Benefits:
1) They're a godsend to have when you've just a cleared a few dungeons and you're overencumbered, and the next town is miles away. (can't fast travel when you're overencumbered.... cant run either) But with a horse, you can do both.
2) They're much better climbers than you are. Those steep inclines that you can't do on foot? Your horse can.
3) Your horse most certainly CAN sprint faster than you. And infinitely longer too (no having to watch your stamina bar)

1) never even considered that.  Because I'm freaking rich and I don't worry too much about the loot.  If I start carrying too much and I don't have my pack mule errr I mean Lydia than I'm just going to drop something heavy that I don't need.  Money isn't an issue no matter how you slice it.
2)  You'd be surprised what you can jump around on.  If I can't reach it on foot then I'll take the scenic route.
3)  I tested it out and the infinite sprinting isn't all that big a deal we do have fast travel (unless you disabled it through mods like I did) and stamina does come back very fast so no biggie.  As far as I see it I[/b] rather be able to defend myself then having to dismount or hope I can run away from it.

Overlooting (and hence overencumbrance) is not really an issue, There are very few items worth looting especially as Rockworm said later on when you have money like a Wall Street banker.

Oh I still loot (can't help that)  I just ignore heavy items unless its an upgrade to my current gear.
Besides I have tons of crap in my various houses from loot I couldn't sell because the shops ran out of money.

Horses sound like they would be a lot more useful if you could fight from them. I see the upsides like being able to fast travel when overloaded...especially at my low level...but at the early point in the game I'm at there is still lots to find by walking around...bagged a Moose yesterday and found the antlers came in useful...

Wow, I've got a lot of Game ahead of me!

What's the highest Level anyone has finished a playthrough at so far? And any news on DLC?

I dissed the use of horses, but when I got Shadowmere I did start to depend on him. You can get around faster and they can go places you can't. But it's a pain to hop on and off to fight or pick flowers.

Of course, Shadowmere is Shadowmere.  He also fights like a champion.

I haven't completed the main quest yet, but my first playthrough as a Dunmer thief/archer lasted around 200 hours on "master" difficulty setting, just doing the beginning of the main quest, about half the Thieves Guild quests, collecting shouts, a few daedric artifacts, etc. and becoming Thane of Whiterun and Solitude. I got to level 45 and started a new character because it felt like the character was getting to be a bit overpowered.

For my second playthrough, with a 2-handed Nord barbarian type, I finished the civil war on the Stormcloaks side, and I've done most of the Companions quests plus a little more of the main quest. I've been playing this character about 150 hours and I'm at level 30 now. I will probably put this character on hold soon and start a mage character.

I really enjoyed the civil war questline, but I would recommend to start it when you are low level. At high level (above 20) it becomes a little bit too easy IMO. The little bit of the main quest that I have done so far is great, kind of mind blowing. Much more interesting than Oblivion's main quest.

I still haven't done any of the College of Winterhold, Dark Brotherhood or Imperial Legion quests. (saving these for future playthroughs)

Horses are fun, perhaps more for roleplaying and mountain climbing purposes. Once you start using one, you become attached to him.

Wait you guys actually bother to buy horses?
I usually just steal one from a stable when I'm trying to get to a quest location I can't travel too.
Base sneak is usually high enough to get away with it anyway....
Ah well, thats just me I suppose.

Who said anything about buying a horse? I've got the best horse in the game shadowmere and believe me that horse isnt afraid of nothing including taking on dragons and giants alike. He'll eve go up stairs to get at enemies.<G> First playthrough for which I used a horse and I will contimue to use shadowmere with other playthroughs that I do.

I've got lots of crap in my various houses as well that I've slowly been getting rid of. Got the riverwood trader and he's always got 10k in gold for buying things. And then you've got the the smith in whiterun and her husband that have 1500 gold each. So I don't have a problem with them not having gold.

How many house you've got. I've got 4 right now and working on the 5th one.

I generally have that mindset, but...Ya need to do alot of running around to get Shadowmere in the first place, so....Horse stealing time!
Unless your on PC anyway.

Edit: How do you guys get so rich? I have trouble topping 2k.

Nothing wrong with running around for a bit til you get shadow mere. Get to find areas like foresworn  and bandit camps and wipe them out and loot them of all their valubles and sell them.

What do you spend your money on? As for me when I start a new game I don't buy nothing at all. I use what ever I loot and sell what I don't need. This includes weapons, potions arrows etc. and I mainly do this by doing all outside exploring and building up my gotd. making runs to towns to sell everything off from time to  time.; wash rinse, and reapeat. Within no time I've got enough money that I can buy the house in Whiterun which is about 13k fully decorated with a alchemey table. Then I go out and hit the wide open world some more gathering all the ingridents for which I can find and gather. And start making all the potions for which I can from all the indgridents for which I've collected. Most of which I'll never use so I sell them all them.

Just by doing what little I've done above I've not only started replenishing the gold for which I spent on the house but I've also start raising up my alchemy and speech craft. Once I've uncovered all the mines I start hitting them and making Iron weapons and armor upgrade them and start selling them. Now your working on your smithing and speech perks raising them up and making more gold. And this is before I've done any real exploring.<LOL> Right now I've got 4 houses fully furnished, Shadowmere, around 300k in gold and countless gems both  regular and flawless.

