I'm starting to get my ass handed to me by mages in this game. Fought some Dunmer mage yesterday that kept killing me in two hits with some kind of lightning attack. I also just got massacred by a hagraven a little bit ago who killed me in three fireballs (and the only reason it was three and not one is because I got a Block perk halving elemental damage).

It's pretty ridiculous. How am I supposed to defend against this sort of thing?

I feel your pain.  Running a sword and board Redguard myself.  I'm finding the block perk so-so.  Useful against dragons, but room full of mages? Not so much.  You can move out of the way of the bolt type attacks, but if the mage is using ice shards or cone of xx attacks, I find it easier to close the gap between me and the mage with whirlwind shout and then bash/stagger/hack the mage to death.  Other way is to sneak, have it pew pew on to my companion (Lydia) and snipe with archery.  Room full of mages?  I summon something and pray that it's enough bodies around to keep the enemy occupied.  :(  I hate mages in this game.

Black Marsh and Hammerfell have become independent, with the latter not having lost an inch of land to the Aldmeri, and the former even gaining land by expanding into Morrowind. Morrowind has been shattered, with a giant sea where Vvardenfell and the coast of the Sea of Ghosts used to be (Your interpretation of how much of Morrowind was flooded may differ from mine).

Southern Morrowind has fallen to the Argonians, while the Empire has managed to hold on to the north-western sections directly over the border. North-eastern Morrowind, Telvannis, remains independent. I kept those parts from the Argonians because the lore states they conquered southern Morrowind; which means the other parts need to go somewhere else. The Telvanni and their millenia-old wizard leaders managing to hold off the Argonians doesn't sound too crazy, so I went with that.

The Empire has been reduced to Skyrim, High Rock, Cyrodiil and north-western Morrowind. I transferred Leyawiin to the Aldmeri Dominion, as the lore states they conquered it and it has long been a target of Khajiit irredentism; it seemed logical for them to keep it. Many will probably disagree with this, though, since it isn't explicitly stated they did. The borders between Cyrodiil and Valenwood remain the same, with a few minor alterations in the Dominion's favor. (Due to me failing at drawing the original borders, mostly :P. Same with Hammerfell and Black Marsh.)

Thoughts?

Great map!
Interestingly, if Ulfric wins and Skyrim gains independence, then High Rock becomes isolated from the rest of the Empire. That will make it easy for the Thalmor to conquer Cyrodiil.

Well don't you people have luck.
I usually find them on some dragons, hardly ever on bandits and chests. If I do find some gems there either common with no soul. It's tiring after awhile. So I just enchant 24/7.
I have..lets see... 3 soul gems left..maybe 2. :pinched:

You find them in Forsworn and dwemer areas, but the difference is probably that I spend them very carefully.  I don't just enchant everything.

My Enchantment skill is pretty much non-existent - so short of spending copious amounts of time and/or money to raise it up, I don't know how I'm supposed to go about doing that.

Hammerfell is largely unaffected by Thalmor spies (now) and would be the key to winning the war IMO. They have not only proven themselves able to dig in and beat the Dominion by themselves, but they are the Empire's best sailors and are the province least likely to be under Thalmor influence. Of course, Hammerfell completely split off from the Empire, but it's obvious they will come back to the fold when the Empire declares war on the Dominion.

So what I see you saying is that an area can more effectively prepare for war when the Thalmor have been kicked out.  The Stormcloaks are going to do the empire a favor.  And independent Skyrim will be able to prepare for war without interference.

In terms of preparations, really, what can a few hundred Thalmor agents who are kept at arm's length really do?

At best, they spy and relay information back to the Dominion - that's their job. But they can't stop the actual war effort. I mean, it's not like they can go to the Jarls or Lords or w/e and demand that they stop training levies, or stop producing weapons.

And the Dominion is just going to stand by while the empire leisurely gears itself up, supposing that it actually is going to do that?  If they are that weak, then Skyrim doesn't need Cyrodiil anyway.

