you can easily level your smithing to 100 ein 15 min with making iron dagger. Just buy all irons bars/ores and some leather for a few days.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not too worried about it. It'll get there soon enough.

Though I also have an abundance of money, from selling my stuff I've smithed! I've got the houses in Whiterun and in Solitude, both completely furnished, and I have 26,000 gold. Not sure what to do with it.

To bring this 'round to back on-topic, I have two questions for anyone who can tell me the answer.

First, does anyone know where those Dragon Priests are? Or are they Main Quest related? I've been to three of the dragon places (that are marked on the map) and none since Shearpoint have had a Dragon Priest.

Number two's a little more complicated:

I was doing the quest for one of the guilds, can't remember who, but I was sneaking up on a standalone tower that was connected by a bridge to a nearby cliff (not totally a cliff, but that idea). I had just shot one of the people on the bridge, and they were all in a tizzy, when suddenly I see fighting below near the base of the tower (I'm on the cliff, next to the bridge). Then, this guy runs up to me, hands me his "Hide Bracers of Major Sure Grip," and says "keep them for me. If you don't i'll find you and hurt you/kill you/something like that."

I haven't heard from him since, but I've kept them in my inventory just in case he came back around. Anyone know what this is?

1. Dragon Priest are located all over Skyrim not just in the Main Quest, Valthume, Ragnvald, Labyrinthian, Volskygge, Shalidors' maze and more have a priest.
2.That is a random encounter and you almost always are approached by a hunter who owns the item handed to you by the convict.

Since we are into comparing different games...

BioWare has been concentrating too much on character interaction to the detriment of game world believability, IMO. Even with depth in character interaction, their latest medieval fantasy was too shallow and over the top for me.

Skyrim's world on the other hand is this fantastic place with incredible detail and depth. And look at the sales numbers. Bethesda is on to something here and hopefully BioWare will take a hint. Not so much with a complete open experience but to take better care in detail and interaction of what they show us of their world.

I don't want every character in Bioware games to be cardboard cutout with one line of dialog. Really, you'd trade Bioware companions for Skyrim's "companions"?

The ones with the daddy & mommy issues, sure.

2. He never approached me, and that was like twenty hours ago at least, lol. I guess I can get rid of them now.

Ah. Yes. The fantastic NPCs of DA. Remember these? The guys in Denerim near the port of the Alienage who were gossiping were only able to do just that. They did nothing else but that. They just stood there talking and didn't move an inch. And after they finished their lines they just stood there silently and acted like they were talking and making gestures. How about the guys on the square in front of Orzammar? Did you see them do anything else? Did they move? And to make it even more immersive, did you notice that those gossipers in Orzammar were not dwarfs, but exactly the same guys, doing the same gossip, as the ones in Denerim?

Guess I was too busy with the more important NPC's to notice or care; same with Skyrim.

I do not bother discussing or listening to everyone met in the streets, or grant a conversation with the same complaining Nord outside the local shop. Without subtitles, many of these locals are simply ignored in order to finish shopping, questing, etc.; especially bad when conversations overlap.

And who does not want to shoot the Talos fanatic in Whiterun?

I prefer quality over quantity.

But as a hardcore DA fan, it's so shallow... I think if I'd never played DA it might have at least been less glaring. So I got as much out of it as I wanted (and at 180-odd hours made it well worth the money) but there's no real impetuous to revisit it.

Overall: 8/10.

When some  'hardcore'  DA fans claim Skyrim is "so shallow", I can never understand what they mean. There are 5 different types of Butterflies in this game for gods sake....

Perhaps what these people are trying to say is that companions and companion interaction in Skyrim is shallow compared to DA. And while this is true, it's a completely DIFFERENT claim.

To clarify, I refer to the shallowness of the populace (and therefore any real emotional involvement) - pretty much across the board. None of the NPCs made me feel strongly one way or the other. You're limited in how much you can interact with anyone. The "depth" as you point out is in the variety of the world, not the people in it.

