Torryg thought Skyrim's independence but has never wanted to, why ?

1 - The resources of the Empire to Skyrim are essential. The Empire Need Skyrim to win against the Thalmor, but Skyrim need the resources of Empire to live easily and especially to remain simply strong. So a war to win against the Thalmor alone is laughable. They would be forced to invade The Empire, to steal some resources to survive on the scale of a devastating war with Thalmors..

2 - Skyrim and empire disunited, impossible to beat the Thalmor. Skyrim without the empire has no chance of winning, can simply resist. But to resist is stupid if it just gives devastation on its land. A strike force lost does not return to life miraculously as some might think. Skyrim has already lost many people, resources, no more trade, totally weak. The goal is to destroy a threat, not just to fight it, because that's cool.

What will do the nords excited like fleas and wild ? immediately kill the spies and agents of Thalmors? Already a threat of war on the horizon and not even recovered from the wound of civil war. With Ulfric as king, no chance Skyrim is smart enough to wait a good time.

3 - The Empire is the result of a Nord, it's stupid to reject what the Nords themselves have founded and conquered in the past. Thalmor are a threat to all humans.

______

And those who say that Thalmors can do whatever they want in the empire, are wrong. The "imperial legion may require thalmor to leave immediately the country ( Thorald Greyman ) if necessarily, and they would be forced to obey.

And the empire under current leadership wasn't able to win before when it was strong, so I don't see how an empire actively working with the Thalmor is going to do any better.

I played Skyrim more as a romantic than a realist. Better to die fighting for freedom than to live in peace as a slave.

I like to play as a romantic too... ( romantic but not dumb ) But your sentence doesn't mean anything in the context of Skyrim. No one plans to live as a slave, and certainly not the Empire. They are already preparing for the next war. There is simply a difference in strategy. ( Well actually, Nords don't have strategy, they just want to fight )

The Nords want to fight right now, are not willing to compromise their faith despite their current weakness against the thalmors.

The Empire is ready to sacrifice its faith during a period, to regain strength and be in a better position to win. Its goal is only turned to the Thalmors ,its goal is to beat the thalmors. As stated by a nord in the Imperial Legion, Ulfric and the Stormcloaks away the empire of its real goal.

I just finished up the Dark Brotherhood questline over the weekend, and WOW, it blew me away! I'm pretty happy to say that I let Cicero live, because I find him to be absolutely hilarious. He annoyed me a bit at first, but now, when he gives me the excited, "let's kill someone!!!" line, it just cracks me up.

My husband did not make that choice, and watched me play for a bit; he said he was sad that he didn't let him live. This, as he's running around in Cicero's jester shirt in his playthrough.

I haven't taken him out in the wild yet; do any of you guys know how he is in combat?

Edit: Oh, and p.s., I saw my first backward-flying dragon last night. It took about 40 play hours after I installed the patch to see it happen, but there it was, in all its sadness. /tear

That "betrayal" in the Dark Brotherhood didn't make a lick of sense. Making a deal with a guy whose son you murdered... the entire questline was far inferior to Oblivion's, with the lack of characters on par with Lucien Lachance and lack of focus on quests involving ingenious ways of killing people.

Yeah, the whole thing felt a little short. I liked the wedding and going after the Emperor but there wasn't anything that topped Oblivion's Whodunit? Dark Brotherhood quest. That one has to be one of my favorite RPG quests ever.

Gah, I found him terribly annoying. But you don't mess with my Dark Brotherhood bro's. That was his death sentence right there.

I did find it cool to see him show up again though after I initially found him along the side of the road at the beginning of the game with his wagon with the Night Mother broken. I wonder if its possible to kill him then?

Yeah, I did struggle with making that decision, but in the end, it didn't matter anyway. You just have to hear him say, "let's kill someone!", just once, for everything to be right with the world.

I never did see him with his wagon, sadly. Not sure if you can kill him then.

I'm slightly embarassed to admit that I never played the DB in Oblivion. My characters were just too "good" for murder and all that, I guess. That, and I wouldn't have been able to wear my Crusader armor anymore, since you had to be squeaky clean. I don't know why I liked that stuff so much.

I also play the noble chatacter as a rule, and still plan to do so with my next PC. But the freedom of being able to meld various choices in Skyrim is quite fulfilling.

My DB leader is one to play with some manner of ethics. While I accepted the mantle of leadership, it is my plan to reform the group to have more of the old restrictions and code; no torture chamber is a decent start. And when encountering the Evil pantheon, I try to foil certain plans when possible. Currently, I know a certain Abandoned home will never see another visitor, and plan to kill the one which was supposed to be invited. And while I may attend a certain disgusting feast, my intent is to kill any guests, or simply re-load and pass on the invitation completely.

