OK, I give...

I have to use magic to push my PC over level 50.

What schools/spells should a brute force Nord focus on, that are (1) useful for exploration and general combat encounters, and (2) are easy to use and level quickly through routine use?

Just asking for some general advice, as magic is not my thing. The only magic I've used outside of Shouts, is Flames (early on, more as a toy and party favor--doesn't appear to level Destruction quickly at all), Candlelight (which got me through Blackreach, but has to be cast half a million times to level a single time), and Conjure familiar.

Any help from the magic masters is appreciated.

Well now I don't know why you would have to use magic to push you over Level 50 in my first playthrough my Fem Breton is Level 58 and don't use magic at all don't even have a perk point in any of the schools.

But if you really must go via magic, which I hate as well, is either Destruction or restoration spells. As that would be my choses. Because at least with Restorations spells you can heal yourself without potions.

You do not have to be a mage to benefit from some aspects of the magic schools. I am not that good with aiming unless it is a bow and I tend to kill ppl that I do not want to when I use Destruction magic so I try to stick with the spells that enhance my play style.

Muffle in the Illusion school. It lvls up Illusion fairly fast and they it helps you not sound like a raging bull entering the arena when coming up on groups in dungeons.

Detect Life outdoors will raise Alteration. It does not notch indoors for some reason and the best place to use it is in the Market areas of Solitude and Riften because the more bodies you detect the more points you get towards notching it.

Fire Rune will raise Destruction in Draugr or Dwemer dungeons planted right on the coffins/entry circles before they pop open will insta blick anything below Wright or Centurion and knock anything above down to a decent killable lvl.

There is an abuse bug with Soul Trap in the Conjuration School you could use but I do not know if it is ok to post the details here but you could search for it.

Any heal spell for the Restoration school will notch that. Heals are always good for you and anyone you bring along.

Eglyntne- Well now will have to admit with my current Daedric bow and the fact that it does close to 500pts of damage plus 46pts of fire damage and Fills a soul gem one thing for which I don't have to worry about is using poisons. I play on master and most are usually dead before the poison gets to them.<G>

I usually 1 hit with my bow as well and only use the poisons on the higher lvl mobs but it is nice to have against Deathlord Overlords, Dragon Priests, Dragons themselves although cannot be paralyzed that Lingering Damage Poison helps bring them down pretty quickly. So there are some uses for it. I read somewhere that ppl were adding Frenzy to their poison but when you one shot stuff most of the time I feel putting Frenzy in a poison is not that successful.

Frenzy the spell is AMAZINGLY hilarious though and my sick twisted side loves using it frequently.

Also if you are using one or two-handed weapons poisons are great because again you do not always get the one shot with them and you are up close and personal so having that extra kick to your hit is very beneficial.

I'm finding most magic on my stealth character to be redundant or unhelpful. Maybe I'm just lazy and don't like switching back and forth between spells, but I wear muffled boots and use Aura Whisper shout for detect life, and poison. This eliminates the need for anything but the occasional heal.

I like Skyrim's leveling. It's intuitive and flexible. You can build any number of playstyles. The only thing I'm careful on is to mix crafting and combat, but this also encourages natural roleplay variety.

Actually I felt the same way until I realized that the Muffle on your boots does not give you total silence like it implies so having the Muffle spell makes you VERY quiet.

And for the fun factor or wanting that nice double sneak bonus having invisibility single or dual cast is nice for sneaking up behind mobs.

Well, you won't be able to kill him there, but you should be able to damage him enough for him to leave...which is exactly how it should work. I remember thinking that I wasn't doing any damage, either. It seemed like my conjured atronach and Ghorbash were able to do more than I was, so I just let them work at it.

Dragonrend only makes a dragon land; it doesn't actually hurt them (at least as far as I've noticed).

well, i've been fighting him for a good 15 minutes, alsmost constantly having him pinned to the ground, and his health doesn't go down at all Image IPB

Eglytine- Well now will have to admit that with spells there is a perk for the muffled so that even with my wearing full plate armor the don't hear me coming till it's to late for them.<G>

Detect life well now if it's moving it's alive. If it attacks you you kill it. plain and simple logic there. Not to menion that there is a shout that will tell whether or not there are enemies around before they attack.

Fire rune and soul trap my Firey Souls bow takes care of that quite nicely. Deals about 500 pts in damage without sneaking and fills a soul gem. Don't matter how far away they are if I can kill them with my bow I can trap their soul. That is provided I've got an empty soul gem handy. And I usually try to keep Azura's star empty.

My weapons need re-charged as quickly because of a perk which I took in enchanting which uses 5% of the creatures soul and fills my weapon.<G> Now this don't count towards humanoid types.

I have used Conjuration quite a bit, as well as Restoration.

