Has anyone here done the Rescue Mission for the Companions? I'm supposed to rescue a guy named Elrindir that has been kidnapped in a Vampire cave. But everytime I come to the cave, and kill all the enemies, he starts attacking me, even though I haven't attacked him myself. Is this a bug of some sort?

Simply use a Calm spell for him to stop attacking you. You can buy the spell book from most mages that sells books.

It worked! Thx, Chewin :D

Silly question - have any of you guys messed around with the Atronach Forge below the Mage's college in Winterhold (in the Midden)?

I have a forge recipe, and I know the forge is there, but I haven't used it, and it's been a while since I've been down there. Does using it just yield an Atronach scroll?

I have a recipe, too. But I haven't used it to find out what it does exactly. I assumed it was to summon one up so you can put a soul trap on it and kill it to fill your soul gems. That way you wouldn't have to go to different areas over and over.

BTW, is it possible to put a spell onto paper for a spell scroll? If so, how? I been collecting paper but have yet discovered how to make them.

There are various recipes. You can in fact summon Daedric armour and weapons there.

How are players new to TES enjoying the game? What are your thoughts on your first TES experience?

For myself, it is the strongest PnP like experience I have seen in a solo game.

The World of Aenea PW for NWN1 is like this, but it has an active DM/ designer to assist in the experience, as well as other players. Same for the 5 yr Campaign I was able to participate in with a few others.

But where a DM is missing, Skyrim has several User Friendly systems in which the Player may choose to use or not; based on the depth of realism the Player wishes to achieve. Resting, Food and Cooking, Marriage, Crafting, etc are all possible additions to the game, but none are needed to play the game.

Rather than pick nits with those things I don't care for personally, I instead will praise a few unexpected delights:

* Swimming and Jumping - adds a great deal to exploration, as well as loot. I especially enjoy when I discover a back entrance or possible solution to a problem. Once I discovered a way to actually gain a Shout and avoid the entire dungeon, but I reloaded for that one in order for completion.

* Quick 3rd to 1st person camera views - While I prefer 3rd person as a rule, the 1st person view is handy for sniping, and sorting thru crowded containers. And it somewhat fun to catch myself actually ducking on this end of the keyboard occasionally when I may have been spotted in Stealth mode using either method.

* Player controlled storylines - While not always possible, it is entertaining to make up my own solutions. For instance, recently after attending a dinner in which I met a few undesirables, I bumped into one of the other guests at another function some time later. They did not remember me, but I recalled their attitude with great clarity, and chose to remove them from the game. Sometimes such NPC's may be marked Immortal, but not always, and thus far the game world I am playing in is a better place without their interference.

* Simple Solutions - Throw Your Voice is an occasionally pleasing Shout in order to create a distraction, but it is relatively a costly one. And while I cannot figure out how to toss a tankard or empty bottle across a room, I am able to fire an arrow to gain a sim effect and lure a waiting guard into my sites for another volley.

Or after Fast Travel, and a dragon appears soon therefater, save the cost in time and reputation by allowing my next marked assignment to play hero, and die valiently along with the Dragonjborn in saving their city. OK; perhaps they did not want to be a hero, but by sticking close to them during battle often yields casulaties.

Overall, I love the variety of options.

After enjoying (and coming to love)
this game the minute since I installed it, I finally come to the
conclusion that I am disappointed in the quests' results. It seems
nothing as an affect on the game world no matter what you do.

I actually found this aspect very hit or miss with Skyrim. Sometimes there are glaring ones where you go "wtf react to my actions dammit!" then there are other times where you go "oh cool, that actually happened because of X or Y". For the most part though, even the ones that are acknowledged seem to be mostly small scale stuff, which is fine but I wish it'd be more consistent, especially with quests with the bigger factions/guilds and Daedra.

Like in the Diplomatic Immunity quest, Jarl Ravencrone recognised me and agreed to help me because I was a Thane of her hold. Or the time when I was sent to Cidhe Mine. I got out by killing the Forsworn leader and afterwards everyone was talking about how the Guards were insane to arrest me in the first place (I'm a Thane in Markrath). That was a nice touch and the game is filled with small stuff like that.

