Seeing that magic actually does kick ass in Skyrim, maybe I'll make a Breton mage after all.

Damn part one of that video is so good I don't even have words for it. Thank god ME3 has been delayed because I don't think I'm going to want to play anything for months after I get Skyrim.

Naughty99 your officially a forum hero!

Musical instruments, short skirts and maces are all things I don't remember seeing in Oblivion.

The more I see of this game the more I want it.

I'm very glad they took a few pointers from the Gothic games. You can cook food and do jobs like harvesting, smithing etc.

Musical instruments

I think there will be a location called The Bard's College - maybe you can learn how to play the instruments there LOL

I'm loving the map and the menu system in general. Even the dialogue system looks nice!

Interesting, I can't see the screens in your post, but I see the ones in my earlier post.

How can this be?

Just watched the first video! I want to give my impressions before I watch the second one. Glad X-Play was interviewing, too!

This was more than I dreamed of seeing, and its part one. It is absolutely amazing...Bethesda has outdone themselves and crossed into an entire new realm of epicness. My thoughts on various things:

Environment- Absolutely gorgeous. I loved the setting, and the detail is incredible. I love where they show the first plants, then look up to the mountain. Astronomical improvement over Oblivion, I don't think there can even really be a comparison. The lush green is vivid with life, the flowers look detailed and it was a nice shout out to alchemists. I wanted to see the "all the way" draw distances, and by golly, they did just that while showing the duel-wield spell combination effect. That area was picked on purpose, because you look out and just as far as you can see, way off into the distance....detailed land, mountains and trees. Lakes, streams. It was spectacular.

Combat- What can I say? You have full freedom, and the loadouts for hotkeys look simple and very fast, with only the briefest of pause...and even that adds a subtle turned-base flavor. The animations are mostly fluid and organic. I like how you can see your shield now if you have one equipped and aren't using it. The finishing move was satisfying, although I'm curious if kill blows are always shown like that or if only when you select a finish. And, of course, spells. Astounding spell effects. No doubt somewhere, if not already, it will be criticized for being "ripped" from Bioshock, but it fits The Elder Scrolls perfectly, and the fact is that if something is so innovative it will become industry standard. The massive spell effect for the cost of double magicka is awesome, and fair, as well. That effect is very empowering. I'm no doubt at some point, maybe often, going to need to use double healing during dragon fights...but I can't just start releasing massive electrocution like spells, unless I take a potion, because that form of healing is so-called expensive in magicka. Very fair.

Horses- While Howard said the goal was Red Dead Redemption quality, I don't know if it is or not, but it looks friggin good. Very good. I will definitely not be fast travelling at all in this game.

Culture- While just given a brief look, the town looks alive and it was super cool to walk up and see someone hard at work, minding own affairs. Non-zoomed in view is much welcome and needed, and the NPC looks solid in design. Didn't hear voice acting yet from that. The town of Riverwood looked detailed and bustling....doing its own thing without you needed, giving an immense feel of realism. When you strolled in, it just felt so alive.

User interface- Wanted to see this badly, and blown away. The inventory seems on the surface to be simple and well organized...very appealing to use. The rotatable, zoomable 3D images were unbelievably detailed. It was spectacular. As was the skill trees for levelling. It was very, very creative, and it was so nest to see you zoom through the trees. It gives levelling a truly organic tangible feel.

I'm now checking out video 2...more personal impressions to come.

Holy freaking cow, guys and girls. I cannot believe this....this could be one of the greatest games ever. Seriously. It's mind blowing.

It was so incredible that Adam Sessler literally got tongue-tied for a few seconds there at one point.

Apparently there are 300 books in the game

This game is becoming more and more a "Gothic 3 done right", in my book. Gothic 3 had the same living world that Skyrim seems to have, but lacked proper combat and the lore & depth of the Elder Scrolls setting.

Hopefully Bethesda can also adopt some of the faction system & moral ambiguity of the Gothics.

Interesting - I really need to try Gothic 1 & 2. I got them in a Steam package deal last year but haven't had time to install them yet. Hated Gothic 4, felt ripped off after I bought it.

In any case, 300 freaking books! That says a lot about the dev team's attitude when painstakingly crafting this work of art that could turn out to be a masterpiece.

In order for it to be a masterpiece it's going to need better writing the previous Bethseda games.

while i like oblivion better, one of the things i liked about morrowind was a main quest that took a while to do, not like oblivion where you would only be level 3 if you just done the main quest.

In the span of a couple years playing, I still haven't gotten around to completing the main quest of Oblivion. I will probably do it around 11.10.11

I have heard that the main quest of Oblivion takes around 10-15 hours and that Morrowind was roughly the same (I know there are speed runs for both where somebody finishes the game in  10 minutes, but ignoring that.)

Todd has mentioned in several interviews that the MQ of Skyrim is around 20 hours.

In any case, I imagine it must involve some epic civil war battles and considering this backdrop, hopefully the PC will take a larger role in the outcome, choosing sides and supporting one faction or the other.

I remember watching my friend play Oblivion (he had rented it whent it just came out)  he fast travelled to each quest point to grind through it like crazy.  I asked him why was he doing that?  "umm Its a rental dude I don't have forever with the game."  Then why not buy it so you can enjoy the game more?  "PFFFT this fast travel thing ruins it even if there are side quests I can just fast travel everywhere and be done."
I got bored with his way of playing and got the game for myself obviously I haven't even gotten close to getting through the main quests (hell most of the faction quests went untouched.)  The only thing I really did was the Shivering Isles.
What really got me with watching my friend is how he constantly used fast travel and then complained about it....  UMM its not mandatory in fact I ignore the fast travel (hell only time I ever use it is if I get stuck in the ground or something)

TL:DR?  The Elder Scrolls games are about exploration if you come in expecting a linear questline than go somewhere else there are enough linear games to shake a stick at.  I for one don't ever want Bathesda to change :D

LOL he kept complaining about the Fast Travel but kept using it.
I don't know about you but i think if you keep complaining about your own play style then maybe you should change it?
Good job missing my point.

The problem with Oblivion is quests tended to bounce you all over the map rather than being local to cities and surrounding areas. Horses were useless with the necessity to move from one end to the other (and everything in between is boring).

No, I think I got it, because it's the same one you've been expressing for a few pages. It's the same concern I expressed: Oblivion had a measly main quest that invalidated the need to "explore". More to the point, the length and scope of the quest invalidated the open world aspect of the game for me. There simply was no point. And I enjoy open world games. I'm glad I got Oblivion for $10, because that's how much it was worth to me. Morrowind was brilliant. Oblivion was a few dozen steps backwards.
