it's obviously a Bethesda game both in terms of qualities (mainly concerning the game world and the amount of freedom) and flaws (forgettable writing/characters), but it has clearly been done with care, it has improved several of its predecessors'mistakes (ex. changed that abominable level scaling, has a decent atmosphere) it's huge and it passes the time, so it deserves to sell well.

So Borgahk is eligible for marriage, eh? She's currently my companion and not too shabby in combat. We shall see.

Man I found this piece or armor "scaled bracers for eminent smithing" I upgraded those and now everything I upgrade is either "flawless" or "exquisite", and the stats jump a lot.

I also found this blacksmith outfit. Doesn't add any stats, but it just helps with playing the blacksmith role.

I was being... sarcastic. Of course I'm referring to the gameplay itself, which is far worse than what most things can be done to a UI, unless your name is Peter Molyneux.

So far the game seems kind of forgiving on the Friendly Fire front. Lydia is always getting in the way of my dual wielding and the worst I've done is scratch her a little.

You may not have killed her though. Someone could have hit her after she yielded. I'm loving the horse Frost though. He tanked a dragon for me after I stole him for a quest so I had to keep him. He's tough.

In my view, the quality of UI design for a game has more to do with how convenient and fun it is to use, rather than the degree of similarity or difference with the console version UI. Sometimes bad UI on a PC version of a game can be similar to a console version, but it is not necessarily going to be bad just because it is similar.

I enjoyed DA2 quite a bit, despite a some gripes I had about the inventory system and the way that side quests were handled. I helped to beta test the first patch and probably logged around 200 hours on the game in total.

However, IMO, the UI for the PC version of Skyrim is slightly more convenient and more fun to use than the UI for the PC version of DA2. And a lot more convenient and enjoyable than the UI for Witcher 2, which was a PC exclusive.

I certainly did not find it enjoyable to simply scroll through all the perk tree constellations for hours for either of those games, the way I'm doing with Skyrim's UI.

DA2's incorporation of quick use icons into the HUD was very convenient, however, it reduced the screen real estate a bit. I find Skyrim's hotkey implementation needs some fixes, but I can see the benefit of this very minimal, unintrusive HUD. Ultimately you need more on the HUD in DA2 because it is a party-based game with a few more parallels with turn-based games.

The only UI drawbacks I've noticed seem to be some small glitches that will likely be fixed with the next patch:

(1) remapping key bindings does not work properly for a couple of menu functions like dropping items, taking books, etc.

(2) when you press down from the skills menu or up from the map, it should take you back to the Magic/Map/Skills/Items page.

(3) hotkeys and favorites don't work properly for dual wield melee weapons, particularly when they are 2 of the same kind.

I don't think that's correct.  I lost my first companion  (sven)  because he fell off a  really high cliff and splatted himself.  I was even able to walk down the mountain and collect his inventory.

My Lydia  was perma-killed   (finishing move and all) by a giant.  Had to reload that one.

Ha!  I'm glad I'm not the only one who   suffers from "oops!  i keep Hitting you on accident" syndrom.  I swear, I think I hit my companions more than the enemies do.

Many thanks. Found a great mod over at Skyrim nexus. It attempts to fix/tweak the UI for PC users.

Something as simple as using your mouse key to exit a menu so basic had to be added in.

Holy crap, that's why she was dying so much last night.  I was trying to level Destruction.  Image IPB

The byword in this game is save early, save often.

On second thought, I don't think that can be right- she got pretty close to death from falling rocks, too.  Oh, and traps.  Traps and followers do not mix well.

Poor Frost. I saw a horrible ending for him, in the form of a squad of bandits. I didn't get to him in time. Waaa.... I did a re-load and avoided the area entirely. I stupidly let the guy have him, though; I should have kept him.

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I'm very much like a dog in the "squirrel!" regard when it comes to reading. I think one of those awful DA2 elves killed her while she was kneeling. Image IPB

All Bethesda games have similar qualities. I don't see all of them as flaws, but more of as a design decision to not focus on a narrative-intensive story. World-building always came first, in stark contrast to BioWare games (which imo suffer from a lack of exploration factor, at least the more recent ones)

Thank god for that yeilding thing btw.  If not for that Lydia would be rotting in my last dungeon.  As it is she did die a few times (tough place the dwarven ruins under Harkarth) but I couldn't abide that so reload.