It's a massive improvement over Oblivion which had almost none (outside of bark chatter), but still plenty of room for improvement since many of the bigger questlines don't really run with it. Like I've finished the Companion questline and the entire thing's basically been self contained. Would be nice if I could namedrop myself a bit more in conversation (Persuade or Intimidate checks).

The "Help people in Hold" questlines are actually a good way to structure limited reaction and world consequences. Where helping x amount of people gets you closer to Thane status and Jarl's approval.

What would be ideal imo is if there were a counter for failing quests and harming people (killing quest givers, siding against certain NPCs, get caught for stealing, etc) to counter balance the "Help people" tally and racking up enough points got you booted out of the city with a permanent Bounty on your head, meaning you'd have to sneak/invis pot your way around or just don't visit the city altogether. Then, you'd have NPCs in other cities have ambient dialog reflecting that.

That would've been beyond awesome imo.

I think Bethesda could learn from Obsidian in how setup noticeable consequences for actions and quests. Games like New Vegas and Alpha Protocol gave off the impression that everything you did had consequences, minor or not.

Pretty much, lol.

[Spoilers] I got the "Blood on Ice" quest, and got the strange amulet from that house. I completed the quest before I sold the stupid amulet back to Calixo or whatever his name is. Now I can't sell it back to him and this amulet is stuck in my inventory. Anyone know how to resolve this?

I went to the UESP and I know I shouldn't be done with this quest, but nothing happens no matter how long I wait. The quest is also finished in my quest journal. Does anyone know how to get rid of the amulet or properly finish the quest?

If you're on the PC and finished the quest, use the console to remove the Strange Amulet and give yourself the Necromancer Amulet.

I'm glad I have no interest in powergaming. It sounds very dull and stressful.

Indeed it is, but it is kinda necessary on Master difficulty to overcome the cheat mode, considering enemies do 200% damage and you only do 50% damage to enemies.

Plus it is fun! It's a quest that will take a long time to complete! Without using the console to give you the items like soul gems and stuff.  My first char was lvl 49 when I got the final enchanting perk. He had Two handed, Heavy Armor, Smithing and Speech at 100. Then enchanting at 100 as well. Dual enchantment on equipement rocks! But he had zero Alchemy. I recreated him at level 60, after 220 hours.

This new char is at level 46, 90 hours into the game and just now I got Enchanting at 100. and enchanted some real awesome items! Two handed at 93, Heavy Armor at 90, Smithing at 100 and Alchemy at 60. It is more than enough to produce some really cool items, stats wise. It's really not necessary to go all the way for the maximum stats.

I still have the Strange Amulet hanging around, too. Annoying.

Question on alchemy- I am learning its joys on my assassin character- but it seems that reading recipes does nothing, right? I would think it would teach you how to make that potion, but it doesn't.

I was confused by this as well. Apparently we are supposed to read the recipe and then remember it if we want to use it. Too bad it doesn't auto-update your known alchemical effects list.

Anyone else wish there was the option to give Delphine and Esbern the finger?

I mean...they want me to side against the Grey Beards...and the coolest dragon short of Smaug....or they will refuse to help me anymore.

Okay...what have you done for me Blades, can you name really anything you did to help me. NO nothing I helped you and now you make demands of me, ****** off and rot in your temple for all I care.

They Grey Beards and Paarthurnax were far more helpful then you and P. helped me battle Alduin...so yeah siding with the HELPFUL people here.

Hopefully the history books say "and thus the last of the blades sat on their ass doing nothing while the Dragonborn saved the world"

Man to go from having people like Jauffre and Caius Cossades to those two clowns....so sad.

I also want to tell Delphine and Esbern to bugger off. I mean, okay, we had similar interests for a while, but no way I am killing my mentor.

So the recipes are useless- it doesn't help to know what ingredients are needed if you don't have the potion available in your menu.

I went to the Greybeards during the main quest line and forget about the Blades until later.  Then they asked to me to, well you know, and my reaction was - <_<

I reloaded my previous save and have ignored them ever since.

Ok, this is a great game no argument about that. But, it is no where NEAR as great as people are claiming. Due to the one thing all Bethesda games suffer from, game/quest breaking bugs.