Okay, I think my battle with Alduin is bugged.  I threw ice spikes at him and shouted Dragonrend until I got his health bar to nothing, but he's still hovering and I'm still getting pelted with stones and fire and nothing is happening.  The other dragon is circling, and I thought maybe I had been attacking Paarthurnax the whole time, except that I watched the health bar on Alduin go down.  I'm assuming others have been able to finish this battle?  I'm sick of it and just want to finish the damn thing.

edit:  Eek, I'm seeing an entirely different battle setup on YouTube- "help the heroes of Sovngarde"- I never got that option at all?

With a shield that gives you +50% resist shock, resist fire or resist magic (also if you shield bash mages it interrupts their spells)

and/or drinking potions of 20-30% resist shock, resist fire or resist magic

and/or wearing boots of 40%-50% resist shock, resist fire or resist magic

and/or if you complete one of the Daedric quests, you get a really cool set of light armor that provides 25% resist magic and 50% resist poison

and/or if you use The Lord standing stone, you get 25% resist magic and 50 points of damage resistance

Elemental Fury is the answer to all problems which involve something needing to die.

Yup. An independent Skyrim will make High Rock nearly impossible to govern. Which pretty much means the death of the Empire.

Finally after days of no dragons I find one in the distance I get there as quick as possible kill it only to have it not give me a soul... Ok so it must've been one I killed already :( oh well more bones.
On the upside I finally got into the Dark Brotherhood. Great introduction at this point my character is all up for killing people for profit he sure as hell tired of doing the right thing.
On another note I'm considering starting a new game with a different style. Been thinking of a archer duel welding stealthy person. I got the badass 2handed destrecto guy thinking of alternating between the 2 chars if I do.

This playing style is a lot of fun - stealth gameplay is orders of magnitude better implemented than Oblivion and Morrowind.

Nope. Cyrodiil's actually even a bit larger in the south-west than it should be, thanks to my craptastic drawing skills.

Oh! I see, I was looking at it wrong! Anyway, great job!

Agreed. Stealth and archery have been my primary skills throughout my entire playthrough. I only pull out my axe and shield when I get discovered or when stealth isn't an option.

I find that wearing heavy armor also makes little-to-no difference when it comes to sneaking thanks to certain perks, so you won't have to worry too much about which armor type you use.

I've got a quest active that says you can keep getting work from the Companions, but every time I talk to any of them they just give me jobs I've already completed. Rumor has it that Farkas and/or Vilkas will also request a way for them to be cured of their curse, but I'm just not getting these to trigger. Could anyone kindly point me to somewhere that could help me debug this questline?

I don't believe it is a bug.
And Farkas is the only one who wants a cure, not Vilkas btw.

You should of gotton the quest to help cure Farkas shortly near the ending of the Compainions or when the storyline is over, and you just get contracts from them. If you haven't gotton it, do a job for Farkas and see if it appears. I don't really know any other way for it to appear.

And also, there really is no "completeting" getting the work from the companions leaders. There just there if you want to go do stuff, you get at least 3 different jobs. They'll randomize so you'll pretty much get the same job everytime, when this triggers, stop getting work from that leader and go to someone else. You'll just be repeating the same thing, as you have already figured out.

If all this fails you, you should go to bethseda's skyrim forums and poke around there and ask for help.

I may try going there, thanks. I think the problem is that I married Farkas as soon as the main Companion quests were over so I'm no longer getting any option from him to take jobs of any sort. :(

I think it's bugged because the only time I get the "do a job for Farkas" line in his dialogue is when I am on a quest for someone else and he tells me to finish that job first.  When I go back, the "got any work for me" line disappears from Farkas' dialogue.  I have been doing the rescue someone or retrieve an item quest for vilkas for the last four levels....it's bugged.  I never got the "I don't want to be a werewolf" quest and so I am stuck as a werewolf as well.  I think it's because I didn't realize that I needed to do the radiant quests as I was doing the main companion quests.  Now, I think, it's too late.

Are you an Enchanter? And a Smithy? Craft a nice set of Amulet and Rings and have a few potions. Save the armor for enchantments you will use all the time. When needed, just switch rings and amulet. I have a +fire+shock res amulet and a +fire+cold res ring. I've also brewed, bought and found potions of resistance so those + jewelry = almost no damage from elemental attacks.

