@Billy:

Play on a laptop, that's what I do. You might not be able to run all of the highest settings, or get the HD Texture packs (I compensate with Shader Suites), I know my desktop certainly can, but using a laptop is just so much more convenient. You don't have to lug and connect your PC tower to the TV and pack it all up once you're done.

You can play without worrying about changing settings to better suit the resolution since it just ports the image to the TV and if other people need to use it, you don't have to stop playing.

;)

Also, and this is really lazy of me, but it's much easier to cook something using the oven while playing Skyrim. Really useful when you've got something for ~30-45 minutes and inbetween that 30-45 minute period, you need to check every couple of minutes to see whether it's properly cooked.

Yeah, I'm awful. No need to tell me.

But the lappie is why I probably can't handle the HD texture packs. Still, a worthy trade off.

I did have a laptop a few years ago, when I was moving around a lot at Uni, but I switched to a custom made desktop with a smaller HD moniter, which has served me very well. But, with my cooking skills, a laptop in the kitchen is just asking for disaster... I can cook very well suprisingly, but I make a bit of a mess at times.

Although Kitchen gaming is interesting, who said men can't multi task! Now, if you'll now excuse me I've dropped hot coffee on my trousers whilst trying to type at the same time as drinking. Image IPB

Just don't do it when you're frying something. Especially when you're in the middle of a good quest.

Because when you hear a Guard going "Culminary Magic's fine, just don't go down burning any buildings!" it's probably too late...

:D

I think I may check out a water mod or two, it does look a bit weird. Immersive Water (v3) looks really good. Downloading now.

You know, I'm curious about something: if Ulfric is such a merciless monster who ruthlessly executes all who oppose him (as "The Bear of Markarth" would have us believe), how come he doesn't put all of the Empire supporters to the axe after the siege of Whiterun? Falkreath? Markarth? Solitude?

He even accepts their respective jarls' surrenders, and allows Elisif to continue governing Hjaalmarch. How is that a man who just ruthlessly executes all who aren't "with him"?

Because if the choice is too black & white, people wouldn't have much incentive to join the Stormcloaks unless you're roleplaying a psychopath. Like with Caesar's Legion in FO:NV.

There was barely incentive to join Caesar's legion at all

sure his kind of government would have worked 200 years ago, when humans first started coming out of the vaults, but after establishment of cities and communities, CDR and House are much better choices

Wow, this was quite surprising to read today:

The next entry in the fantasy role-playing Dragon Age series will draw inspiration from both of its predecessors as well as open-world games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, developer BioWare said.

Speaking to Wired.com in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, BioWare CEO and co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka said the company has been listening to its fans and learning from the strengths and weaknesses of both Dragon Age II, the latest entry in the popular series, and other games that are on the market today.

“[The next Dragon Age] is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it’s also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open world feel,” Muzyka said.

“We’re checking [Skyrim] out aggressively. We like it. We’re big admirers of [Bethesda] and the product,” he said. “We think we can do some wonderful things.”

“How do we combine the new innovations we brought in Dragon Age II with the experience people were looking for in Dragon Age: Origins?” Muzyka said.

“Our goal is to surprise and delight our fans,” Muzyka said. “I’ve seen something in the last couple of weeks that is really the future of that franchise that is so compelling, I am so looking forward to being able to announce it.”

Muzyka would not elaborate on this tease, though BioWare VP and co-founder Greg Zeschuk chimed in with a joking suggestion of his own.

“The most realistic beards ever in videogames,” Zeschuk said.

Sounds like great news!

Agreed!

Hope it restores the freedom to build any class with any armor or weapon choice; does not remove the more detailed dialogues and storylines.

Sure; it is about profits - tis a game Company/ Business, after all -  but if it delivers, I would ask for it for Christmas!

Last night, I put some of what I've learned, here in this thread, in action. (Thank you, everyone!)

I went to retrieve Jurgen Windcaller's horn for the Greybeards, and tested out Frenzy for the first time on the two groups of mages waiting for us when we entered.

It didn't work out so well with the Bandit Marauder - Kharjo went down to his knees almost immediately, and I had to face off with the BM myself. It was pretty pathetic, really - he chased my squishy mage around the room, while she was frantically trying to heal and conjure up another flame atronach. Finally I got her on one side of the little half wall in the middle of the room, and started flaming him. It was very, very sad, but finally he was dead. Those are tough when you're low-level and pure mage.

For the next set of mages, (that were conveniently huddled), I tried Frenzy again. This time, I got a message saying that so-and-so was too powerful for Frenzy, and the eyeball was starting to open. Oh, no! I backed off, heard some commotion, and noticed that there was only one red dot on the compass. Apparently it DID work, and there was just one left, which we dispatched quite easily.

Yay, for Frenzy! Image IPB

I got through the dungeon, and on the way out, reanimated every bandit along the way, just for fun. For the last one, I dual-flamed him, and before he turned into a pile of ashes, he said, "thank you". That's the first time I've had that happen.

Oh, and P.S., I made a 5th character last night - my Khajiit! I think I'm officially obsessed, now.

