I just took quick look to Wikipedia and it looks like Dwarfs in TES universe are at least 30k old.

Protheans in Mass Effect universe are at least 50k years old.

Dwarfs have been gone for 3000 years old in Nirn's timeline.

I just noticed that.

I derped pretty hard.

I though century was 1000 years then. :-/

Roman Empire didn't fall over night and we know how it fall.

Because the Roman Empire is the only mysterious civilization in the world that disappeared.

First of all, Roman Empire ain't even mysterious.
We know quite a huge deal about them.

Second of all, could you tell me how some huge civilization ended?

Ancient Egypt?
Romans did it.

Ancient Greece?
Romans again. Turks later on too if you count Byzantium as them.

Mayans?
Spain did quite a good job for that.

Please name one that went mysteriously.

There is no backstory for your PC, unless you feel like writing something yourself, just like in NWN and all other Elder Scrolls games. But seriously, the New Vegas PC wasn't really a character either. All you could do is make some random comments about your past which had no effect on the game and were never mentioned again. Your backstory will be as meaningless in Skyrim as it was there.

Perhaps, but I still enjoyed those small meaningless dialogs^_^

Not that it will hurt much in Skyrim, it's sucj a good game.

Heh- I love how Skyrim feels like its almost A Song of Ice and FIre type world, what with the northern areas by Dawnstar and Winterhold feeling like the areas north of the Wall or how the Forsworn by Markarth kind of seem similar to the various tribes in the Vale.

Hell, in Dawnstar I even found a legion guy by the name of "Horik Halfhand." Awesome.B)

Hee.  There is also "the Reach."  I wonder if that is a nod both by GRRM and Bethesda to Jack Vance.

It seems to me that the dialogue and tone is a bit more sober this time around, and more sophisticated.  That's probably the biggest improvement in my book.

Lydia just pulled some awesome staff of frost out of her ass. I never gave her one, but I'm in the bowels of a dungeon and suddenly she's just standing there pot shotting enemies and killing them with it before they get to us.

Do Companions level on their own and upgrade their gear in this game?

She probably picked it up.  NPCs will pick stuff off the floor and use it.  I'm a little nervous about all the gear I have strewn around my "dorm room."  I don't trust the containers yet, so I've been dropping stuff.  Last night Belmyra or whatever her name is, came in to talk to me, picked up a potion I had dropped and said something like "oh, you dropped this- good thing I was around to find it" and gave it to me.  I wonder if other NPCs will just walk off with stuff!

So, here's a question.

I've been playing around with different playstyles (sword and sorcery, sword and board, 2handed, archery, pure magic, etc) and I can't seem to find a role I prefer. Which one do you guys prefer?

I decided early on to be 2Handed (now specializing in warhammers) and destruction magic.  My argonian doesn't have the pacience for stealth or subtety lol.

Btw, how do I find Sheogorath? I love that guy.

It's a pretty big spoiler, so I won't post it here, but essentially, talk to everyone you meet in the major cities and pick up all the quests..

PM me if you want to know exactly where to find him.

I'm not going to spoil it either, but let me just say...I am quite pleased with the loot item you get when you complete the quest. Image IPB

Thanks for that.  I just started the quest and saved it for my next session.  Glad people are being good with spoilers here.  Some of us are going slow through this world.

Minoans, Indus Valley, Nan Madol, Goblekli Tepe, Peruvian civilizations prior to the Incas...**** here's something mythological...Atlantis! Even Mayan civilizations suffered from mysterious cataclysms before the arrival of the Spanish.

Consider the highly literate Greco-Roman civilization that in spite having historical records of their rise and fall, still questions about them linger. Even worse for civilizations that have no have no forms of writing, but left a legacy of organization and sophistication in their ruins. How do you find out how they disappeared?

The point I'm making is that fictionalized highly advanced civilizations aren't so much a cliche as they mirror our own personal curiosities about them, which is ultimately integrated in the gameplay experience.

Question:

So like in FO: New Vegas, you could as the PC "create" your backstory by selecting different dialog options if someone asked about your past. Is this possible in Skyrim? Is there anyway you can get to know your character, who he/she is, why he's doing this, how he was born/raised etc.

A big reason why I enjoy RPG is the way I can connect to my PC and to get to know him/her better. So is this possible, or am I just playing a random guy who happens to be Dragonborn?

Unless I'm playing one of those games that boxes you in to playing a specific character, like Geralt, Hawke or Shepard, I usually plan a character backstory before I start playing any RPG.

In the case of Skyrim, you know that you were arrested crossing the border from Cyrodiil into Skyrim, there is a civil war going on and there are escalating racial tensions between Nords, Imperials and Elves.

It could be something as simple as deciding why your character was arrested, or it could involve coming up with a more detailed background taking into account the character's race, profession, wealth, family history, religion, etc., and how this fits into the political and cultural aspects of the world.

You might have been arrested for any number of crimes such as theft, murder, siding with the Stormcloaks, practicing necromancy, worshipping Talos, smuggling skooma, etc., or perhaps you were even framed or unjustly accused. It's a great starting point for creating a character because it leads to other questions, such as "What did you steal, or who did you kill, and why?"

