I noticed that if you give your companion a torch, s/he will use it outside combat. Useful when exploring caves, if you did not know already.

 Let's talk about bows.

I'm playing an Assassin/Archer on master and things are going well. Mooks die in one shot, and I can oneshot Elites with my dagger.

However, I have a problem. I can't decide between smithing or conjuration.

With smithing I can create a daedric bow, which from what I've heard the best bow in the game. This bow can be enchanted and enhanced with poisons.

I want to know how a conjured bow compares, and if the extra utility of summons make it worth the investment.

Thanks in advance. :wizard:

So, I'm a werewolf. A werewolf who, upon the first (quest related, rather than just random infection) transformation ran out into Whiterun and got shot at by the guards. At which point one of the Companions charged at them in my defense and started slapping them around with his puny human fists. After they cut him to ribbons, I ate his corpse. Arroooooooooooohooohoohoooooo.

It's good to be a werewolf.

@ Mi-Chan: Smithing has the advantage (or problem, depending on how you look at it) of allowing you to upgrade your weapons and armour to frankly quite absurd amounts, which you can then give to followers to turn them from semi-effective backup into unstoppable avatars of fury and destruction.

The main deal with Smithing is that you can improve your weapons and armor. And with conjuration you can create a daedric weapon, if I'm not mistaked, for a limited time. And if you have high enough smithing to make daedric, you can improve your weapons and armor to exquisite or flawless, which adds about 15-16 armor or damage to them. So smithing.

And yes, smithing is a little bit overpowered. I'm level 32 and running in Legendary Dragonscale armor. My companion has legendary dragonbone armor.

I'm doing very well with my battlemage focused on perks in destruction magic (fire) and one handed swords.  Its nice having a good balance between magic and melee.  I use summoning to help keep enemies occupied while I burn or slash them.  The daedric artifact Sanguine's Rose is great to have as a mage.  Summons a Dremora with a two handed sword and he packs a deadly swing.  I only wear a combination of my arch-mage robes and light armor.

That's what I'm doing, except I'm wearing heavy armor.  I rarely have magicka problems.  I usually start off with destruction/ conjuration and then when enemies close or if the companion is in the way I hack enemies with my war axe.  It's nice to combine fire spells with a fire-enchanted axe since the enchantment damage is higher if they are already on fire.

Smithing/ enchanting is a long-term investment, but it's really satisfying to be kitted out with stuff you've made and named yourself.

My gripe with smithing armor is that I don't need it. The Dark Brotherhood armor's served me well so far (and it looks spiffy), so smithing some for myself would be a waste. :? I do like the thought of creating a flawless daedric bow though. Decisions decisions.

Eh, my Legendary Glass Armor was far better than the Dark Brotherhood one =/

Daedric stuff is great as far as I know, though I went the light armor path. However, you need Daedric hearts to craft daedric stuff, and those are rare.
But if you are going for a pure rogue like I am, I suggest Smithing. You won't have the mana to make use of all the benefits conjuration gives.

I'm not sure I want to invest in the light AND heavy path for smithing. That's a lot of perks that could be spent in enchantment or alchemy. So unless there's a glass bow comparable to the daedric one I'll choose the heavy side for the daedric bow.

I guess I can make a Conjuration/Illusion/Destruction mage after this so I can stealth around some more. It's so much fun. That, and play with bound weapons. They're shiny. :o

Eh, just make a legendary glass bow and give it the paralyze enchantment. It's hilarious to watch their pathetic struggle when they fall down to the ground from every single shot.

You're right - there's no need to worry too much. :P I'll play around some more and see where this playthrough takes me. It's a single player after all - no need to minmax

@Lestatman, companions can die for good but I think only against very powerful opponents like bosses type Dragons. They do tend to disappear because their path finding is not as free and crazy as a player's can be. If you fast travel somewhere, she should appear next to you. Try travelling to the mark on the map where you are. Crazy game let us do that.

Not sure if it would work if you told her to wait or go home. She should be home in any case.

We got separated while exploring as yes I was taking crazy paths so I didn't get the chance to tell her to wait or go home so I did fast travel and nope she didn't appear so I waited at home for 24 hrs but she didn't arrive and I keep going back home but after 2 wks in game she hasn't appeared back.  If by bad luck she met a dragon and got killed it would be nice to know in game if your companion/follower has died or not rather than not knowing.

Eh, I had that happen to me once. And then I realized that I had told my companion to "Wait here". And he waits there until you tell him/her to follow again.

They always appear right next to you if they are set to follow and you fast travel, though.

So I think that you just forgot to tell your companion to follow you again.

Torches have another cool use.  Shine them in front of locks and they become easier to pick

Hey, does anyone know how to tell how long you've been playing? In Oblivion on Xbox the save showed it, but when I got it for PC it DIDN'T show it, and neither does Skyrim.

On PC, go to your load screen and click on your latest save.

It shows your name, your race, your level, the date, and how long you've been playing that particular game.

Or, go to your Steam account.  And on the page where it shows your acheivements, it also shows how long you've been playing.

It doesn't for me. It just has the list of saves, and when you highlight one it has the picture.

I saw a trio of frost trolls in front of Nightcaller Temple and decided to test my Fire Breath shout. It was beautiful.

I finally killed my first frost troll. It felt magnificent. Also did anyone find the encounter where you get all three words of power for throw voice hard? I'm not talking about the dragon but that wraith or whatever. I actually had to turn god mode to kill it.

Eh, I think so.

And my first frost troll wasn't very exciting. I sunk a dagger in it's back and it died.

Also, if you want to **** around, open console commands and type in TLC. I found it amusing.

I don't know, I don't play the first playthrough ( not sure if it's last) for challenge. Just don't like the combat in Skyrim too much. I use cheats and everything, that make the boring regular chores more endurable.

Haven't needed to use too much yet though, but there's still a lot to go.

If you have to ask yourself that, most likely it doesn't.

Like many here, am having some problems navigating the UI. The manual says that the 'F' key toggles 1st/ 3rd person view, but this ain't working. What is the real answer?

F does toggle it, but you can also use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out of first person.  Also, you can zoom the camera back so far that you can play in isometric view.  Or zoom in close that you get the same view as the over the shoulder aiming view.   That is, if you're not playing on a laptop and using its mouse pad....

Guess I needed to get out off the initial staging area first. Thanks!

Is there a respec funtion? Or will I need to wait for a mod?

Do spellbooks of the same spell increase the power? Or is it a waste of gold?

Thanks folks!
