Come on now,  The stats were pretty superficious.
I played for Oblivion awhile, but ask me for any of the stats, attributes, or skills of my character? No clue. All the numbers in Oblivion are so irrelevant to the gameplay that you don't really need to visit that part of the menu.

As i said before, it's not a complex d&d type stat driven game, it's more about throwing into a world, as if
your the one out there actually exploring it.    More of a sim type game.

It's actually a good thing the Elder Scrolls games are moving away from trying to be an RPG. The structure of the
game and the manner in which skills level and such makes for a better action/rpg. It depends too much on player
skill. RPGs should stay turn-based or Rtwp as it removes the player element and makes it far easier to focus on the
character element.

HAHA and I can't for the life of me remember the stats of an of my characters ever... I guess none of them counts as RPGs.
Its all about the stats... i gotta know EXACTLY how much strength my character has at all times or its an action game?
Give a break the Elder Scrolls game is more RPG than most of those turn based crap you gush on about so much.  Is waiting for you're turn really what Roleplaying is about?

What was the ORIGINAL and who is the father of rpgs again ??    Lets not forget the heritage before speaking such blasphemy.

How many times do we see fire and ice spells? It's going to be awesome when I have fire in my left hand and ice in my right.

Ah, together at last

Its great that you got such strong feelings for the roots that you can't see anything else.

I have played many pen-and-paper RPG campaigns in the past, and IMHO, the "RP" part of it has less to do with the old school stats and more to do with the wide open possibilities of being able to develop your character's backstory, personality and go anywhere in the game world and do whatever you want. I find a lot of this aspect in TES games.

There is something about the richly detailed game world of Oblivion that makes it enjoyable to completely ignore the main quest while walking around from settlement to settlement, talking to NPCs and role-playing an entirely customized character with your own imaginary backstory.

I'm... confused.  You had to pay attention to stats and attributes in order to level.  Your birth sign also factored into gameplay.  You could build a custom class and use any skill you wanted (though you wouldn't level as fast if not building your main skills), but to me this is a good feature in that it allows you to build your character as you want.

On a different note... no Dark Brotherhood faction???  Bethesda, I am disappoint.  I hope there is at least DB-ish armor to be had.

Oh, and for those who don't know what VATS is... this is VATS.  You can freeze combat, see enemy health and hit probability, and queue up attacks.  Of course, what VATS really should have been telling me at this point is "forget it, you're ****ed."

Can ice actually freeze someone and not just slow them down? If it does, I will make a blue-garbed rogue with dual wielding ice powers :D

This works exactly the same way, right? You now have complete freedom to change your build midgame without suffering for it and you are free to combine any number of skills as you see fit. The only things I don't like is the removal of the birthsigns. The attribute system in the previous games felt redundant imo and the actual differences that they made has been worked into perks instead. It's a win-win.
If you need numbers to tell you that "you are intelligent" or "you have a lot of strength" then that's your problem ;)

AND FOR GODS SAKE! The Dark Brotherhood HAS been confirmed for like five months. They are just not part of the three MAIN factions that influences how the main quests plays out.

Todd Howard should obviously choose his words more carefully. I was also confused with what he said at first.

I'm not certain, but I don't think that the factions mentioned were the only factions mentioned.

If I was Bethesda, I would announce Dark Brotherhood about two weeks from release date, if indeed it is in. I would be highly surprised if it wasn't, or at least something similar.

I hope Arena is in, too. Hopefully more Colleseum like, too. A real crowd. With the new combat its just too good not to have. Hope we year more on that soon.

It would be epic being in the middle of a round and having a dragon drop in, just wailing molten fire. The focus would shift pretty quick, thou an

Bleh, it's two sides of the coin. You develop your character through personality and how you go through the narrative. That's one side. The other side is that the development is represented through your stats because all of the challenges your character faces ought to be decided by your stats and skills.

Becoming better in certain skills allows you to pass those challenges in a particular way, which helps develop your character from a personality and narrative perspective. Passing Intelligence skill checks fosters roleplaying a smart character, sneaking past enemies develops a stealthy character, fighting enemies in melee developers a strong warrior character and so forth.

There is no roleplaying - the character and roleplaying - the stats. It's two sides of the same coin. One fosters the other.

Now, you layer on top of that a reactive world and narrative that allows for multiple ways to play through with different results and content like the Fallouts (1/2/NV), then you've got gold.

Of course, Bethesda cannot into skill checks, branching narrative or multiple playstyles that doesn't involve killing. So it's really a moot point. I'm just hoping that the gameplay is good and the mechanics are solid. I'm not really looking for a traditional open world RPG that contains more RPG depth than New Vegas or Morrowind, I'm just looking for a great open world sandbox Action RPG and I think Skyrim will deliver big time.

As for the redesigned character system, I can see why people would think it's dumbing down. But it's too early to really judge it and it may well be a massive improvement, especially when you consider how broken the old system was.

I just hope the Dark Brotherhood doesn't have that juvenile, stupid evil approach like in Oblivion.

Also, the religious factions should be back. This is Skyrim, and the Nordic pantheon are precursors to the Nine Divines. So that means cults of Shor, Kyne, Jhunal, Dibella, Stuhn, Tsun, Mara and Orkey should be dominant over their Cyrodilic counterparts.

Sorry about that caps lock. I have spent the whole week reassuring confused people on Bethesda's forum that they will be in the game so I might be a bit tense :P

One of the quests you get in the Dark Brotherhood is the most well-written quest in the game, perhaps in any RPG I have ever played.

It's my favorite quest line in Oblivion and one of my favourite all time RPG quest lines. Love it.

I think you're talking about the last quest for the faction. Not sure though.

My all time favorite was the "Who Done It?" Quest. What better quest for an assassin then the plot of "And Then There Were None" with you as the killer!

Heresy! You are supposed to talk to them all and play them out against each other. The result can be quite hilarious :D

Off you go! Play the quest again!