@ happy_daiz - very sim incident with my low lvl 13th Mage late last evening, using Fury and Conjure Fire elemental. It took far too long for my tastes, as an archer might have cleaned a den much, much faster.

But using a combo of Stealth and luring foes into their own traps was quite enjoyable! Hide in the rubble, and conjure something atop a pressure plate, or draw the foes into oil filled rooms and use Flames; very well done - literally!

Cool. :)

Usually the "thank you" comes from vampires when you kill them.

I don't know how I missed this in my first playthrough, but have you noticed that there's usually an oil lamp above those oil slicks that you can shoot down with an arrow? Ugh, total facepalm. I had no idea you could do that, until I mis-fired and one came down.

It makes sense, I mean...where would the oil come from? Up above. Derp.

That's a good point, Addai - Dunmer and Argonians have some bad blood between them because of a huge slave rebellion that drove many Dunmer out of Morrowind IIRC. I can't remember the exact details, but it's mentioned in a book somewhere.

Anyway, I seem to have run into a little problem: I can't get the quest "Blood on the Ice" to trigger. It usually triggered upon the second time I enter Windhelm in previous files, but for some reason isn't triggering this time. I hope it will trigger soon, for this particular save file's sake - I'll not continue another minute with it and start over again otherwise.

Black Marsh invaded Morrowind after the Vvardenfell eruption, basically taking advantage of the chaos.

I think it's supposed to be after 4 times entering Windhelm, though there is a bug where that quest doesn't trigger.  They'll have to fix it since it's one of the biggest complaints, and affects being able to get the player house.

I thought I lost Kharjo again... turns out I had left him somewhere in the ruin and forgotten I told him to wait.  Thank the divines for the sexiest shout of all, Aura Whisper.  Also helpful in Forsworn camps.  :)

Backing up a little bit...

In my mage playthrough, that I started over the weekend, this quest triggered the first time I entered Windhelm. I literally walked around the corner, and it triggered.

Edit: I Image IPB Aura Whisper.

The hardest traps for me to notice are the ones triggered by trip lines, esp on chests. This is mostly due to playing a lot in 3rd person, but sometimes the lines are well concealed in shadows. Took me a while to discover that one may use Lockpick skills to remove some of them, too.

Also, playing a Dark Elf with 50% Fire Resistance helps a lot; sometimes making recovering loot more enjoyable. Coin bag on the back of the forge; mine!

Recommended tactic: wait and see. Being Twitchless in RL, I sometimes freeze a little at the controls, or take a bit to ponder my next move. Yesterday, I encountered a stream of fire that had to be passed to get into the next area, and while I was deciding on what to do, the trap actually ran out of fuel! HUZZAH!

^ I noticed the traps on chests in an outdoor camp a week or so ago (apparently missed all of those in my first playthrough, which explains why I got hurt opening chests so often). This particular chest was underneath a staircase, and I almost missed the trap wire on it. Sadly, the loot wasn't all that great, iirc.

The camp was a mammoth poaching one, complete with a dead one in the underground portion of it. Image IPB

Are there any "Stealth" followers in Skyrim? I can't sneak when I'm having someone like Lydia around and would need someone with as good sneaking skills as I have.

^ Jenassa is pretty good with stealth, and I thought Faendal was good, too (it's also handy that you can get him early on, and he's an archery trainer).

For those of you who like crafting, definitely get the More Craftables mod- it makes it more fun to have a greater variety of things you can make and improve.  This character is getting her smithing up quite high just improving the crap she loots.  It works with my roleplay story since she married Balimund so she could be learning from him.  With the mod I was able to make my own Nightingale armor, too, since I didn't like the enchantments on the original.

Is that the one with the Holy Gold Daedric Armor? ... "Evil has been purged"... lol ... sound like a fun mod! =)

Image IPB  I dunno, my skill level isn't there yet and stuff only appears that you could actually smith.  I made some great Nightingale bows, and it's good to be able to smith the guild armors so you can enchant them yourself.

If that is the same one as mine, I made a mental note that a High Elf was also a prior victim of that pit; just in case I needed a dead High Elf for any reason.....

Yup. No joke. I think I have also heard ghost-like humans say that before they die.

I was going to follow Hadvar with my orc character, but when the decision came up... why anyone would choose to follow their executioner and not their fellow prisoner in escaping is a mystery to me.

Thor only travels with mage followers as they are most effective in battle on harder difficulties. I used to travel with Illia but since she's OP and always hurts friendlies and start fights with that god forsaken frost spell during main quest missions i let her go. She's glitched, but i don't mind, Marcurio is better anyway and he doesn't attack friendlies.

Besides my characters a nord i don't do stealth i just go in guns blazing everywhere...or um Shout/Sword blazing.

I had to try that out, though. Image IPB

Hadvar himself seemed pretty honorable, but powerless in that situation. I followed him in my Altmer mage playthrough (and my Imperial playthrough, because it seemed appropriate).

It's the same way out of Helgen, and to Riverwood, but instead of the Stormcloak guy's sister helping, it's Alvor, the Blacksmith.

Is great critical charge bugged? I used to hear the drum roll and see "critical hit" on screen. Now I don't hear or see anything.
