I don't know why the limit is three, either, or why they ask me to kill someone I specifically have no interest in killing. I usually get Mjoll the Lioness as a member, and I'm considering Erandur and Jenassa.

Hjerim - the home in Windhelm? I recommend you complete "Blood on Ice" beforehand, if you have any interest in completing that quest. You can purchase it once you've dealt with certain missions as a member of either the Legion or the Stormcloaks.

I recruited Jenassa, Erandur, and that one guy from the bar in Markarth...the one Addai married, with the face tattoo. Vorstag? Something like that. They're a good team, with a warrior, mage, and Jenassa is good with a bow, and dual wielding.

Sounds like a good team. I remember Vorstag, he didn't seem to like going into mines (which makes sense, given he's from Markarth).

I already completed both parts 1 and 2 of Blood on the Ice. I already had the option from the steward to buy the house, but didn't buy it right then, and it doesn't come up as an option anymore. I guess it could be a bug on XBox, but if it isn't...why would you only have one chance to buy a house? Again, silly.

...Although maybe the option to buy showing up was a fluke. Do you have to do the Legion or Stormcloak mission to buy it?

I believe so, because the Jarl provides the option once he declares you can become Thane by becoming a resident, which is typically the case in Holds where the protagonist can purchase a home. You need to complete the Stormcloak quests up to a certain point, or complete the Legion quests entirely before having the option to purchase the home is avaliable.

That is so weird. I've bought all of the other houses without having to side with either the Stormcloaks or Legion. In fact, I haven't done a single quest in that line for either. I wonder why Windhelm is different...?

For Solitude, I just had to do 5 quests for the people, and one FedEx delivery for Elisif, (hmm, maybe one other quest for the steward), and I was good to go.

Ahh, well, I guess I have to make a decision sometime. I just can't decide, because both sides are kinda chumpy. Can I just side with Paarthurnax, and be done with it? I kid. Sort of.

Well, you do have to join the college to get Morokei's mask...

It's a pretty good mask for a mage - regenerating magicka 100% faster.

It's different because Jarl Stormcloak offers it to the Dragonborn if he proves himself a worthy ally of the Stormcloak cause, or it's provided by his successor if the protagonist sides with the Legion. I believe it's the only home that has such a stipulation, because I managed to purchase the home in Solitude without siding with the Legion or the Stormcloaks (where the Legion HQ is).

^ Not to mention that by going to *that* location, you can get the Wooden Mask.

Well, that makes sense, thanks! I just need to decide, and keep things moving.

The houses are a bit buggy.  I'm not getting a Well Rested bonus at any of them- at least no notification pops up, and I'm not sure how to see effects??  Also in Solitude I was locked out of my house when I went out onto the balcony.  Dude!  I paid so much gold for that sea view!!

That's not cool! If you were getting the bonus, you'd get a text notification that you were "rested" or "well rested" (well rested in your owned bed)...unless your character is a werewolf, in which case, you'd get neither bonus anyway.

I'm having issues with the weapon mounts not allowing me to put anything on them in Markarth, but that's it so far.

OMG, have you guys done the Namira quest yet? I did that last night. Eola is a bad, bad girl. And so is my PC. Image IPB

Let me compete with Tolfdir to show why I'm superior to him at Alteration, an activity only a Wizard could do. Let me demonstrate for the Apprenticies how to summon a Storm Atronach, an activity only a Wizard could do. So on and so forth. I want the other guilds to function in a similar manner as well.

The problem is that the College of Winterhold is a Mage School in name only, since there are few (if any) Mage activities required or expected of the player.

Okay.  This sounds incredibly boring to me, but whatever.

I also am not going to have complete roleplay freedom, since I made a character with political ambitions but in the game, at least, she goes nowhere with them.  I can live with it.  This is the adventuring part of her life, when I move on to a different character I can imagine she is rebuilding independent Skyrim.

This. While it's not inherently a bad thing, one would think that progression in rank in say the College, or the Companions would be tied to proficiency at the related skill through demonstration. Rather than just tying it to the plot, or completion of Radiant Quests. They already do this when introducing you to some of the guilds, but they don't run with the idea. Which is such a damn shame.

Why?  As if every university administrator is better at teaching X than the professors at the school?

I simply can't feel sympathetic to complaints about the game letting you do things that you think it ought to forbid you.  Craft your own story or quit complaining.

Unfortunately, it's an element of accessibility and streamlining. A lot of people want to be the Master of Everything and can't or don't want to restrict themselves in what they can accomplish.

That is their problem.

Perfect!

This is a school for magic. Shouldn't we actually have some Mage role-play which revolves around casting spells and doing Mage-esque activities? Tolfdir's wards lesson was a great start. They should have capitalized on that even more.

I simply can't feel sympathetic to complaints about the game letting you do things that you think it ought to forbid you.  Craft your own story or quit complaining.

That's a strawman. It's not about the game allowing restriction or freedom. It's about carving a more effective role-playing experience. I actually want to role-play a Wizard, which requires Wizard-esque activities/abilities. If I'm going to be Arch-Mage, I should have some capability in spell-casting, to preserve the internal consistency of the world. The current TES method revolves around sending the player into dungeons, which any character concept can complete quite handily. That doesn't  promote Mage role-play, or story crafting.