Why do get the feeling that is used a lot in fictions?

Its true.  Ancient civilisations that disapear are plentiful.  But the Elder Scrolls did it before Mass Effect was even conceived.

Hittites... Avars... Etruscans... Many civilizations just went their own way and we do not know how or why they ended. Maybe they never ended at all, they just got absorbed into surrounding peoples. Also consider that the inhabitants of Tamriel are a pseudo-medieval people and it's easy to understand how history can get lost. As others have pointed out, there is actually very little that we *know* even about the Romans and Greeks. Much of it is supposition.

Last night I was playing and found out something rather interesting, you can float down the fast moving rivers. Of course, falling over a waterfalls kills you but I thought it was an ingenious way of escaping the wolf pack attacking me. XD

I'll have to give that a try! I did see that happen with a cave bear last night. I had just set him on fire, and my flame atronach threw a fireball at him immediately after that; the force sent him right into the river, and I found his dead body a ways downstream. My husband was watching the whole thing and laughed, because it all happened so fast.
Image IPB

The only part I regret is that I didn't frap it! XD

My husband was playing and he was headed up to see the grey beards when a dragon attacked. He was near the lady meditating. She jumps up and joins in the fight against the dragon, only to have the dragon grab her and literally toss her off the mountain! LOL It was awesome. Didn't catch that one either.
:D

There is also underwater combat. There are creatures swimming below the surface. ;) Be careful. :) I am going to find out more about those when I find the underwater breathing spell. I found the potion, but not the spell yet.

Yeah i had a couple slaughterfish go at me.  Gotta say not very scared of fish when I'm close to land LOL.  Can't use my weapon or spells underwater though :(.  As for the breathing underwater bit my race doesn't have to worry about that :P

I like to dual wield swords. Also, as far as races go, being a Nord somewhat trivializes most dragon fights. The weakest dragons use fiery breath, which doesn't do much damage at higher levels. The dragons which are supposed to do a lot of damage at higher levels, (frost, blood and ancient dragons), all tend to use frost breath more often than fire. But the 50% frost resistance from being a Nord, combined with a sky high armour rating, means the 'harder' dragons aren't actually harder than the basic ones :/

Also, I finished the civil war questline today, siding with the stormcloaks. Loved Ulfric's line "What we three do here tin this moment will be immortalized in song" at the end with the Legion general. Won't give the context to avoid spoilers, but suffice to say the fact that Bethesda made such an epic storyline, where you assault castles and even cities, just a side questline akin to the guild quests - mind blowing.

Loved Sanguine's quest too. Nice bit of humor there. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be, but I found Sanguine wandering around a fort later. He's immortal, and if you attack him he very politely asks you to stop. Also loving the references to the Neverine and Champion of Cyrodill. (Do Sheogorath's quest for the CoC one).

It was awesome how some of the spell names and people in DAO were from the Elder Scrolls.

After reading the book "the Great War", I wonder what justification people have for siding with the Stormcloaks unless they want the Thalmor to conquer Hammerfell, Cyrodiil and Skyrim in the long run. Skyrim has the advantage of natural borders and rocky terrain, but they would eventually go down against the Elven hordes.

The fact that Thalmor justiciars are already prowling around in Skyrim doing what they want, is already a huge humiliaton for the Empire.

My High Elf, obviously, doesn't care.

Yeah the Thalmor sent Justicars after me.  Saw the order on one of their corpses and I am considered an enemy of the Thalmor and I can't for the life of me figure out why.  I have been staying out of that conflict for the most part.  Hell at this point with all the Forsworn i've killed they should be thanking me.

That book was a great read. Really glad I found it.

The battle for the recapture of the Imperial City was described in a way that would make an epic feature film.

Tamriel has an active scholarship for archaeology. The Mages Guild before it split was trying to figure out why the dwarves blinked out of existence, the causes of which are extraordinary than a slow mundane decline.

Hey guys, I need a yes or no question to this, just a yes or no,nothing else.

Is the civil war quest (imperials vs stormcloaks) separate from the main quest?

I ask this because back when I was playing fallout New vegas I thought the NCR vs Caesers legion quest was just a big super side quest, and was dissapointed when that and the main quest interceded.

So again, yes or no.

I'm pretty sure that it is unrelated, it seems more like a second storyline to me, though I got their first quest and haven't done it yet

Not going to find that here.
Your character might be a brick on the wall.  You will not find a connection with your PC in the game you'll have to make it for your own.  Something all these games have had a problem... Don't know how you dit it in NV.

Early on, when I gave some good stuff I crafted for Lydia, she wouldn't use them. I had to stick to Banded Iron and Iron stuff. That was at level 19 when I received her as reward. Now at level 27, I could give her my Legendary elven Greatsword and Legendary Orcish Armor and she wears them. So yeah, they raise the quality of what they can use, probably based on our level.

And woot for my Legendary Ebony armor and Greatsword. Now I decided even to enchant them all, with rings, amulets and stuff! That's prolly my final gear unless Dragonbone is much better. I won't use Daedric stuff unless they look really cool.