I couldn't agree with you more. Heck they attack everyone on site. Even if your just walking by and not posing a threat to them.

Rage do you buy a house as soon as you can? Like the house in whiterun or do you wait for a while? As for me I try to buy the house in Whiterun and fully decorate it as quickly as possible. As it gives me a place to store excess crap and I get access to an alchemy table as quickly as possible.

Does anyone else try to buy a house as soon as possible Or do they put it off for a while?

In an unmodded, un-console-cheated game, money is tight early on.    Period.  The braggards are lying to you if they ever claim otherwise.

However, later on it isn't.  Right about the point where your crafted gear surpasses anything you could ever buy, you will find yourself making a lot more money than you will ever spend.

I have some 3k when I reach Riverwood after escaping Helgen and selling what I looted there plus the exploring on the way to the village. After that is just multiplying it.  hehe

First quest is always Golden Claw, which is a rich one, after I explored a lot nearby Riverwood-Helgen-Falkreath and sold everything that is not pinned down. Stores replenishe their funds the next day and resting is good for my characters. I usually get to Whiterun around level 17-20 with some 20k gold and a chest full of expensive loot  I couldn't sell and all ingredients I gathered. So yes, I buy the house in Whiterun and fully decorated it immediately as it becomes available.

We have a free house right at the start in Riverwood. Galdur's or Alvor's, depending who we followed to the Mill Village. They will give us some free supplies and we can use their chests to store anything we want. Plus, getting a packmule... err, companion, right away, helps a lot with the looting.

The exception for me was my Pure Mage but that was a choice I made. She collected more money than all my other characters combined but she spent it all in books, equipment, potions, all the time. She went to Whiterun at level 10 with some 300 gold in her pockets only. And then, after a little exploring and fundraising, she purchased the house and went off to the College. Arrived there at level 14 and it is the most expensive path ever.

All Adept, Expert and Master Robes of Destruction plus training and all the books of all schools that were becoming available costed a lot, I mean a real obscene lot of money! She's now a level 48 Archmage and she's still spending a ****load of gold in any spell tome she can get and that really makes her happy. She never had more than 10k together at any time but she's made over 1 million septims. Girls like to spend money like water, I guess.

Ahh, crap! Slaughterfish just swam out of the water and are flying after me! Which totally didn't make me scream like a little girl.
Because I totally didn't get totally terrified of slaughterfish after that thieves guild quest in oblivion where I sat in the dark and blindly wrestled with a giant, boat eating slaughterfish.....Nosiree.
*Cough*

@Yrkoon/Redneck1st Ah, gotcha, thanks for the the info!

Now I'm working on deciding my next playrthrough of the game and I'm curious as to something. I seen mentioned here about doing a quest for the Argonian thats on the Riften docs something about returning an item and you get a permanent 15% increase to your smithing Does anyone know if this stacks with the 20% from the warrior stone or the 15% from the lovers stone?

From the wiki.

"The Ancient Knowledge perk is currently bugged; The armor bonus does not only apply to Dwarven Armor, but enhances armor rating from ALL heavy AND light armor types, rather than to only dwarven armor; This commonly leads to the assumption that the effect doesn't work at all, since the way one expects to see the change of the armor bonus is by comparing armor rating before and after equipping different armors – this assumption is incorrect because the armor bonus is still applied, even if it is doesn't apply correctly. In addition, instead of increasing the rate at which the Blacksmithing skill increases, it increases the Blacksmithing skill by 15 points."

Hope that helps!

I don't use the console commands in order to get gold. Heck stick around close to a town doing lots of the stuff around there and going back to town selling it and repeating and you'll have gold quick enough. Also I don't buy anything for which I don't have to buy. Any upgrades to armor or weapons is from whatever I find till I can craft my own.

Alrighty, I lucked out and found a turn undead axe on my little level six Spellsword. (I think, I generally avoid pressing that level up button till I'm nearly dead and need a in combat heal)
So now I'm getting pretty rich by buying iron ingots for daggers, then enchanting and selling them~
Edit: Uh, do the guards in your games have a tendency to smelt and use the forge randomly?
They just started doing that on mine.

2) Can't fight when you're on a horse
3) Often times your horse gets in the way during outdoor battles, and aside from Shadowmere, they really can't hold their own in a fight later on.

I'd roll with a horse because imo the benefits outweigh the downsides. If you do end up finding enemies, you can just run away on your horse.

Hell I bring Aela along and she ends up fighting off the enemies I come across when I'm on a horse. Usually just Wolves or Thalmor.

Of course, you could always turn into a Werewolf, which I believe adds 1300 to how much you can carry (something I recall reading on the ES wiki). Though it doesn't really matter how much it adds as you can't loot anyone anyway, and if you do go Werewolf keep an eye out for villages or cities so you can wait an hour and transform back. But you'd be able to sprint again even after being overencumbered.

Just.... don't fast travel on a horse from Meridia's Shrine. Before you know it you'll be 25 feet in the air falling and your horse will die upon hitting the ground.

I would strongly caution against this for a new player, myself, I think on first playthrough it would ruin the game for me - but YMMV. :P
