It happens every time a popular game comes out. Someone says that other games should be like it. Feh.

That's called roleplay. You are expected to work out such things for yourself, typically over several playthroughs. I'm not finishing any guild in this run.MrDizaztar wrote...
I currently playing Skyrim right now and I love the game, but I have one major problem with it. My problem stems from the fact that you can literally join all the guilds in the game and there doesn't seem to be any repercussion for doing so. I mean does it make any sense that my Dovahkiin is Harbinger of the Companions, Archmage of the College, memeber of the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and member of the Bard's College?

They do have major skills, but they seem to use whatever is highest damage. Give them a staff of fireballs and suddenly you're standing in the middle of an inferno. I notice that Vorstag will also equip fancy jewelry rather than his enchanted items if I give them to him for storage. What a princess!Sidney wrote...
BTW, companion equipment what logic is used to determine what they equip. I've got Lydia. She has a sword and shield so I figure her for a one handed type and give her a sword and shield (although she will only use her shield for some reason not whatever I give her). Things are peachy. She has issues where she intermittently pulls out a bow at odd times but whatever. Then I dump a 2 handed sword on her to mule around and she immediately equips it. The sword did more damage then her one handed weapon but is that the only question. Even more odd I gave her a pair of staffs to also mule about and she decided to dual wield those items for one of the odder looks in the game.
Do the NPC's have actual skills behind the scenes and if so does that play into their weapon selection?
Action shot!

Let's also note the realistic blood spatter. Thank the divines.

Aela is going to be the death of me. I equip her with an Ebony Bow because I thought she was decent in archery. I mean seriously she is a archery trainer. However, it seems that every time she pulls out her bow, she pulls out a hunting bow, even though she isn't equipped with one.Addai67 wrote...

But that is a roleplay choice, then. If you're relying on scrounged armor, you're going to look a bit piecemeal. I think that's a decent RP path and there's nothing wrong with it. You have to accept its limitations, however. I've been wearing enchanted steel armor for 35 levels, and only now just am starting to find ebony armor pieces. I'll probably keep wearing my steel for a while because I'm doing other things besides smithing.Sidney wrote...
My problem is that you can't function very well without the skills like you could without sneak or restoration because looting and buying simply don't give you access to quality upgrades. Sans any sort of crafting Lydia is just now in Orcish armor at level 28 and my mage is still rolling in Eleven Armor that I had to smith up to fine and then enchant so my mage can still cast spells. That Elven armor has been on me for about 10 levels now.
In the end I play games to feel heroic. Beowulf, Roland, Aragorn, Arthur and that lot didn't do a lot of manual labor. I don't want to be a smith - I build stuff in real life. Heck, I don't even like Bioware's approach of allowing me to buy the best gear. I want to earn it hip deep in the blood of my foes and torn from their cold dead hands....but maybe I'm just dramatic that way. Still, while all games have limits to freedom - I'm not sure you could actually play FONV w/o some sort of combat skill as long as you have one combat skill you can use any mix of other skills you want to win - it seems like the crafting necessity is too high in this game.

Couldn't agree more as I've personally been disappointed by the likes of DA2, Dungeon Seige, FF and recently LOTR War in the North. Skyrim has set the benchmark and it'll be interesting to see if Dragons Dogma, DA3 or any other game that has RPG elements to it live up to the sheer size and scale.

Why do people feel the need to bring up DA2 to prove some kind of point? It just weakens whatever argument you're trying to make.PlumPaul82393 wrote...

What does compare to Skyrim from my own experience is the World of Aenea in NWN1. Both are vast worlds with much to see, but Skyrim has more quests and dragons; less items.

There's a bug with Aela and good bows, according to http://www.uesp.net/...la_the_Huntress
But even Mjoll has this thing. Her first attack is with some bow/arrows that cannot be seen or taken from her inventory. Only when the enemy closes in is that she switches to the Daedric Greatsword that I crafted and enchanted for her, The Sword of the Lioness.

I wonder if this same sort of issue is why Lydia still has the opriginal shield she started with. It isn't in her inventory for me to remove.

Well the role he's playing is whatever you want to call that. Part of roleplaying is that the world reacts to my choices and there are consequences to it which there really aren't in the case of the raft of guilds.

That's a nice theory but given the way the game scales it isn't a terribly realistic one. The curve on difficulty starts to leave you behind until you start working the crafting in some way. I could, again, make the same claim if you wanted to be a warrior and say "Well sucks to be you for chosing to be a two handed warrior. Sure the scaling causes the difficultly curve to spike but hey, that's your choice." Choices in game have consequences (joing the stormcloaks) but choices about character development that are not part of the game world per se should be a lot more neutral if you want to allow and encourage freedom.

Actually, I'd say in this case it's a problem with the game. I love role-play, but what if I want to role-play a character who wants to become head of everything? In Skyrim, the game allows that with absolutely no problems. On the other hand, an interesting aspect of Morrowind was that the game would refuse to promote the player to a certain rank if they had not achieved a certain "level" in their respective skills, an aspect which was lost in Oblivion. I would have preferred to see this concept expanded rather than eliminated in TES.
Require high-level spell-casting for the College of Winterhold, require melee skill in the Companions, so on and so forth.
