My Enchantment skill is pretty much non-existent - so short of spending copious amounts of time and/or money to raise it up, I don't know how I'm supposed to go about doing that.

You don't have to spend a penny to raise your enchanting skill.  Every time you find a piece of magical gear you don't want, just take it to an enchanter table and disenchant  it to learn the property.  You'll see your Enchanting skill start  flying upwards after that.

Also not a bad idea to use petty soul gems to enchant all the random jewelry items you encounter. increases the resell value and improves your enchanting skill

You use an enchanting altar and first disenchant items (destroying them in the process) to learn their enchantments.  Then you select an item, an enchantment and a soul gem and you can rename the item before you enchant it.

I've never enchanted anything, in any game I've ever played.  I was amazed how easy it was and was left wondering why I didn't start it immediately with the first magical items I found that I didn't want.  Just start by disenchanting any magic items you find that you don't want.  Mix that enchantment you learn with any random item and any soul gem...done!  You just levelled once or twice right there. Use enchanting. That and smithing give you almost complete control over each and every encounter.

I spent around 40k buying soulgems to train enchanting, in two long sessions. Once to reach 80 and later, after questing, looting and stuff, to reach 100. Disenchanting or enchanting only with what you find would take me much longer.

With plain leather bracers and enchanting them, my only trouble was to find enough small soulgems, which I did by taking the carriage around the country and buying them. There are at least two stores in any major city that sells them and they replenish stock before your next visit. The miscellaneous and the court magician's stores.

It seemed expensive at the time but really, I couldn't have made better investment. Now with my amulet +25% Better Price, better than what game can give, plus the  Mask of Clavicus Vile (+20% on helmet. Unique item since we cannot enchant helmet with that) and my 100 Speech, I made so much money so fast that I'm sitting on 130k and nothing much to spend. I keep crafting and enchanting stuff to my companions to spend a little of that and I gain around 20k every dungeon so my fortune is increasing very fast. Filthy rich. I'm gonna be filthy rich! heh

You can only disenchant things that have enchantments you haven't learned before, though, so this starts to get less effective as time goes on.  Also it still costs something because you could have sold all those things you're disenchanting.  But that's what I like about how they set up the skills this time.  There is real cost to learning them.  Same with alchemy- potions and ingredients weigh more, you can't make potions from common food ingredients and without perks your potions are really only good for selling.

Yes, also I noticed that the higher the value of the enchanted or disenchanted item, the greater the boost to your Enchanting skill.

However, it was quite fun to practice combining different alchemical ingredients to make potions, and I discovered quite a lot of useful potion recipes at low level.

I even discovered the recipe for potions of invisibility, paralysis, slow enemy, etc., not to mention damage health/restore health/stamina, resist frost, fire, shock, magic, etc. I found these potions to be helpful even at low level with no perks in alchemy.

The trouble for me is that I haven't came across that many enchanted items. Then again, I'm only a level 20.

Well don't you people have luck.
I usually find them on some dragons, hardly ever on bandits and chests. If I do find some gems there either common with no soul. It's tiring after awhile. So I just enchant 24/7.
I have..lets see... 3 soul gems left..maybe 2. :pinched:

You find them in Forsworn and dwemer areas, but the difference is probably that I spend them very carefully.  I don't just enchant everything.

Ugh. Hate them Forsworn.
I just found a few in the Thalmor Embassy. I broke in there for fun and found 2 more. So yay for me:wizard:
Like I said earlier, I stay out of Dwemer areas cause of 2 reason.
1. I hate them spheres. They sneak up on me and scare the shizzle outta me.
2. I hate the gears. Im constantly looking around making sure I won't die by spiders..^_^
This game has made me frightened of Spiders now, and I know, I'm a sissy for saying that.

But I can go into Forsworn and maybe find..1 tops.
So I just..have lost hope in them.

Enchanting has been Jesus too me lately.

This playing style is a lot of fun - stealth gameplay is orders of magnitude better implemented than Oblivion and Morrowind.

Agreed. Stealth and archery have been my primary skills throughout my entire playthrough. I only pull out my axe and shield when I get discovered or when stealth isn't an option.

I find that wearing heavy armor also makes little-to-no difference when it comes to sneaking thanks to certain perks, so you won't have to worry too much about which armor type you use.

Oh I already know how fun stealth is thanks to a certain spell.  Now a mage can do the thieves quests with little trouble.

After 75+ hours of great fun, CTDs got too much for me to continue at this point. It's a shame this is happening and I may have lost a whole lot of gameplay hours due to at seems to be a corrupted save (and every subsequent save being done on that one). I'm not facing random CTDs but very specific ones around WIndhelm area. This "new" engine seems an awful lot like the old one...

Anyway, I'm waiting for patches to see if this gets fixed; if not, I'll just restart when I eventually feel like playing it again. 75+ hours was already a lot more than what I invested in many other games out there.

Aside from bugs, they just needed mounted combat like Mount&Blade, companion interaction at least one third comparable to BioWare's and separated saves for different characters to be a perfect RPG.

Cheers.

Someone else mentioned they got a lot of CTDs after having too many savegame files. you might try moving most of the savegame files to a different folder on your computer.

In my case, I haven't had many CTDs even after 170 hours or so, a few times mainly when attempting to take a screenshot.

Yeah, mages are totally OP in Skyrim (mages are often OP in most RPG games though). A mage can do pretty much everthing a thief or a warrior can do and sometimes even better. It's not fair. But well, I don't care. I refuse to make a pure-mage character. I enjoy my thief too much.

Anyone else think 20,000 is a rather pitiful amount to be paid for the final dark brotherhood? I mean you can get 800 for doing some pretty menial tasks.

I'm only level 30ish and I've learned about every enchantment there is.  Are you doing a lot of dungeon diving?

I backtracked to avoid the trouble I was having with Alduin and instead finished the civil war quest line.  Not much changes- I was hoping to have a chance to cut Elisif's pretty head off.  Letting her remain as jarl is foolish.  You might as well ask her to spy for the empire.

OTOH it's quite impressive to see Ulfric using the thu'um in battle and Imperial soldiers go flying every which way.

I am having a lot of CTD's too.  Very annoying.

I'm not doing a pure mage either.  I use my fire spells for distance and got my warhammer Moljnir for the upclose personal kills.

Well, I found a conjure familiar staff which, needless to say I would never use; so I gave it to Mjoll to pack out of whatever cave we'd found ourselves in.

Next thing I know fighting a bunch of Forsworn a-holes, I have a badass wolf fighting along side me ripping them up! It is so cool when she actually uses the stuff I toss aside as crapola, to a surprising effect. She's now walking around dual weilding fire staffs. I've got her outfitted with a diversity of weaponry and it's always interesting to see what she'll drag out in the next fight.

I'm just wondering what her Magicka and destruction score is. Seems to be better than mine.

I really like how loot in general has more meaning than IV. Stuff isn't thrown at you quite as much. Whenever I find myself a very powerful staff, it'll have more meaning. I also like how staff power is directly related to PC skill.

She not only doesn't get executed but she remains jarl? That's disappointing

Sexy. Looking forward to that! <3

Anyone here not bother with fast travel or carriages much? I almost exclusively walk or ride my horse to my destinations - the scenery is just so breathtaking, I can't help but go out of my way just to see it all.

And the music, which perfectly reflects whatever is happening or wherever you are in-game, just makes it all the more magnificent to behold. I'm considering buying the OST when it comes out, the music is just that good.