I also don't understand what problems you guys are having in finding Soul Gems. I find them so much. Even in stores when I wanted the smaller ones to train Enchanting. I must have over 100lbs of filled and empty Grand Soul Gems at my gems chest. I only take a few with me. Some to recharge items, some to fill with bosses' souls.

My Ebony Greatsword does 376 dmg + 31 Fire Damage +Soul Trap if target dies in 2 seconds. My crafting and enchanting. I use that only for bosses or really tough foes. A Nord Hero Greatsword with 330 DMG + 31 Fire damage handles everything else.

Well, ****. You're right. I took destroyed to mean.. well, destroyed, but what was meant was "covered in ash and debris and completely uninhabitable." Which is strange, really, considering the Sea of Ghosts was created by Red Mountain's last eruption.

I'm not a big magic user outside of left handed fire, but I'm quickly converting to the path of righteousness through enchanting.  At first it was a pain (what the hell?, I have to learn something else?), then as I grinded at it, the more it delivered.  All I would do is disenchant any magic items you pick up in dungeons, caves and battles, (that you don't want to actively use and defintely don't sell them!) and just gain the enchantments themselves.  Then just start enchanting random, virtually worthless, items you pick-up (iron daggers, armor, swords etc) with your learned enchantments and petty or low-level soul gems to level the skill.  Then sell them for cash.  Eventually, you'll be able to enchant your own crap with higher level enchantments.  I'm nowhere near where I want to be with enchantments, but I'm moving in the right direction finally.

As far as dealing with mages, I absolutely hate necros and pyros.  I'm primarily dual wielding or sword and shield and they used to routinely kick my ass in two hits, especially if there is more than one.  Unless, you're willing to cave in and start becoming an all the time magic user, I would simply charge them (with an occasional dodge of course) and shield bash them (2nd perk I think, is very effective as staggering/interupt).  Once I can stun them, I pretty much own them with a fire echanted axe.  Taking the elemental defense perk (or enchanting your shield) on blocking really neutralizes their attack, allowing you to charge straight at them with an occasional shield raise until you can get in close enough to bash 'em.  Just how I do it from the brute force and ignorance perspective; I'm sure there are for more refined and effective techniques depending on your build-type.

You could've quoted yourself 2 pages back :P.

The answer is probably: "No". There is no Orc version of the creation myth, which means it is difficult to determine whether they are pro- or anti-Lorkhan/Talos/Shor, which is the main factor which would affect what the Thalmor think of them.

I kind-of-not-really fixed my map, which was simply a matter of adding the island back in. Not entirely sure how I can show "This island is owned by no one and uninhabitable" on a map. I do know that leaving it blank is probably not the way.

The borders are still off, and the Telvanni surviving is still strange, but it's the best I can do. Maybe someone with more talent will come along and improve on the concept.

I agree with you all. It is amazing! I can stand a few feet away from a guy, when he should see me, and snipe him right in the face.

So what build set up are you guys using for your archers? I went Archery, Light Armor, Sneak, Alchemy, Enchanting, Speech and I may do the Heavy Armor side of the Smithing Tree to make the Daedric Bow. I'm not grabbing everything in a single Skill Tree, just getting the most useful perks. I've got a hodge podge of everything now. The only tree I will max is Archery.

@greengoron89 I'm starting to wonder though if Heavy Armor is better than Light Armor, even for sneaky characters. But doesn't it contribute highly to your detection level regardless of perks? Even so, I guess basic Heavy Armor will provide more protection without any perks invested in the skill tree if your Smithing skill is high and you have potions to bolster it further. I have two ranks in Light Armor and I'm rarely getting hit so I'm starting to think it was a waste. Those perks could have gone a long way somewhere else.

You don't have to spend a penny to raise your enchanting skill.  Every time you find a piece of magical gear you don't want, just take it to an enchanter table and disenchant  it to learn the property.  You'll see your Enchanting skill start  flying upwards after that.

Enchanting your companion favored weapon as a soul harvester allows them to fill your soul gems quick too. I enchanted my bow as well and we have a pile of filled soul gems.  I'll say it again, you guys were absolutely right about the power of enchanting.  Once I started enchanting Mjoll's items, there have been very few challenges in any given fight.