And that's why it feels a bit jarring for me to play a game which invested so much effort in crafting this world and so little in bringing it to "life". Again, if I hadn't played DA before, I probably wouldn't have the same expectations.

One could easily turn that on its head: what's the point of putting so much effort in crafting such developed companions in a dead and empty world as in a BioWare game?

^ Yes, I believe so. This was discussed extensively quite a few pages back, but I don't remember precisely what the answer was.

Yes daggers are one handed since you can wield them in one hand.

Yes One handed skill apply to daggers but...

Sword tree in one handed doesn't apply to daggers...
fortify one-handed enchantment/potion effect doesn't apply - you can't raise damage of dagger with items/potions.

Bladesman ?
It doesn't.

Bladesman (3)
One-Handed 30, Armsman
Attacks with swords have a 10% chance of doing critical damage (+5% per additional rank, does not apply to daggers)

http://elderscrolls....wiki/One-Handed

From direct testing by playing a thief for 40 levels of gameplay or so:
bladesman (the perk that gives a critical chance with swords) does not apply to daggers, as never did the Critical Hit message appear - though it does occasionally appear when I switch to a sword.

+ I' ve tested it thoroughly myself

No idea, maybe your game is bugged.

My thoughts exactly. I achieved 100 Smithing between slaying my first dragon and reaching Windhelm to join the Stormcloaks - and had a full suit of Ebony armor not ten minutes after that.

It doesn't help much if you don't train also your combat skills! The hard way so you can put up with the guilty feeling of raising smithing too fast!

  I'm at level 36 and have just gotten to 70 smithing, on a character that does a fair bit of it.  But I don't sit and spam daggers.  I pick up ore and smelt then smith when she happens to be in town, mostly to sell and more occasionally to enchant and upgrade our equipment as the older stuff is getting stale.  Can't say it enough- this game works best when you play it naturally.  Half of Bethsoft forum is useless because it's all "I sat and repeated the same action for hours and now THE GAME IS BROKEN!!1!"

On worlds:  Star Wars?  LOL  I certainly hope that the games have better writing than the movies.  Still a boring universe to me.  The only space game I'd play with real relish would be a good Dune RPG.

You're so right. I only reached 100 Smithing now at level 40 with the new char. I've been spending the perks as per the first char's built but in a very different order, like enchanting and speech from lower char levels, as well as the combat ones. This time I didn't have 5-6 Perks stocked awaiting the skill level to spend. I've just played it naturally and it is more satisfying to me.

Star Wars is really only good for one type of game, imho. Flight combat simulation. I've had such a great time playing other human pilots in X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and then X-Wing Alliance (which had a kicking ass campaign too since it explained a lot of things that happened between Episodes 5 and 6).  Other than that, returning in time some 1,000 or more years is stretching what a good story had and turning it into a "let's suck the fans dry" MMO.

LOL!  Gonna be doing that on my next playthrough.

Anyway, w/ regards to leveling your skills 'naturally" a good rule of thumb that I developed is to form yourself a 'work schedule".  Something like this:

1) Establish a home base  (I use Whiterun for simple convenience)
2)  Go exploring for a few days and perhaps  clear out a couple of dungeons then return to home base
3)  Then spend a couple of days at home base making potions; blacksmithing, enchanting, selling (for speech).  You don't have to do the million-dagger-crafting thing.  Just do enough to  equip yourself with better gear and  to get to your next  level up
4) repeat steps 2-3.

Just a couple of thoughts on Skyrim now that I’m now well into the game.

1.       Dark Brotherhood quest line with regards to Astrid.  First It’s a shame you can’t marry her as I would have loved my toon to be able to.  Second the path the quest line takes you with regard to what eventually happens to her was not to my liking as it felt l had no control over the events i.e. stop it happening.   I criticised Bioware for not letting me as a player determine the outcome of the quest All That Remains so maybe in fairness I should criticise Bethesda for the same thing.

