I will soon install Skyrim. Please say something that would cure my depression over the College questline being so short.
It's longer if you factor in "Lost Legends," the "Master Ritual" quests (for Restoration, Conjuration, Illusion, and Alteration), the quests provided by your fellow students, the four-part Arniel's Endeavor, and the minor quests provided to you by the senior mages at the College. It's much longer if you take those quests into consideration, instead of simply going through the main quests for the College of Winterhold.

Is it at least nice to be a mage?
I found it to be enjoyable. It was a bit of an adjustment to go from stealth assassin to mage, but I liked it - the different schools of magic offer variety in handling enemies, from going invisible to avoid detection, to creating mayhem (frenzy) between enemies (like Draugr Deathlords, several of whom I faced at the same time along with a Dragon Priest during the Alteration Ritual Spell quest), summoning allies (like two Dremora Lords) to fight alongside you against a plethora of foes, and creating a magical armor around you for a limited time.

I wish there was more recognition of one's achievements in the world. In Oblivion, not even the battlemages at the front gate recognised me as the Archmage.
It's not as bad as the front-gate guard thinking that the Arch-mage is a new student of the Mages Guild in Cyrodiil, and the members of the College do acknowledge you as the new Arch-mage (except for two who seem to repeat their standard dialogue). The guards in the Holds will acknowledge that you are a mage from the College, and will reference certain actions committed by the mages at the College, although their dialogue towards the protagonist tends to be random.
