Yeah, there's no reason to use a companion as a stealth character.

If the College of Winterhold questline is as long as the thieves guild my guess is it will take about 200-300 hours or so to become archmage

Yes it's just as short as the Thieve's Guild questline.

Short? I thought the "main" TG quest line was short, but if you want to become Guild Master, you have to do 25 additional regular and special "jobs" to get there. That took forever, I thought.

Anyway, the mage quest line was the first one I did, and became Arch Mage somewhere between levels 10-20. I didn't find out until later, here on BSN, that that's not actually the "end". You can continue, and do the mastery stuff.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked down, since there's already a Skyrim one. I'm betting it will be soon.

In that case, In B4 lock.

College of Winterhold was the first guild I joined, hoping to learn more spells than were available from court wizards etc, but even when I finished, all the spells were the same, so I was quite disappointed.

Also disappointed by the fact that 1 day you're an apprentice, 3 dungeon crawls later, you're archmage.

That hasn't been my experience at all. It took me 200 hours just to get halfway through the thieves guild quest line at level 45. The sweep, heist, burglary, numbers, etc., jobs that you get from Vex and Devlin at the very beginning of this quest line send you all over Skyrim. If you don't use fast travel it is quite an excellent way to get to know the land.

I've been playing a new character who joined the Companions, not sure how long it will take to complete this faction questline, but I'm at about 40 hours with this character and just did the first quest where you become a werewolf.

I need a companion to carry all my crap. I can't not pick stuff up!

Why should this thread be locked?? It's the primary Skyrim thread since forever.

I think I'm just too impatient. It took me forever to get through the dungeon for the first piece of Wuuthrad last night, as I tried to stick to the sneak + archery idea.

When I first went in, I was around level 7, and was level 10 by the time I left. Crazy.

I just need to stick with it, I guess. But it's so much faster to just rush in and start pounding peeps to their death. /whine

It's no wonder my mage playthrough didn't end up having anything to do with spellcasting, and turned into a brutal one-handed slaughterfest. I think I'm destined to play the same way every time.

Image IPB My playthrough style, so far, has all the subtlety of half a brick in a sock. All that's missing is someone shouting Leeeeeroy Jenkins! Doing it on expert has got me killed a few times, but it's proved quite succesful suprisingly!

Maybe I'm just fooling myself by thinking I can be subtle and sneaky. I'm not that way in life, maybe I can't be that way in a game? Image IPB

I think it get's better and easier the higher levels you get, paticularly with some of the later stealth perks which just do insane amounts of damage, but early on I've found it hugely satisfying to run around decapitating enemies with two swords. Although I'm sure you can be subtle or sneaky in real life.Image IPB

Sneak + archery makes everything very easy.

This. I did manage to clear out Shimmermist Cave very early on in a previous playthrough using this strategy (though it took considerably more time than it would have if I were higher leveled and had better equipment).

Anyway, I went ahead and jumped into the Sightless Pit, got a few rooms and corridors in, then reloaded my way out of that place. My character didn't stand a chance - not even with Sneak and Archery. The Falmer were too many and there was too much light to sneak effectively.

I'll go back later to check it out - preferably when I'm level 20+, have higher Sneak and Archery, and have Orcish equipment or higher.

That was snipped from a different thread that did get locked a few hours ago. Image IPB

Yeah, I tend to go with a follower as well. I feel...a little scared out there in the big, bad world of Tamriel all by my lonesome, and I need a pack mule.

I started this new playthrough using Faendal from Riverwood. He's actually pretty good with the sneaking.

Falmer are blind. Light doesn't really matter to sneak with them.

Speaking of Falmer, I was reading about how the Snow Prince was killed in the battle of Moesring, and many of the snow elves that were left got massacred by the Nords. Once the survivors retreated underground, the Dwemer tricked them into eating toxic algae that caused blindness. Dang, those Dwemer were a-holes...(and that reminds me of Jacob's loyalty mission in ME2. Hmm).

No point, just a sad story.

True.

Still, it seems that sneaking in the light influences my detection rate, even with Falmer - perhaps it's an oversight by Bethesda. :/

EDIT: ...you know, I just opened up my skill menu and realized I forgot to pick the "Muffled Movement" perk. Which would explain a lot.

I wonder what must be going through their minds, after battling it out with the Nords and rebelling against the Dwemer despite being blind. According to speculation from one of the books, "The Falmer: A Study,"  the author, Ursa Uthra, thinks that the Falmer could be rebuilding their strength. "In recent years, however, the sightings of these creatures have become more and more frequent. Their raids, more organized. Their attacks, more brutal. In fact, one might even come to the conclusion that the Falmer are ready to change once again. Could it be true? Are the snow elves of ages past ready to reclaim their long-forgotten glory? Are they ready to surge to the surface, and make war upon the "light dwellers"? If that happens - if the Falmer are indeed planning on reconquering Skyrim - I fear a horror neither man nor gods could possibly stand against."

Oooh... foreshadowing for a possible TES expansion or game, perhaps? There does seem to be a very large concentration of Falmer in Skyrim's underground, and there would no doubt be even more that we don't see in the game.

I do actually feel a bit sorry for them - they were unduly punished by the Nords and (especially) the Dwemer, and I always feel a little depressed when I ransack one of their colonies.

It would be neat, though, if we met some true Snow Elves in a future game - ones that managed to avoid the wrath of the Nords and cruelty of the Dwemer.

Don't take the perk, it's a waste, really. Just cast muffle.

Is that you, Ringo? =) (j/k - cool vid)

Now, there's nothing bad on having a companion, prefferably your wife, as a stealthy char. Finally she took the items I crafted for her with so much love, including some muffling in her boots so she wouldn't kills my +200% stealth from my Aassassin's gear. (ps: with those items I can dance, sing, jump, run around, any targets, as long as I'm not detected when I started it. I can't vanish in the air but that's a perk and I have no perks in Stealth!) Ain't this the loveliest couple?

Image IPB

But when I want it easy, it's back on main gear and everything dies on 1 hit, if I use Mark of the Dead on them. Giants, Mammoths, Dragons, Boss Bandits, Draugrs, anything! Nothing can resits my Sprint Double Crit attack with my main gear and a shout to prepare the victim! =))

How do you do that "assassin animation" when you come from behind and want to assassinate someone? Is it a perk?

I haven't found any books about the Falmer yet. So they are mutated snow elves so to say? I thought maybe they were cursed/mutated/something Dwemer.:P

I tried to sneak in sightless pit, but indeed, there were just too many of those blasted Falmers. One pretty much scared me to death by suddenly standing right behind me. When I turned around, I yelped. Real cave trauma since then.:pinched:
