I also think that each School of Magic should have its own progression path and outcome with the proper title. This type of coherency would make the role playing experience spectacular for us magic users who will be participating in The College of Winterhold, as I will be.
For instance, I was a Battle Mage and plan on being one again, adhering to that doctrine yet adding flexibility with bows (strategically) and light armor. I used all forms of magic, but my focus, like many, was in Destruction. But as I was advancing through the Cyrodiil Mage's Guild, I obtain odd ranks and titles as I advanced upwards. For instance, I was an Apprentice to start, and that was ok. But later I obtained random names, including Conjurer.
I never focused in Conjuration and only summoned creatures on occasion.
My suggestion and hope: each School has its own rank within the College, three different ranks for each School, and we should be at a rank for 3 or 4 or 5 quests to fully absorb who we are, and when we advance, it'll feel like a bigger payoff and feat.
For instance, if I focus in Destruction, I could start out as an Apprentice of Destruction, then advance to Warlock, then advanced to the highest title of Sorcerer.
Someone focusing in Restoration could start out as an Apprentice of Restoration, go to Caretaker and then advance to the highest title of Healer.
The highest level in Fortification and Alteration could be Wizard, and the highest in Conjuration could be Necromancer.
Yes, Necromancy. Become a Necromancer.
By focusing on different paths and being at a rank longer, it would IMO created a greater sense of role within the guild and purpose of where you're at.
I can only speak for mages or mage leaning characters here, but I would really like if they did that.
