They let him escape, that's kinda the part you're missing.

They claim that they let him escape.  The whole document was written by Thalmor agents kissing up to their superiors, and the Altmer do not admit weakness or failure.  What else are they going to say?

And besides your bias do you have anything to argue against it? Any game proof?

It's not a matter of proof or not.  You unfortunately don't even get an option to ask Ulfric about it.  I'm just giving my interpretation.  You're free to take a different one, but you've got no more "proof" than anyone else.  I said that the whole document had a CYA and "we meant to do that" vibe- I didn't say "this is the way it is."

The thing is that many people seem to take the dossier at face value, just as they take The Bear of Markarth or other books at face value without considering who's writing it and interpretive spin.  People also seem to believe the Thalmor hype about them being infallible, unstoppable, etc.  It's kind of ironic.

If you kill Tullius, you can take his armor, which looks quite good on my female Nord. It was nice to add another change to my wardrobe. xD

My mannequins scare me, since they decide to randomly change or take off what I put on them. On the plus side, they always make duplicate pieces of whatever armor I store on them, so that's always nice.

Blackreach...just...WOW!

I thought Alftand was a worthy dungeon, with a few toughies spread throughout, and so much loot, I literally had to leave three stashes strategically behind. At the end, I was thinking wow, "what a great dungeon, let's go grab that scroll..."

...then I opened the door to Blackreach.

I'm still in there, determined to explore every square inch. Feels like an underground and maddeningly dark version of Big Mountain.

Blackreach is amazing. Image IPB

I did find a bit of a black hole near one of the waterfalls, though. My character got stuck in sparkly black, and couldn't jump or whirlwind sprint out of it, so I had to reload.

You know, I was glad to have Sinderion's lab right at the entrance.  At least it gives me a place to stash all the loot I'm dragging out of the cavern at present.  That chest of his is filled to the brim after a couple of loot drops.  I only hope I can get back to retrieve it all (over several trips it would seem), not to mention get back to the three stashes I've left behind in Alftand.

Yeah, Blackreach is my favorite area thus far.  I only wish it had a light switch.Image IPB

It's true, mannequins are great for duplicating armor. I can't tell you how many sets of ebony armor I have now, just from my house in Markarth.

Sadly, none of them have duplicated unique armor for me yet (Nightingale, Linwe's, etc.)

Hopefully it won't reset the area once you leave. I noticed that crimson nirnroot respawned, so be careful. You may want to recruit a pack mule...err...follower to help you cart all that stuff out of there.

I agree. I saw a couple of images of Blackreach in this thread, but had no idea what it was, or how to get to it. When I did, I was in awe. Simply. Amazing.

Anyone else disappointed in Hjerim? It's spacious, but poorly decorated and designed. Feels quite empty compared to Proudspire Manor and Vlindrel Hall.

Really? Hjerim is my favorite, actually. After that is probably Vlindrel Hall (Markarth) for me.

On a sidenote, Addai, thanks for the tip about talking to Ulfric about becoming a Thane. I thought I already had, but apparently not. Now Calder is there, and that empty room is his. Derp. Mystery solved.

It's funny how the Forsworn have the same goals as the Stormcloaks, i.e. purging the lands they view as their own off  "outlanders".  But Madanach and his Forsworn are at least honest about it. Madanach straight out tells you that your character's going to get killed in any Forsworn camp even though you helped them.

Ulfric never speaks straight, even though every Stormcloak grunt spouts drivel about "true sons and daughters of Skyrim" (ha!) and all his lieutenants can't stop speaking about "killing the traitors".

It's also striking how some Jarls loyal to Ulfric mention that he's in it for his own glory, even though they agree with his cause.

Yeah, that's all well and good - except the Stormcloaks aren't violent barbarians who worship Hagravens, practice dark magic, animal (and people) mutilation, cannibalism, childnapping (from a Breton family, no less), and all sorts of other wonderful things befitting a friendly, civilized culture like what the Forsworn have.

And I find it equally striking how several of the Jarls who say that about Ulfric are guilty of that themselves - especially Laila Law-Giver (a true coward) who is nothing more than Maven Black-Briar's little pet.

virumor wrote...
No. Both parties sit on their asses doing nothing until the player comes in and either does all their work, or ends the stalemate with a truce (which is frankly more than Ulfric the Coward deserves).