2.       How so much in Skyrim is not as Black and White as it seems.  When I first started playing I was so sure with taking the Stormcloaks side against the Imperial, but during my playthrough of the Thief Guild quests you learn a bit about the history of the Falmers and how they came to be what they are and the part the Nords played in it and when I’m in Windhelm and see how the Elf’s are treated my view on the Nords has started to change.  I’ll probably still support them in the civil war quests.

3.       Maybe it’s just me but I’m finding the random Dragon attacks becoming more and more a nuisance as I find myself trying to do a quest for instance in Dawnstar doing a Dark Brotherhood quest and then look 2 Dragons attacking Dawnstar and I sigh as I would rather have been carrying on doing my quests than stopping having to fight the Dragons.  Maybe it’s just my luck that they always seem to appear at the wrong times .

Add to that experimenting with different Stones other than The Lover and The Warrior/Mage/Thief that increases skill faster. It's already too fast to gain level without the stones. I used mostly the Lady (25% faster Health/Stamina regen) and just found the Lord Stone which I activated and will be keeping it on, probably for a long while. (damage and magic resistance).

I'm heading South East from Ivarstead towards Avanchnzel to return this Argonian woman's Lexicon there and I see on the map that on the way to Avanchnzel, there is the location to find the Arch Mage Shalidor's Writings for the Orc in the College Library.

I say to myself, "coolies, I'll just get make a run through of the place on my way there. My character's the mother****ing Harbinger and the only thing she will be heralding is Death and Destruction. May Arkay look upon these poor defenceless fools with mercy and take them to Sovngarde when the inevitable happens."

Image IPB

"Oh hey wow... that's umm... really well fortified. But no worries, I'll make a break for the front gate while Aela covers for me."

Image IPB

FFFFFUUUUUUUUU-

I try to take them out via ranged means, but my Archery is mediocre at best and the the Fort is too well barricaded for pure magic unless I start potion spamming. Plus, some of them hit really hard. I think I took down two bandits from a Dual Cast Fireball, then nearly got one shotted by one of the Bandit Archers who took a Dual Casted Fireball and a single handed Fireball and seemed to still be okay (level scaling?).

Considering I couldn't even get the gate open, I decided it wasn't worth it and made a tactical withdrawal (I iz coward), using the water and a formation of rocks as cover.

Image IPB

But I wasn't about to let the indignity slide. My War Cleric may not be a vicious or evil character (albeit a utilitarian), but she's got an ego to match her ability. She's the Harbinger of the Companions, the Dragonborn and a Thane in just about every single Hold. These bandits and cheap ****ers who couldn't even afford proper clothes and armor wouldn't get the best of her!

There was was a slope and mountainous terrain to the right of the Fortress, with a steep descent leading into the Keep's rear.

Time to lead off to the side and do some rock climbing aka bunny hopping, awww yeaahhh.

But before I do that, I spot a camp nearby. A campfire, a tent and some sleeping bags, along with a few bandits I guess. Time to vent some frustrati-

Image IPB

He then proceeds to tell me his story of how it's his keep, how his family was kidnapped and how held the bandits holding the Keep were hired by one of his rivals. He then says there's a reward for aiding him! Cha-Ching.

Revenge on Bandits for bruising my War Cleric's ego? Check.
Getting Shalidor's Writings for the grumpy Orc dude in the College? Check.
Picking up a reward for helping a nobleman reclaim his home and family? Check.

So now I'm about sneak into the Fort through the mine back entrance. So much for clearing Avanchnzel. Maybe tomorrow (ingame) after some loot dumping and rest...

But it's things like this which make Skyrim so enjoyable for me. How well crafted the world is and how well the mechanics tie into it.

The potential for literally hundreds of small adventures that are given much of it's narrative depth and enjoyment through the player's own involvement via exploration or other means.

Because it's the player who provides the context for the small, often randomized adventures. Something that very few scripted narratives are able to capture well.
