Oh man, it was so easy to abuse the spell creation system in Morrowind - you could practically become a freakin' god, and possibly even break the game entirely using it.
It's no wonder they took it out, TBH.
I agree as this could also be the case in Oblivion. But if they were going to take it out they really should have scaled and leveled the spells.
That's true. I didn't really like the spell creation in older ES games. Somehow playing with all those numbers took away the magic from a spellcasting system.
I'm a big fan of specific spells with established tradition, history, creators, etc - like what artifacts tend to have.
DnD systems are especially good with that - and some spell names taken from their creators - like Morekainen's Sword, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, Melph's Acid Arrow, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Bigby's Forcefull Hand, Abu Dhalbi's Horrid Wilting, etc.
It's great if every spell is unique and can do something distinctively different from all the others. Even better if spells have their lore too. That's much better then playing with numbers for range, magnitude, delivery method and so on.
Skyrim went the right way, IMVHO. But the magic system is still far from perfection. I agree that the main issue is lack of spell scaling. Your skill level should be a major dertermining factor at how strong your spells are. And they should scale to remain at least somewhat competetive with weapons, even at high levels.

My first playthrough, with my Breton mage-turned-pseudo-warrior was just around 300 hours. Completed the main quest, along with all guilds/factions, and oodles of side quests (found over 300 locations, so yeah, lots of quests). By the time I quit that playthrough, I had literally just gotten my smithing to 100, and was finally able to wear dragonscale.
My second, an Imperial, I had to quit playing, because I was confused about what she was going to be. I'm saving her for later.
My third is a Bosmer archer, and I'm quite pleased that I was able to make her somewhat pretty. Hooray. Realized that I suck at archery, even with perks. I'm too impatient, but I am getting used to sneaking, now. *sigh* I'm hoping I'll get back to this one, just so I can say I made it through it.
My fourth is an Altmer pure mage - she's pretty, and I'm shocked. Most of them are kinda...hideous. This time around, I'm actually sticking to magic, and am finding it much more enjoyable. After seeing how other people were turning enemies against each other, I was inspired.

IF ONLY LYDIA DID NOT CHARGE IN AND GET US BOTH KILLED.
Who me? Miffed? Noooooo.
Though I desire companions to realize that I am trying to pick someone off because I dont want to fight them face to face....

@Giggles, I had pretty good luck with Faendal not charging in on people. Granted, he's an archer, and kind of wimpy at that, but he's been ok for stealth missions.

I once had the PERFECT head shot lined up...then Lydia pushes me out of the way charges in and gets murdered then all the mages come and kill me.
Lets just say that I am very much thinking of not taking companions around anymore after that.

I thought she was great. She was like my sister-in-arms, but far too often, she died by my blade, as it were. It was just too painful to continue.

Yeah, if you can stand to hear, "I am sworn to carry your burdens", ad nauseum.
Eh, I get driven mad by the "Summon Lucien" move. He's a great fighter, but how many times does he have to tell the story about so-and-so bellamont?

I think she's lasted longer in my playthroughs as I've given her a suit of legendary steel plate armour and great sword, so she can hold her own. But then again since my own playstyle isn't that subtle most attention gets focused on me. Legendary Daedric armour and maxed out single handed sword skills and dual wielding... watch as the heads come flying off.
I do like Aela the huntress as a companion though, given her some legendary gilded elven armour when she travels with me. I really shoud sell some of the armour I've smithed.

Good point. I let him out to play just once, and never again. I thought I'd try wiping out bandit camps with a full posse (Atronachs, stray dog, Lucien LaChance, and whichever follower I had at that time). It was ridiculous, and Lucien never, ever shuts up. Actually, now that you mention it, he's worse than Mjoll, which is a miracle in itself.
Edit: I forgot to add that Shadowmere was also part of the kill posse.

i was on the final, final thieves guild quest mission and my power went out and once it came back on i realized my last save was 2 hours before hand since 2 of my autos were corrupt. so i shouted aids as i always do.
Damn, I feel you. Had something similar happen to me, well not really, but I lost my first character which was level 47 a while ago and had to start over. Sucked. D:
The Thieves Guild has the best storyline IMO, don't give up!
It really does although the Companions guild makes you feel like less of a douchebag. Also werewolves are awesome.
i am a werewolve also since i did a couple of there quest so that i could be one then i stoped,i'll probably finish there stuff after i kill the person at fort greymoor.

