But Shouts are free! Besides, my dragonborn only uses shouts for practical jokes. Like the time that mad Talos priest in Whiterun started quoting some line from Talos saying he had the breath of winter. And I froze him solid. So Throw Voice is just perfect for more silliness.

With great power comes great irresponsibility. Image IPB

They are indeed a lot of fun when used correctly; not so much when an aged memory forgets to change Shouts, and this is all that is you got when being shredded by some observant vermin, undead, unseen trap, etc.  And Shouts have a longer cooldown than simply notching another arrow.

Plus, gotta love it when sniping, and a guard says, "It must be my imagination", when a still warm cohort is pinned to a chair, wall, etc.

Also, I have read hints that Slow Time may make sneaking past several guards quite entertaining; unconfirmed currently.

Recently became a vampire. At first it was a pain, but when I started using all the powers you get when you transform into one, it was super awesome!

Though I still prefer being a werewolf....

Why is it that I'm totally fine with fighting a Dwarven Centurion Master (in fact, I turned them all on in Blackreach, just to take them out), a horde of Draugr Deathlords, and every single Dragon Priest, but I absolutely despise fighting those stupid Forsworn Briar Hearts? Arrgh.

They can still one-shot me at level 52, with Legendary Daedric armor on; it just doesn't seem right. Waa.

Yes it insta-kills them.

Its like pulling that ONE bolt in a cartoon that demolishes a vehicle.

I hate fighting Briarhearts too but for reasons that I'm clueless on, Illia can kick the snot out of them so fast Its scary. Its worth keeping her around purely on that basis.

And I've worked up a pretty decent briarheart collection myself...

Wow, I feel pretty stupid, I had no idea you could do that. Image IPB

I guess it makes sense, though. I stumbled upon two hagravens "making" a Briarheart once; that was pretty trippy. He was laid out on the table, and they brought him to life, all Frankenstein-like.

Oh, I thought you were role playing Eorlund Grey-Mane :D

You mean me? Nah, I'm role playing a guy who was about to lose his head and now he wants to seize the day.

But honestly, I get a bit depressed when I reach the end of some games so I'm trying to delay that as much as I can. I remember Oblivion when I did finished the Main Quest  kinda soon, or at least, before I had closed the 60 Oblivion Gates with one of my chars. I couldn't keep playing it. I recreated a close of that char and kept playing, closed the 60 gates and never finished the MQ.

I'm willing to complete Skyrim, both Civil War and Main Quest but, I'm having a great time messing around with everything I can. I even entered the College at Winterhold, although I didn't do more than 1 quest there and I left the instructor waiting for me at the entrance of some ruins.

Ruins which I later got as destination from another quest so I was really happy I already had done that college thing. I had no idea that it would be required. I'm just going... going... going where the freezing winds take me... I'm still following an old Assassin's credo: "Nulla è reale, tutto è lecito"  (which should really be translated as "Nothing is real, everything is licit". =)

An armor rating of 1366 doesn't make sense. It is capped at 567 or so. 567 or higher only protects 80% of the damage. So 20% passes through, even if you have a million.

That's true. But keep in mind that often times, enemies have the same weapon perks as you do. If you're facing, for example, a bandit/bandit chief who's using a mace or warhammer, and has the adequate perks, his attack gets to ignore up to 50% of your armor. And that's when having an armor rating above the cap comes in useful. with ~1000 armor, you're still going to shrug off 80% of the physical damage

Ow, really good to know that! =)

What (or where) are the recipes for creating blacksmith/enchanting potions? I still haven't found those yet. Image IPB

Unless you're willing to spend hours mixing random ingredients and finding what properties they have, you can use this to speed up the process! =)  Someone else posted it many pages ago...

Ooh! Thanks! I figured there was something out there like that, but didn't really want to sift through 500+ pages in this thread.

@Ringo - ouch! I did that for a while, but had so many ingredients I was lugging around, that I was overencumbered most of the time. Now they all sit in a chest with the Glenmoril witches heads. Heehee.

I'm utterly impressed with myself, or rather, with my char. I know, I know, on TES IV forums they used to call me a Boaster but hey, it's cool to boast a little.

So, I'm no thief but I'm a great enchanter/smithing and I crafted these four items with +48% sneak and some with pickpocketing, muffle, etc.  On my first run I could only do the Goldenglow quest by fighting every mercenary there. Now with these items, I could sneak and pickpocket everyone. I didn't even had to slow from running to walk! And  just by having Firebolt armed on my left hand, the beehives automatically were set on fire when I passed near them! hahahaha ... It's just too much fun! =)

Anyone else noticing those thieves in Riften that keep getting killed by the guards?

Seems that they did not level their sneak skills well enough and around three of them have died so far.
I leveled my healing skills though by following them and healing them though a few times...gave me a laugh that was for sure.

Speaking of mages and magic, I recently finished the College of Winterhold MQ (as a proper mage this time), and I think the narrative is much better as a mage - the Master level quests certainly add to the idea that the protagonist has proved himself (or herself) to the mages who have seniority at the College. I wonder how the Synod and the College of Whispers will react to the news about the Eye of Magnus having been at the College of Winterhold, and the new Archmage wielding the Staff of Magnus. The Staff has appeared before (the last time was in Morrowind), but I'd imagine it would still draw some attention, especially since the Synod seems to be trying to gain more power back in Cyrodiil. There doesn't seem to be much information on either of the Cyrodiilic institutions of magic (I believe they are only referenced in the novel "The Internal City"), although I wonder if DLC or an expansion might address the two institutions in more detail.

