They're automatically hostile to the player and they kill innocent civilians out of some warped sense of justice for what Ulfric did.

Yes what Ulfric and his men did was deplorable, especially to that prisoner's daughter. But that doesn't excuse nor justify killing innocent civilians simply out of some antiquated notion of "Blood must be repaid with blood. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a limb for a limb, and a body for a body."

Because then it never stops. The cycle of violence would just continue, and they'd probably still keep on killing people even after they took their home back. If a Nord simply wanted to rest in the city, they'd probably kill him because he's a Nord thinking he might be spying on them.

And technically, they invaded the Dwarves' home first. Just because the Dwarves aren't there anymore doesn't mean it isn't still their home.

EDIT: Also, I'm trying to rescue a priest that they kidnapped.

@Ethereal, the only person we know who was involved in some way was Jarl Igmund. No information is provided about Ulfric or the Empire's role in the executions, and the Bear of Markarth is factually inaccurate based on accounts from people in Markarth.

Hmmm... yea we definitely do know that Jarl Igmund and his men were involved, as they arrested Braig and cast him into the prisons after executing his daughter.

I haven't read the Bear of Markarth before, nor can I remember what the people of Markarth said.

I've gone back to playing my first character, a male Nord Warrior-Mage called Atheldred. Getting very close to level 50 now and I think once I hit that I'll head off to do the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller and then go through the rest of the main questline.

I just encountered the most disturbing thing I have found in Skyrim so far. I went to a place called Forelhost, the last bastion of the Dragon Cultists. When they were beseiged they apparently sealed the place up as best they could and killed themselves, using poison. It's not a particularly clear screenshot but...

I think I'm going to go back to my thieves guild character, stealing from rich people is less disturbing than this.

@Ethereal, the book contradicts what the people said, which is that the Empire and Igmund offered religious freedom to reclaim the Reach, luring people like Ulfric to join the militia. I can sympathize, but they seem to be focused on killing Nords simply for being Nords. And anyone else who gets in their way.

Having gotten 100 speech, it seems the intimidation option for the guard doesn't work. My experiment has concluded. Now I feel like using my ebony dagger to rectify the problem.

Finally got my Smithing up to 80. Now that I have my Ebony armor, I'll wait until I've improved/enchanted it enough to be as effective as my modified Orcish Armor.
On Topic:
As loathsome and despicable Ulfric's actions were, the Forsworn's mindset of killing every Nord in Reach is NOT justified.

Why do people seem to take the claims made by the Bear of Markarth seriously when the denizens of Markarth contradict them? Even Jarl Igmund contradicts what is stated in the book with his revelation about the militia. I wouldn't take the book's claims on Ulfric to be accurate on its own merits, especially when Jarl Igmund was in control of Markarth by the time the executions started (if the prisoner was honest about the story involving his daughter turning to the Jarl, of course).

What you say maybe true but have you ever tried to walk near that camp? After all anyone for which they see they attack on site. So if it's between me or the foresworn who do you think it's going to be that walks away? It sure not going to be the Foresworn. Besides if it was Ulfric than why aren't they concentrating thier efforts on taking him out instead of other innocent folks that had nothing to do with it?

I just jumped behind some Thalmor and electrocuted them to death...then blasted the last one with a long range lightning bolt.

I felt the same way after I completed once of the last Mage quests. The one where you find some interesting things about Savos, recover the staff and beat down the Dragopriest. Just as you're leaving, a Thalmor agent comes to gloat about how you're going to go down. Needless to say, my Breton was not impressed and in a really bad mood. He went down in a massive bolt of sparks.

I think no one notices who it's written by or the ass-kissing tone.

We allowed them to worship Talos, in full violation of the White-Gold Concordat with the Aldmeri Dominion (which recognizes the elven belief that Talos, as a human, cannot be one of the Divines). In jeopardizing the treaty that so many sacrificed for during the Great War, the Empire was wrong. But what choice did they have, I ask you? Against the Bear of Markarth, Ulfric Stormcloak, "no" is not an answer.

What choiiice did we haaaaave?  /whine

Draugr tombs are not "homes".  If you live in a draugr tomb, you're either:  1) Already dead;  2) Tresspassing;  3) Tomb Raiding; 4) Crazy; 5) a fugitive criminal who's decided to set up a base of operations... in a Draugr tomb(!)  (see #4).

Either way, your life is fair game.  Besides, Foresworn are about the most annoying pests you can encounter in  Skyrim.

Hmm... well I'll still consider it as something that possibly happened, but I'd need someone to actually corroborate what the book said. Someone that lived during that time period and saw this stuff happen firsthand, which IIRC none of the Forsworn in prison do.

And since none of the citizens say anything to support it, everything leans more towards it never having happened, or if it did it happened without Ulfric's knowledge.

So...

I've been avoiding this Thread like the plague since so many people have played through once already and I am having so much fun I don't want to read anything about what I might find out in the wilds of Skyrim!

Funniest thing that's happened to me so far is I encountered a Giant outside of Whiterun and didn't realize he would greet me so violently...got one whack from his club and my Redguard (only Level 7) flew an amazing distance...the animation was hilarious!

I encountered my first Stable, but I can't see wanting to use a Horse...has anyone ridden and found it useful? Does it help in Battle?

I pretty much ignore horses at this point.
Some have shown up in the middle of nowhere and I walk on by.
Because you can run faster than a horse.  You don't have to dismount yourself to fight and you don't have to pay 1000 septims to use yourself because you died attacking everything that comes close to you.

I'm torn on the issue of horses. They have benefits and downsides that almost balance out completely.

Benefits:

1) They're a godsend to have when you've just a cleared a few dungeons and you're overencumbered, and the next town is miles away. (can't fast travel when you're overencumbered.... can't run either) But with a horse, you can do both.
2) They're much better climbers than you are. Those steep inclines that you can't do on foot? Your horse can.
3) Your horse most certainly CAN sprint faster than you. And infinitely longer, too (no having to watch your stamina bar). They can jump higher, as well


Downsides:

1) Can't sneak when you're on a horse
2) Can't fight when you're on a horse
3) Often times your horse gets in the way during outdoor battles, and aside from Shadowmere, they really can't hold their own in a fight later on.