I've started talking Aela the Huntress with me on the last few missions and she frightens me. I keep finding dead enemies that she shot through walls. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, I never see her doing this either. I dare not cross her for there will be no hiding. Also she looks like a superhero in Nightingale armour. Oddly she uses the upgraded bow I gave her until I give her a sword and sheild, then she switches back to her old hunting bow when its time to shoot stuff.

Similar thing happens to Lydia. when I send her back to the house she appears with Steel armour, despite giving her steel plate. I think you have to reequip her, at least with the armour. i.e. take it then give it back or tell her to equip it if you give her something new.

Just have to watch it- my archery is powerful enough now that if I accidentally hit him in the back, it's a death sentence.

Is it bad that I now have 4 characters built?

My first was also a Breton Archer/ Mage/ Rogue; stopped a little before your time to look at some other designs. I thought of re-living this one from an earlier save to travel more as more of a magic resistant Mage rather than create a new Breton; maybe not.
The next is a Dark Elf Mage; planning on starting as a Stormcloak, but will alter the plans after seeing the despair in Windhelm. Most likely will explore the Dark Side of life; pun itended.
The next one was to be a noble hearted 2H Nord, but this changed to my first attempt at an Orc; just to try my hand at heavy armor. No thieving, Colleges,or underhanded guilds, but may take the Companion's offer to finally see that storyline.
Note: for archers, try the stealth sighting and focus about two bands of an archery target below center. This is quite fun when you must use Eagle Eye to zoom in just to view the target. This was done a few times to impress on others (and myself) that Ebon was more than a caster of impressive illusions, and a noted sneak thief.
And at each location whenever possible, my Breton would take... a sweet roll!

With my archer, I do use Eagle Eye, and have a couple of other archery perks as well, but my biggest problem is that I'm just not seeing targets before I stumble upon them.
In my first playthrough, I acquired all of the shouts, so I was able to use Aura Whisper to see where they were at, but in these new ones, they're too low-level to use Detect Life, and I haven't gotten the AW shout yet. Might need to move that to the top of my priority list.
Edit: And can I just say how happy I am that resistances are fixed from the latest patch? What a tragedy it was for my Breton, who was supposed to have magic resistance, to be just like everyone else. Waa.

Hehe, yeah. That sound of resignation "here we go again what rubbish are you going to get me to carry this time."

We probably have very similar builds, and just for the record I'm probably the least subtle player playing Skyrim. My Nord tried sneaking on that Stormcloak Falkreath mission, and was detected almost the exact moment he stepped away from the "what's the plan" meeting! Ah well, sneaking in the backway wasn't really his style anyway.
I've had Mjoll as a companion for well over 200 hours, and while she is supposedly designed as two-handed, (and I've leveraged the heck out of that for quite some time now), she has backed way off as of late and has gone almost completely ranged. She is now hanging so far back, that while I was clearing out some Thalmor area, I literally thought I was alone (thought she might be stuck way behind with pathing issues) as I was really starting to get horded, until I saw a Familiar come out of nowhere and attack a Thalmor who was sticking me with arrows like a pin cushion, and then another one spontaneously explode in a blast of fire. I caught myself thinking, That's my Girl! But it is new behavior for her, most likely keyed on my behavior of course.
It's been interesting to see companion behavior evolve as my play style has settled into a more predictable routine over time.

Speaking of werewolves, is anyone else curious how Arnbjorn made it to become a member of the Circle? He recognized my protagonist as "Moon-born," mentioned that he was a member of the Companions and left because his methods bothered them, but I wonder how he lasted long enough in the Companions to become a member of the Circle, only to leave because they were bothered by his methods. Werewolves aren't immortal, so he had to have been a member within this lifetime. I'd assume that he wouldn't be welcomed into the Circle if his methods initially bothered the Companions. Perhaps his methods changed when he became a werewolf? Vilkas and Farkas seem to act as though being a werewolf made them feel and think differently.

Oh my god its so freaking hilarious to watch a dungeon clear itself for you.
I nearly wanted to play the Benny Hill theme song watching all those Necromancer run around fighting each other for me.