I certainly agree about the narrative being better as a mage. I'm in the middle of doing Arniel's Endeavor now as a mage, well, the part that involves doing to Dwemer magic/enchantment machine-things. I'm not a huge fan of becoming the boss at the end of faction questlines anyway, because with the possible exception of the DB, there always feels like there's someone more qualified for the job. However it feels much more deserved becoming Arch-Mage when playing as a mage and working on improving magic, etc, compared to my main character, who was more of a rogue, and just dabbled in Illusion magic. I completed the College with her first, but felt silly.

Have you completed Arniel's Endeavor yet? I made a mage for the same reason, too - it felt odd to go through the storyline as an stealth assassin (especially since the only form of magic I ever used was restoration), but the Psijic storyline intrigued me. I think the "Master Ritual" quests and "Lost Legends" add to the experience of being a mage protagonist, and I agree that becoming Arch-Mage felt much more deserving in the end.

I wonder if the Synod might think the College of Winterhold has something to do with their team perishing in that Dwemer ruin.

Possibly, they might send Synod members to investigate the ruins of Mzulft to determine what transpired, although Paratus Decimius' insanity certainly won't help matters.

ReallyRue wrote...

Actually, I'm trying to find in-game books on the Synod and College of Whispers. So far I've found nothing, unfortunately.

Edit: Random, but I wish there was some way to know where your horse has run off to. I found a free horse the other day (as in a horse I could ride around on that didn't count as stealing), and it didn't wander off as they do in Oblivion, and it even fast travelled with me after I abandoned it outside a town. But then a dragon came and my horse ran off.

I don't think there's much information about the Snyod and the College of Whispers, outside of what's said in the College of Winterhold MQ and the brief references made in the Elder Scrolls novel "The Internal City." I'd love to learn more about them. Given the involvement of the Psijic Order at the College of Winterhold and the Thalmor's attempt to usurp control of the Eye of Magnus, I wonder how the Aldmeri Dominion will respond to the situation.

As guildmaster those thieves are an embarassment. As a thief myself I pickpocket all the bystanders while they admire their handywork at bringing them to justice.

I was quite surprised to see Maven kill one earlier today with a lightning bolt. Both because she's allied with the guild, and because I had no clue whatsoever she was a mage.

The only thing I enjoyed about the entire mages guild (which is what the college is) was decapitating Ancano at the end of it.

It was so utterly blah that I felt like it was pointless.

Find Macguffin
Learn about Macguffin
Someone misuses Macguffin
Some people die
Find anti-Macguffin
Save world

Wow real original there!

^ Yeah, it was a bit disappointing how easy it was to get into the college, actually. In Oblivion, you had to do some serious work before you were even allowed in. Then once you were in, you appreciated what you'd done to get there. In Skyrim, all you have to do is buy a spell if you don't have one, cast it, and voila!

I definitely preferred the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quest lines. Actually, the bard's college quests were nice, too, even though it wasn't an actual quest line (increase all of my skills? yes, please!)

I will have to wait a few more characters before doing the DB quest line....since I ate them as a werewolf....

However the thieves guild was very fun and it makes me a lot of money so I cant complain.
Sadly I got tired of old Mr. Frey and FUS ROH DAH'ed him off the statue.

When you have the elemental resistance perk, and Spell Breaker all your problems become minor annoyances to be dealt with at leisure.

Also shield bashing someone so hard that they drop their weapons and end up having to punch at you is HILARIOUS.

I will soon install Skyrim. Please say something that would cure my depression over the College questline being so short.

It's longer if you factor in "Lost Legends," the "Master Ritual" quests (for Restoration, Conjuration, Illusion, and Alteration), the quests provided by your fellow students, the four-part Arniel's Endeavor, and the minor quests provided to you by the senior mages at the College. It's much longer if you take those quests into consideration, instead of simply going through the main quests for the College of Winterhold.

Russalka wrote...

Is it at least nice to be a mage?

I found it to be enjoyable. It was a bit of an adjustment to go from stealth assassin to mage, but I liked it - the different schools of magic offer variety in handling enemies, from going invisible to avoid detection, to creating mayhem (frenzy) between enemies (like Draugr Deathlords, several of whom I faced at the same time along with a Dragon Priest during the Alteration Ritual Spell quest), summoning allies (like two Dremora Lords) to fight alongside you against a plethora of foes, and creating a magical armor around you for a limited time.

Russalka wrote...

I wish there was more recognition of one's achievements in the world. In Oblivion, not even the battlemages at the front gate recognised me as the Archmage.

It's not as bad as the front-gate guard thinking that the Arch-mage is a new student of the Mages Guild in Cyrodiil, and the members of the College do acknowledge you as the new Arch-mage (except for two who seem to repeat their standard dialogue). The guards in the Holds will acknowledge that you are a mage from the College, and will reference certain actions committed by the mages at the College, although their dialogue towards the protagonist tends to be random.

This still annoyed me a lot in this game. By the time i joined the Companions I was already a Thane of damn near every hold, winner of the civil war, trapped a dragon and done a huge amount of quests yet Farkas says he's never heard of me. That was a horrible blow to my ego

I just met Anska while playing last night, and I think she's piqued my interest in trying to be a pure mage again (first playthrough I started off with that intent, but changed horses mid-game).

She took out high-level Draugrs like nobody's business. I wish she could be a follower! Actually, are all/any mage followers that powerful?

(Anska was in High Gate Ruins, along with the Vokun mask).

Edit: Wait, what? According to the ES wiki, "Anska from high gate ruins will follow you anywhere." What does that mean? If you leave the site, without finishing the quest, she'll come with you? *crossing fingers*

On my second playthrough, I actually miss my mage character. There was no need to bother with these boring armours, weapons and smithing, I just destroyed things with my mind.

I also find that Skyrim is much more enjoyable if one eschews random exploration in favour of doing quests. The guilds and radiant quests take you to every location on the map anyway.
