Well I'm loving this game, playing at 1680x1050 and the graphics are pretty damn good. But I have the same two complaints I've had of all Bethesda games: voice acting and combat animations. Both are better than Oblivion, but still they fall a bit flat.
Yeah voice acting there isn't much you can do with, but combat varies depending on how you play. I started out one hand magic and one hand sword and that got old. But sword and shield is pretty fun with blocking, especially if you put some perks in Block. Same goes for stuff like Archery or playing stealthy with Sneak. While the classless system lets you dabble in a little bit of everything, its more fun when you sort of focus on at least one with the perks.
Started out the same way Brock: one hand flames and one hand war axe. One handed magic became just sort of a passing fad for me. I enjoy the warrior skills and default to that normally. But Skyrim did enticed me to play with magic a bit. That's yet another reason to love Skyrim; you aren't railroaded into any skill set, and have the freedom to do, and level whatever skills you want. I enjoyed being able to dabble in things I don't normally play, and then discard them when my curiosity is satisfied, in favor of my preferences...and after all that you still get your shouts to experiment and play with.
Had to retire the flamethrower though, I just enjoy the shield too much, and in Skyrim it is a blast. The Deadly Bash perk (x5 damage), is stupidly overpowered. Like I said earlier, stunning Dragons and Centurions, just seems so bizarre when I compare my PC now (level 37) to his meager abilities at level 8. Killing someone outright with a shield bash is immensely gratifying. With Elemental Protection I'm finally able to neutralize and close the gap against those infuriating high level mages and necromages and their insane fire and cold damage.
Now that I have archery where I want it (2nd level of Steady Hand perk), I'm pretty much just axe and shield now, and am bashing my way through just about every fight, and letting bad guys wail on me a little more, to level it up to 100 so I can get Shield Charge. Seems the right thing for a Nord.
I was worried shield combat was going to suck like it did in Oblivion, but Bethesda did not disappoint this time around.