That is their problem.

I'd say it's the developer's problem, as they built the game in that manner.

If you want to be a wizard, be a wizard.  What's stopping you?  If you're working towards being arch-mage and your PC has no interest in magic or reason to be at the college, WTH are you even there for?

I'm roleplaying a Stormcloak officer.  She learned a bit of magic, visits the college occasionally, but she's mostly involved in the civil war.  Didn't want to be a werewolf.  Didn't give the Thieves' Guild the time of day.  I won't finish any of the guild quest lines on this character.  If people are just blindly going after this guild and that guild without thinking about their character's story and if it makes sense, then that IS their problem.

How can someone complain about NOT having devs holding their hands and telling what path they MUST go? It is not a Strawman. You carve your own RP experience the way you see fit! My Nord was about to lose his head. Now he wants to now what is it all about. He'll do every quest for every faction as possible and when it is possible to betray some scum he thinks deserves it, like Eola, he will do it.

I will blame the game only if I am not allowed to do that. I was with that in mind when accepted Maven Black-Briar first mission, in Whiterun but the guy she was targeting was worse than she is so I played along. How long will it last before I invade the place with Mjoll and cut all their heads? Time will tell. So far they've been much more honorable than the guards in Markarth.

Open menu (TAB), Magic (<-) and scroll down to the last one, Current Effects or something like that. It will show everything affecting you, Permanent Bonuses (like Bless of Dibella, Ancient Kniowledge, Sailor's Repose), Buffs (from items, potions, spells, anything), Diseases (which name and effect - that's how I knew my werewolf had contract Sanguinare Vampiris!!!), Poison and Negative Effects. They're all there. I'm always checking it after some particular animals or enemies to see if I contracted anything. It says Immune to Disease there for werewolves but it doesn't work 100%.

I want role-playing concepts. Emergent narrative has limitations which I'd like to see reduced, if not removed completely. One of those is the lack of reactivity in the game world, which Bethesda has been on and off with in providing. If a concept results in a contradiction in role-playing, then yes the devs should be telling me what path to take, since I'm taking an action not consistent with the game world. I joined a Wizard University, ergo there should be some sort of Wizarding expectations. That is reactivity in the game world.

The College of Winterhold is a perfect example. Anyone can complete it, and as a result I am not a Wizard for having finished the quest-line because it did not require any activities expected of a Wizard. Becoming Arch-Mage can be summed up in "Go to this dungeon, kill this guy", which anyone can do. Beyond Tolfdir's lesson, at what point in the College of Winterhold quest-line can it be said that I filled the role of a Wizard?

These dragons are trolling me. They keep showing up right as I am doing quests and proceed to muck up said quest. Escorting a member of the faithful to the Eldergleam? Bam! Dragon shows up and eats him. Sneaking onto an island with specific instructions to burn only three beehives? Screw that noise! Dragon swoops down as soon as I set foot on the island and burns those hives to the ground!

No problem! I always wondered what the wooden mask was for during my first run; it's interesting to read about the different Dragon Priests.

Meeting Eola the first time made for an interesting first impression... especially given her impression about why the protagonist was really there. And I always knew there was something about the "bloodiest beef in all the Reach..."

What stone are you using ?
If it is "The Lover Stone" (all skills +15% faster) then you wont get well-rested bonus.

As did I. I then proceeded to slaughter everyone present at the dinner and feasted. They had no right to protest.

To enter the College of Winterhold you need to be able to cast a Fear spell.

To cast a Fear spell, your magicka skill has to be a certain level...in particular Illusion, I believe.

I think it depends on what spells you have or maybe on magic skill lvl.
I had to cast "Healing Hands" to enter the college

I think it's actually random. On my first playthrough, they had me cast Healing Hands, and on another it was Summon Flame Atronach.

Mage Stone

I get a Well Rested notification from rooms at inns, just not at home.

Okay, I didn't notice that.  I am roleplaying as a Talos worshipper so she goes to his shrine all the time anyway.  People still tell her she looks sick.  Image IPB

I did the same for my first run, although I was an assassin. Image IPB

I pretty much got all the Daedric artifacts for my first run by being a cold s.o.b., too, with my character only contesting what Hiricine demanded because I completed the Companions MQ beforehand. It was interesting to see what became of my Champion. I want my second run to be different - Black Star for my mage, sparing Erandur - although I'm not certain how I'll handle the other tasks my amoral assassin had no problem with. And I notice I did something to get the Dark Brotherhood to send assassin after assassin after me.

But there's got to be something awesome that happens when you get all of them! I can't wait! For those of you who know, please don't spoil it for us!

I mostly just store the masks in a crate in my house, because my Breton is adorable, and I like to see her face.

That's true, it's random because of the radiant A.I. The radiant AI means that a different spell will be demanded from the protagonist, which can vary from "healing other" to summoning a daedra (in the same way that a quest item could be in different locations, depending on the particular playthrough).