Normally I loathe summoning help, but these do not seem to attack Friendly Forces, so it avoids the fog of war issues. And the Resoration perks included bonuses to Magika Regen, extra dmg vs Undead, and restoration of Stamina when healing Health.

Ironically, the aiming for Destruction spells creates many misses for me; wastes lots of Magika that could have gone elsewhere. with the above combo, my archer was able to not pull a bow during most of the Civil War series. And used Dismay Shout to send opposing forces into chaos.

Well than maybe you should explain that to the numerous mages and such for which took one of my daggers to the back or had their throats sliced because of my sneaking up on them. I full plate with using the muffled perk.<G>

Again, I agree with you that there are alternatives that are just as useful. But IF you want to raise those schools of magic but you are not that keen on being a full on magic user and prefer the melee side then those particular spells will help you raise those schools quickly AND are beneficial to your play style. That is all my point was. :)

I encountered a possible bug that would make the Dragon invulnerable when I reloaded any save after clearing the fog. try using a Save when leaving the Divine Lodge.

Eglyntin- Well yes you might have a point there in reartds to raising the stats up quickly in them. I know that they're there if I want to use them. And occoassionally I might use restoration spells on my companion if I'm running with one. So far all I've found is that they get in the way at the wrong times. Or they are right in a door way for which You want to get through.

Ok seriously, I get your point and all but Mages? Really? I find butterflies more difficult to kill than Mages as long as you get in the first shot. But I get what you are saying. The perks are there for a reason but not everyone is going to fill their perk tree with the same things and they are looking for alternatives or outside of the box playing. The guy asked a question and I tried to help. I am not trying to say that is the best way to do things, it is just an alternative.

Well I have to admit I find mages and  foresworn not to be very bright to be honest with you there. I mean after all you Why use a spell up close for which is meant to be used from a distance? Like many of the mages in the game do. I just shout and put them on ice. As for the foresworn I just killed about a dozen of them and took very little damage and this one foreswron idiot comes at me with a lousy dagger. I'm thinking to myself are you serious. I just cut down 12 of your buddies without blinking an eye and you want to use a dagge on me. I torchered him by making him an Ice sculpture. Image IPB

Don't feel bad I've got over 700 hours into the game and 2 play throughs with 2 different characters and I don't remember a place called the Divine Lodge. I must be missing something some where. Wonder whwere its located at?

I think the Bard's are screwing with me. I left Breezehome last night and a courier ran up handing me a letter from "a friend" informing me that I should investigate Dead Men's Respite and discover its source of power as it's related to the Dragonborn. So I got Meeko, saddled up Aela the Huntress and off I went clearing out this dungeon which had a bit of a story involving King Olaf. It was all a bit vague and provided me no answers so I checked the wiki to see if I was missing anything. It seems that the entrance quest for the Bard's College is this very quest, but I've not been there yet nor have I even been to Dawnstar. How dare they send me letters using me as their personal Draugr killing machine. I've a good mind to go and wipe them off the map.

Is anyone else annoyed that there isn't a chance to side with enemies for all the guilds? I mean they let you side with Maro but why can't i join Mjoll and cleanse Riften or side with the Silver Hand and purge Skyrim's Werewolves?

I went to Hob's Fall Cave to retrieve the Helm of Winterhold, and stumbled upon Pantea's Flute. I went ahead and grabbed it (I haven't accepted that quest from Pantea yet), but I wonder if that will bug her quest later...hmm.

Also, I never did find out who "a friend" is, did anyone else?

I like the TG and DB, and don't really care much about wiping out werewolves, personally. It's not like there are many out in the wild. Actually, in over 300 hours, I haven't seen a single one out in the wild, aside from the Hircine quest, and a couple in Silver Hands cages.

Personally, if I could wipe anyone out, it would be Delphine and Esbern.

Unfortunately, there's a bug where you might not be able to return the flute to Pantea if you found it before getting the quest, and there's a bug with all the quest items for the Bard's College where they remain in your investory even when the quests are completed.

Technically, it's no one - simply the radiant AI guiding the protagonist towards a particular location. I once got a letter from "a friend" from the Dawnstar Sanctuary, prior to completing the Dark Brotherhood Questline, so unless that "friend" is a ghost...

This happened to me...but only when I typed in Kill in the console command on him because I didn't want to do the whole battle (which I doubt you did). You can't kill him at that stage and instead it makes his health static.

^ I did find on one of the wikis that there's a bug with that quest,

"During this quest, if a player attacks Alduin before the initial speech to the player is completed, a bug may occur in which the player can no longer deal damage to Alduin, regardless of attacks."

You might want to reload it and try again; not sure you have a choice.

Ulfric Kitty is still way more BAMF than that weenie Tullius.

Random note about stealth characters- don't forget when you've changed Aura Whisper out for Fus Ro Dah or whirlwind sprint. Cuz that's a bummer.
