Am alone in preferring to try take on a dungeon or cave alone with no follower?

My follower sometimes gets in the way and a few times I had to make them stay sooo far away because the last time I made them stay, they just showed up and stole my kills!

But I will say this, having them wait outside is great because after I'm done, I come back to load them up with goodies from the dead. Good packrat. Aw....I miss the actual pack rats!

I started out that way but it was almost impossible to survive any combat encounters at low level playing on master. As soon as I found a follower I was still dying frequently, but doing much better. I did manage to complete Bleak Falls Barrow solo, however, although it took several hours.

I'm a bit of a completionist, and was driven by changing map locations from black to white.

I am exactly the same, but I'm having a lot more fun with the exploration aspect after disabling the HUD compass. (In SkyrimPrefs.ini change "bShowCompass=1" to "bShowCompass=0") I find now I frequently have to pay attention to real visual cues in the landscape like lakes, rivers, hills, mountains, etc., referring often to my map.

^Same here...completionist; not to mention Dwemer Ruins are probably my favorite areas of the game. I'm fascinated with them...and the loot is still quite an attraction to me, even after being through many of them already. Falmer, not so much.

You really do enjoy a challenge, don't you? Image IPB

Been playing solo myself, unless a companion was forced upon me.

And thanks to the posting advice of this group, I bested the last dungeon of outlaws using Fury and Conjure Flame 'elemental' as an 11th lMage. Instead of sniping like last session, I let the band of merry men and Conjurations take care of clean-up work. And Stealth keeps me hidden as I move away from the conflict.

Definitely not alone.  I leave my companions (unless it's a Dwemer Ruin) out on the doorstep of many dungeons primarily because I'm still farming XP for leveling and they have an annoying tendency to muck that up.

Actually, it's a fun way to explore. If I did this from the beginning, it probably would have taken a really long time to find High Hrothgar, but other than that, it helps me feel more immersed in the world. And I'm discovering more new locations through quests, as well as identifying caves and forts, etc., from a distance.

You can actually see most of the larger cities from very far away, so the compass feels a bit redundant after playing like this for a while. I don't think I would enjoy going back to using the compass.

I also enjoy the Dwemer ruins; they're probably my favorite type of dungeons to play in. Metal doesn't scare me. Falmer on the other hand? I don't care what level I'm at, I still don't care for them.

Blackreach is my favorite, although I have yet to go back and fight that...oh, I'd hate to spoil it.

I actually don't care about Falmer.

Chaurus? Those beasts are a different matter altogether

^ Blech, I really, really dislike Chaurus, too. And when they're together, it's a recipe for disaster. Good one, Bethesda.

Hehe, yeah. Just yesterday I was hiding from some Chaurus when I noticed that I had run straight into a Falmer Gloomlurker and a Dwemer Centurion. Good times... until they cornered me.

I actually don't mind fighting Centurion; they're kind of slow, and you can more or less just get out of their way.

Ugh, last night, I did Sanguine's quest fairly early on, and Kharjo and I got our butts handed to us by conjurers in short order. Being a pure mage, in standard mage dress is a little more challenging than wearing armor, that's for sure! I'm trying to get my Enchantment level up so I can add my own stuff, but it's taking a while. How quickly we forget what it's like in the beginning!

I think the "Mage Armor" perk in the Alteration tree is a must have for pure mages. Ebonyflesh grants 300 armor rating with three points in that perk. Not that bad for somebody who is just wearing cloth :o

^ Yep, I just got the first level mage armor perk, and am working hard to get the next ones. It's funny, because Alteration isn't usually where my mages would be skilled, but I'm learning the value of it, that's for sure. You might even say the hard way. Illusion is humming along nicely, as well. I did make it through that horde of mages, and got the Sanguine Rose in the second try. Phew!

I was happy to discover that you could enchant literally anything, as far as clothes are concerned. If you wanted to be a crazy mage chef, you could be!

On a separate note, is there some trick to triggering Mephala's quest? I haven't been able to get that to start.

You hear the rumor necessary to start Mephala's quest (at the Bannered Mare) at level 20, which is possible after your character has completed the MQ Dragon Rising. Only Hulda will provide the rumor.

^ Aha! Thank you! I'd read in one place that you get the quest from the barkeep, and on one of the wikis, it says it's something you overhear in the Bannered Mare, but it didn't specify which level. That helps. I guess I'm a few levels away.

Edit: Oh, you added more detail to your response! Got it. Image IPB

Nah, I like having Mjoll around. Numerous times she had saved my skin with her enchanted two handed sword.

I also like thinking that all the time I spend with her makes the marriage afterwards more logical and plausible, instead of two random people meeting and

"Nice Amulet"
"You like me?"
"I do"
"Yeah, I do too"
"LET'S MARRY"

Man... just met another daedric prince, Molag Bal. Did he got even more nasty since Oblivion?

Can these guys stop being gigantic assclowns? Where is Martin Septim or Akatosh, when I need somebody to slap the hell out of some impertinent daedric lord?

Yeah, Molag Bal is not particularly nice in Skyrim, but the prize for being a turd for him is definitely worth it.

Speaking of slapping the hell out of people, I wish I could do that with Delphine and Esbern. I'm still peeved at them from my last playthrough. The nerve of some people!

A new patch just downloaded from Steam - I think this is to enable use of 4GB RAM.

Yeah... to hell with Delphine and Esbern. They're not worthy of the name they carry - the Blades have only ever been commanded by the Dragonborn, not the other way around.

And my command is that Paarthurnax lives. So unless they wish to challenge me or Paarthurnax directly, they can fade back into obscurity for all I care.

They aren't going to live much longer anyway. I suppose the three companions picked by the Dragonborn could carry on the legacy - it's likely if the companions are long-lived, like elves, and I doubt the new recruits would have the same narrow mindset about Paarthurnax as Delphine and Esbern.
