Do any of you get a random event where you're attacked by Hired Thugs? My Bosmer is getting them at level 5 and dammitall, I can't beat them. I keep dying over and over and over, and they killed Uthgerd the Unbroken.
My PC is just too squishy to beat them. I take it that this is bad karma for her stealing.
I think followers can only be killed by the protagonist, otherwise they kneel down and slowly regenerate their health if the enemies deletes it in combat - I discovered this when I saw that enemies couldn't kill my followers, and I accidently killed Aela the Huntress on my first run as an assassin (which is why I avoid the dog companions now - as nice as it is to have a dog faithfully at your side, the dog tends to run right in front of my mage using magical attacks on enemies).
I haven't gotten any hired thugs so far. During my recent run, I get attacked by the Dark Brotherhood assassins instead of hired thugs (unless it's the Thalmor trying to kill me for "disrupting" their plans), even for actions that got my assassin hired thugs originally (which I suspect is because my mage isn't a member of the Dark Brotherhood like my assassin was). I would suggest using the water to escape when your health is low or going to the elevated hills and mountains to attack some enemies from a distance when the antagonists try to surround you. This saved my life on early levels when a cave bear or a sabre cat tried to maul me.

When he dies he gains all the knowledge of what is going on in skyrim and regrets sowing the conflict that allowed the dragon to be revived. As he is saying this both imperial AND stormcloak soldiers that are trapped just outside of sovenguard (alduin is eating their very souls before they can reach it).
That's Ulfric's pespective and it's very sad he dies with guilt like that, but the prophecy suggests that it was the banning of Talos that precipitated the dragons coming. The Thalmor didn't know they were doing that- they were only waiting for Aur-Iniel- but unwittingly they did.
I'm also not surprised that Ulfric is a mournful ghost. He seems to carry guilt for leaving the Greybeards when you talk to him about that. People who say he's just a racist pig don't understand the character.
I've done both the Stormcloak and Legion MQ, and while my Dunmer leans more towards the Legion outcome for the Holds, I thought Ulfric was an interesting and developed character. I never saw him as a villain, certainly not some one-dimensional caricature. Despite my inclination for Brunwulf Free-Winter for Windhelm, I thought Ulfric's focus on aiding Nords had more to do with his "rise to power" to be the new High King than it did with anything else.

I'm not sure why some people dislike Ulfric so much - whenever I speak to him, he's usually a calm, reasonable fellow (he does have a bit of a temper, but that's hardly a reason to hate him).
Characters strike people a certain way, it's not always logical. He's got a lot of grey to him. Some people also take the Thalmor dossier on him and The Bear of Markarth at face value.
Doesn't the Dossier read that the Thalmor tried to trick Ulfric into thinking their torture of him lead to a victory for their side, and that he refused to abide by their orders when they tried to control his rebellion? I didn't get the feeling that the dossier was damning since it seemed like Ulfric wasn't really under their thumb - he was clearly going to do what he wanted to do, and even his desire for Skyrim to be independent was respected by High King Torygg.