I can't believe all the good reviews this game has received, staggering. The reviewers obviously did not give it more than a couple hours, or if they did had a perfect copy. Within ten hours of gameplay I had three broken quests and a few items in my inventory I could not drop due to the questline thinking I hadn't completed it, even though I had. I even have quests carried over into OTHER quests and now they are bugged. For instance I can't complete the Thieves Guild missions because Karliah is stuck at the Winterhold inn. Because of this, I cannot but upgrades to the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary in Dawnstar because Delvin is bugged at the Ragged Flagon thinking Karliah is there, when she is bugged at Winterhold. After twenty hours, my quest list is completely cluttered with quests I cannot complete with around thirty pounds of crap in my inventory.

How about a cancel or reset quest option, Bethesda? Or would that be too "game-breaking", because I can say with all certainty that this game is already broken to the utmost degree. And you know who's fault it is that Bethesda keeps shelling out bugged games? Us, the gamers. Because we tend to just pass by these buggs, being calmed by Bethesda's ridiculous excuse that Skyrim is a "big game" and "bugs are going to happen. That's some malarkey right there, because there are games much, much larger than Skyrim that have been released with absolutely no game breaking bugs. To name a few games that are as large or larger than Skyrim, that are well produced and tested...Mass Effect 1 & 2, Just Cause, Just Cause 2, Baulders Gate 1, 2 & 3, Dragon Age Origins, the list can go on and on. Because most reviewers and gamers take Bethesda's ridiculous excuse to heart, or worse coin the glitches as "cute" or "making the game ever better" Bethesda will keep producing buggy and glitches games, because they know they can get away with minimal effort.

Until they patch Skyrim considerably, there is absolutely no reason at all to nominate this for GOTY. And before someone comes in here and says "Well I haven't experienced any glitches so the game is fine." just remember that a product should work for ALL users and customers, not just some or most. If I am paying a premium of $60 for a game, I expect it to work. Some bugs and glitches are unavoidable, but game breaking or potentially game ruining ones are not acceptable, ever, at least not for a $60 product.

Ugh... too much damn junk in my inventory and house chests, and not enough merchants to get rid of it all without quick traveling everywhere and waiting all the damn time.

Please tell me there's a mudcrab merchant or something in this game - because it's getting pretty ridiculous. >:(

No, recipes work alright. You won't have that potion in your list. You have to select Ingredients instead of a potion name. Select the two ingredients on the recipe and you'll have "Potion of Unkown Effect". Creat it and it will "discover  the properties of those ingredients and then that potion will appear on your list or, if you have that potion in your list with other ingredients, the new ingredients with the same effect will also appear on that particvular potion in your list.

That's how you discover new potions anyway. Select two ingredients randomly and mix them. Potion of Unknow Effect will become Potion Creation Failed, if no matching properties are discovered, or if your lucky and both ingredients have the same property, you'll learn a new potion.

If you have the investor perk, Lucan Valerius in Riverwood has ten thousand gold.

Okay finished the main quest....epic is an insult to the sheer power of that ending.

I mean pummeling a dragon god with three famous heroes, then seeing Kodlak come charging in...with the theme song playing....while using the sword called DRAGONBANE to boot.
Overall that ending was awesome and I thoroughly enjoyed it a lot more than Oblivion, and think that it is tied with Morrowind's for sure.

Now its back to trying to level to 50.

Thieves Guild sure knows how to party.

Btw for those wondering, I used this macro/text file which automatically takes off Essential status for NPCs. There are some exceptions but it catches most of them. So yes, the Thieves Guild in my game is dead.

There is never going to be a massive game like this without bugs.

I was quite surprised at how few there were. All I encountered were 2 and a half extra Louis Letrush clones and some keybinding hiccups.

It's one thing to QA test a 5-10 hour call of duty game thousands of times but it is simply not possible for a game like Skyrim with 400-500 hours of content. Bethesda could have hired hundreds of QA staff to test the game nonstop for two years and still never found everything.

If you wish to enjoy truly massive open world RPGs with thousands of NPCs, 350 primary locations, 200+ secondary locations, hundreds of quests, hundreds of hours of content, etc., then you are going to have to get used to some bugs.
