:lol:. Thats Lydia at her finest.

I gave her a Staff of Bolts that does 40 lightning damage with every hit. She now runs across the country behind me zapping everything that comes into her sight. I'm beginning to regret that...

I enchanted an ebony mace with Soul Trap and gave it to her, and she's been going to town. I had around 50 empty soul gems that are all full, now. We have a system, Lydia and I: I give her empty gems, she fills them, and I enchant the crap out of everything.

Does she actually use the soul gems to top up her enchanted weapons? I find it annoying having to take the weapons off her, top them up and them give them back. Its like dealing with someone who can't operate their phone.

I don't think companions deplete magic item charges.

quick questions:

1. can you have more than one companion?

2. can you give your companion a horse? (i'm sick of lydia walking on foot while i gallop ahead, lol)

You can have all of the companions you want, you can only travel with one humanoid + one dog + one horse at a time. They will wait for you to ask them to join you again, so you can switch between different companions.

(There are however, a couple of quests where some other NPC joins you part of the time. Some of these require your permanent companion to wait at home, while others seem to allow for the temporary quest companion to fight alongside your permanent companion.)

Companions cannot ride horses.

bah.

I'm really hoping mods can fix that, i'm so used to Bioware party-based games :P

Actually, they do deplete the charge. Last night, I had to keep taking the soul trap mace from Lydia, and re-charging it with soul gems. I noticed this was the case with every staff, bow, etc. that was enchanted. Even if the companion has full gems in their inventory, they don't apply them.

@Alex - you should have your 2h warrior learn some Conjuration magic. For a while there, I had an entourage of Lydia, Barbas, and my conjured flame Atronach. It was awesome. I eventually told Barbas to take a hike, though. Why on earth do they push you around like they do? Arrgh, annoying!

I'm sure there will be some mods like that; however, IMO the combat difficulty seems to be tailored to rolling with one companion.

If you are able to run around with 3 companions, I think they would steal all your thunder and make the game a bit too easy, even on the highest difficulty setting.

Good to know - it seemed otherwise, but perhaps my companion simply wasn't using the item enough yet.

I thought that at first too, I noticed charges weren't depleting on weapons I gave her. I don't know whats changed but now she depletes that staff constantly and has depleted a couple of swords.

Steam just downloaded something and I have no clue what it was. Quick, everyone quit out of your games so it can update. Also, if someone possibly knows what it is, I'd like to know.

Maybe the first few enchanted items you gave her had a high number of charges applied to them, so it wasn't a noticeable change when they were used?

I went into a mine and found a lever that released a whole entire vast section I had missed before.

Heading up soon to High Hrothgar, haven't been up to talk to the Greybeards yet. Although I think I know where the story might be heading. Holy crap its gonna be awesome.

55 hours in and level 20. I'm officially a Conjurer.

I thought they seemed to deplete staves but not melee weapons, but maybe I just haven't noticed their weapons aren't charged?? I'll have to keep a closer eye out.

I considered that but then remembered that the only reason I gave her the enchanted sword was because it wasn't enchanted very well with a low charge level and I'd made a better one. Maybe she just wasn't using it as much as I thought she was or something but I found myself under the impression that she was using it without it depleting. Odd.

Me again. :P As I've mentioned I'm playing an Assassin-esque character, and I've found that I have room for an extra skill tree. So it's boiled down to Alchemy or Enchantment.

Which one do you guys prefer? :wizard:

Enchantment can result in massively powerful weapons.

however, Alchemy is a much more fun choice for role-playing an assassin. I'm playing a similar character.

Why not go with Alchemy but get a couple of perks in enchanting as well?

That would require losing points elsewhere.  Is critical shot worth the investment or can I drop points there?

I'm not sure I understand how companions choose which weapons to use. I mean...sometimes Lydia does exactly what I expect her to; then others, I look over, and she's using a bow at close range. Maybe she/they switch weapons more than any of us notice?

I would go Alchemy. It's versatile and invaluable.

I have the first rank of Critical Shot - it's great and I plan to get the other perks eventually, but most essential for archery is Eagle Eye + Steady Hand. That one is a gamechanger.

Playing on "master" difficulty setting as a level 35 stealthy thief/assassin character who started out primarily dual wield daggers but now uses archery frequently (because the Steady Hand perk is too much fun):

I have found the following perks to be invaluable:

1. Assassin's Blade (allows you to one-shot or two-shot many enemies with 15x dagger damage)

2. Eagle Eye + Steady Hand (slows time when firing arrows - you can shoot about 10 arrows before a charging draugr scourge reaches you for example )

3. Power Shot (allows you to interrupt the shouts of dragons, dragon priests, draugr, mage spell casting, etc.)

The following perks are also very helpful:

- Stealth (I only got 2 ranks, already pretty powerful but will get the others)
- Muffled Movement
- Backstab
- Deadly Aim
- Silence
- Critical Shot
- Armsman
- Dual Flurry (haven't got 2nd rank yet, but this is coming, along with dual savagery)
- Savage Strike (you can decapitate enemies with daggers)
- Shadow Warrior (when you crouch during combat, most enemies suddenly ignore you, has a very cool "shadow cloud" effect if you are playing in third person)
- Smithing/improving Elven items (go up to glass and dragonscale if you enjoy smithing)

Personally I don't think the "Hunter's Discipline" or Ranger perks are that helpful or necessary.

Don't get me started on trying to arm her. I gave her an enchanted elven bow which she used twice and then switched back to her default hunting bow that doesn't appear in her inventory, elven bow still has over 3/4 of its charge left too. She seems to randomly switch between a two handed sword, mace/shield and mace/staff when she isn't using the bow. I can get her to wear helmets and chest pieces but not boots or arm guards. She is a riddle.

Although if I take all her other options away and say just leave the mace/shield combo then she will stick to those except when she randomly pulls out the inferior hunting bow for close range encounters.

Weird. She uses exactly what I gave her, always. Open her trade window and see if the items are marked with the equipped sign. Some stuff I had to wait until she was high level enough to use them. Now she uses only the Ebony armor set I enchanted and improved for her plus amulet and ring, Ebony enchanted 2-handed greatsword and 1-handed sword and shield + the elven enchanted bow. I have no idea how she chooses what to use but she only uses those items.

Speech!!! I want to be filthy rich and buy everything and everyone around! I was going to lose my head, now I own the country! (Still level 45 but I'll make it!)

There is a problem with the Calculator though. It doesn't take into consideration the absurd amout of Levels we gain from Skills we will never spend a Perk Point on. Like, my Lockpicking at 75 now, Sneak at 40, Alchemy at 40, Restoration at 50. So in the end we need more levels above 50, unless we can keep increasing the necessary skill for our builds if 50 is cap.

Did the new patch break the memory extender for anyone else? My game is back to crashing frequently and any attempt to make the program large address aware manually causes Steam to spit out Error 51 and refuse to start the game.

Apparently it stops us from playing without Steam, previously TESV.exe could be run without Steam running, and unfortunately for those of us with modded inis and who have patched the exe with the large address aware patch we have to do it al over again.

LOL. Found a naked female "Gambler" in a Bandit's Den somewhere, along with some more "Gamblers". Were they playing Strip Poker? hahaha
