The only person I've seen mention what happened so far is Igmund and that was just a couple of lines, nothing which painted Ulfric in a better light. Who gives this clearer picture then?
I'm not here to hold your hand through your journeys in Markarth and the Reach to help you figure it out.
You can talk to Thongvor Silver-Blood and Banning out next to the stables, for one. You can also, you know, do your own research and learn a little about the Forsworn instead of relying on me or some NPC to give you lessons on the subject.
Perhaps I was being too subtle for someone as condescending and stuck up as you. When I asked who gives this clearer picture I meant that I've talked to virtually everyone in Markarth and so far nobody has actually said anything which proves the book to be "Imperial Propaganda" or that Ulfric isn't a racist scumbag who isn't worth siding with. The book brings up accusations against Ulfric and his militia, that they executed all the Markarth advisors that worked for the Forsworn during their rule, tortured native women to get information about the Forsworn, killed any Nord children old enough to fight if they didn't fight for Ulfric when his forces attacked the city. Sure, it could all be lies, but nobody brings any of these things up apart from the book, nobody provides any proof that Ulfric did or did not do these things. Nobody has provided proof of anything, only their own opinion, which is my point. You dismissed the book out of hand as being propaganda, which it quite likely is, but virtually everyone in the game is using opinion and propaganda rather than any actual evidence. The whole civil war conflict is a game of chinese whispers, second hand rumours of who did what. We don't even have any proof as to whether the fight between Ulfric and Toryyg was an honourable duel or a murder, each side has it's own version but there's no truth. If only there was some piece of evidence that using the Thu'um in a duel is a recognised and acceptable part of such duels in Skyrim that would be something, but so far I've not seen anything that says so.
In the end it all comes down to which side your character believes is most likely telling the truth. Personally I'd rather side with the Stormcloaks, and through courageous and honourable deeds become more popular and important to the cause than Ulfric, and eliminate him for the good of everybody. Steer the cause in a much better direction, like unifying Skyrim, and gathering a new army of heroes, moulded in the image of Ysgramor and the five hundred and having Skyrim, Hammerfall and others rise up to stop the real threat of the Thalmor once and for all. At least amongst the Stormcloak soldiers and supporters I've found some good people whereas the pro-Imperials seem to be less sympathetic. But my options are limited to side with the faction that wanted to execute my character for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or side with the racist scumbag who potentially commited war crimes that make him almost as bad as the Thalmor.