And as far as possible, I am attempting to remain neutral in politics. For example, if it had been possible, the Emporer would have lived after our personal discussion, but we cannot always get what we want. So now I plan to kill Ulfric, too. This may not be the best thing for the country, but it appears to level the field.

Are you kidding? The empire had kicked ulfrics ass in quick order (well actually tulius did after fighting went on long enough) and were about to execute him. The only reason the empire was having so much trouble during the course of the game was because of the dragons! The stormcloaks had to use guerilla warfare to even stand a chance.

Only when the dragonborn came about did the stormcloaks even had a chance.

(sorry I am catching up on the backlog, no more I promise!)

The Empire wasn't kicking Ulfric's arse, they were in a stalemate. Neither side had the advantage and the only reason Ulfric was about to get exectuted was because they ambushed him and his personal guard while they were alone.

Alright, so I just completed all the guilds (on multiple chars) and here is my ranking on each, according to how well written / made they are. NO SPOILERS, I promise.

1. Dark Brotherhood
2. Thieves Guild.
3. College of Winterhold
4. Companions

I felt the DB story arc and gameplay was the best; it was very fun and written well.

The companions, on the other hand, was very bland and ****-tastic. I did not feel connected to the main story line, and it felt EXTREMELY short.

The mages guild had a good story arc going, but I felt they did not do much with it, basically, it was over too soon.

Overall, I felt that all the guild quests were very short. Again, this is my opinion after completing them all, I still have the Main quest and Civil war stuff to do, let me know what you think of the guilds! AND NO SPOILERS!!!

Sadly, the Civil War questline is incredibly short. They were fun, but short and a bit repetitive. I was quite disappointed with them.

@MarchWaltz - For the most part, I'd rank them the same as you did. I just added this to another thread, so I'll re-post here:

The Thieves Guild was the longest, it seemed, to me. The quest line is not over once you finish Darkness Returns.

If you want to be Guildmaster, you have to do 5 jobs in each hold, plus a special job in each hold, plus an extra job for Tonilia, which means 25 jobs PAST Darkness Returns. I missed that initially, and wondered why it felt unfinished. They don't exactly hold your hand and explain that, but it's all part of returning the TG to its former glory.

TBH, those extra jobs made the whole thing kind of drag on for me, because the holds each job was given in were random, so you kind of had to keep track of how many you'd done in each hold, and turn down the jobs in holds you'd already completed.

For the Nightingale armor (and the Guildmaster armor), though, it was competely worth it. I also dug the Dark Brotherhood quest line, but it was a little shorter than I expected.

I'd add that my favorites were the DB and TG, and it was fun that they intersected a bit.

Agreed, although Shadowmere does kinda of make up for it. That shrouded armor is pretty hideous. Image IPB

Did you get that quest where you had to find the "assassin of old"? He had on an ancient version of the armor, but it looked pretty similar.

Was it not exactly the same, save for a slight change in the cowl? I would be happy if we got something like the Black Hand Robes from Oblivion

^ Yep, and I think the enchantments may have been a little different as well.

I also picked up Linwe's Armor in a TG quest, which is pretty similar to their standard armor, but sleeveless.

While we're on armour, has anyone else had their head disappear when wearing the Morokei mask?

Can I create my own staffs, just like I can create weapons? Or am I limited to the staffs I can find?

I don't think you can create your own. Can anyone confirm?

On a different topic, I just read that you can disenchant Linwe's armor for Shadowstrike and Shadowstrength. Has anyone done that?

I doubt I'll ever play Oblivion again after this. It's inferior to Skyrim in just about every way IMHO (and is inferior to Morrowind in some aspects as well).

Looking forward to whatever expansions Bethesda is working on - if the inclusion of most of Tamriel in Skyrim is any indication, it's gonna be big. :o

You can't.  I guess Carpentery didn't make it into the final cut   Don't know why they didn't let you make staves and let you enchant them.  I guess they figured you'd find a staff with the effects you wanted eventually.

I'm not sure of an "official" reason why cheese is such a big deal, but I always related it to Sheogorath from Shivering Isles (and the fact that cheese wheels are absolutely everywhere).

Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that! Cheese for no one! Image IPB

Isn't that the TES way? I believe you start off as a prisoner in every game in the series. Considering what number we're on (5), I doubt they'll change that any time soon.