That's because Tullius and Ulfric are quest-givers, and the Empire and Stormcloak campaigns are the associated questlines. It has nothing to do with the two "sitting on their asses", and has everything to do with the gameplay itself.

I didn't decide to kill him until he asked me to kill the one nice guy in the prison to 'prove' myself to him. Between that and ordering the murder of innocent people on the streets of Markath I didn't see much point in keeping him around.

As for his 'toughness', well never got to see that. Bound swords are really easy to sneak into prisons.
He didn't get very far.

Werewolf blood is even easier, tip to Madanach, don't tell a werewolf Nord that you're going to paint the walls with Nord blood. It was so fun watching my wolf pop his head.

virumor wrote...

It's amazing for all the claims about Nord superiority, one basically encounters the exact opposite at every step.

This disagrees

I love Windhelm and I love the exterior of Hjerim, but the interior of the home does nothing for me. There is a table of sacks and other random crap in the corner when you first walk in near the kitchen entrance though the house has been fully upgraded. The open space downstairs needs a fireplace or firepit with chairs and table to fill out the room. The alchemy and enchanting lab is too dark, I feel like I have to cast candlelight every time I use the stations. Everything seems to be pushed against the walls. Decorations are sparse, there are no potted plants etc. I'm not impressed. I was expecting more from the second most expensive house in the game.

Proudspire Manor and Vlindrel hall are much better homes.

Sinderion...  Image IPB  I had been thinking about him all game, every time I picked up a nirnroot.  That was gutting to find his body.  Though a nice little touch.

Blackreach was an amazing WTF?!!! revelation, the same as the Dwemer ruins.  Though I could not get out of Blackreach fast enough and will probably never do it justice.  It's got the same dark-light contrast as Bioshock that is sure to give me a migraine.  And it felt so claustrophobic and creepy, and.... creepy.

Potted plants, hehehe. There aren't any real windows, so I guess it's not surprising that there aren't any. However, Vlindrel hall has plants in the entryway with no windows, so...yeah.

It is a little empty, but it's easy to move around in. If you marry Mjoll, and have her and her shadow move into a house with you, Hjerim is a good choice. It seemed like I was constantly running directly into Mjoll, Aerin, or the housecarl in all of the other houses.

I wish any one of the houses would have had a smelter and blacksmithing equipment. I would have gladly paid extra for it.

I don't care for the interior, either, but for the opposite reason- it's too "light," the same as Ulfric's hall.  It's not a warm firelight cast- it's too bright.  I really love the upper rooms of Windhelm palace precisely because they're dark, like a real castle.  And I love the windows up there.

Image IPB

I've come to appreciate Hjerim's interior for its space, however.  It's the only house in the game where you aren't bumbling around stuff.  I especially dislike the Solitude and Winterrun houses for that.

@Happy_daiz Thank you! I had lots of fun making Valkyrie; all she has left to do is the Dark Brotherhood. Not sure what race I'll try next for my Imperial playthrough.

And you guys are super lucky Hjerim works for you. I tried every work-around, but nothing lets the quest trigger. I would love to be able to buy it and see it decorated and a new housecarl. This is *my* Hjerim. :(

I guess between all the houses, Solitude is probably my favorite, and Riften my least favorite, but they are really all nice and I love that they are all unique. :wizard:

I loved the Dark Brotherhood quest line; especially Shadowmere, and (call me crazy), but I also love Cicero. Hard to explain without spoilering.

So, in my new playthrough, I got to the part where the Greybeards summoned my character to High Hrothgar ("Dovahkiin!"). Right in the middle of the summons, a courier ran up to me, saying he had a letter for me. I've missed getting to listen to that in both of my playthroughs, because of some turd interrupting it.

Arrgh, I wish the timing of dialogue was planned out a little better in Skyrim. I don't know how many times I've been interrupted right in the middle of a conversation by some random NPC or follower talking (Mjoll, I'm looking at you).

I can't wait for mods to come out, I've played 100 hours on oblivion because of Viconia's mod
