Oh and Destruction really does feel lackluster. Runes barely tickle the Draugr and I need to unload a whole volley to kill just one..... it's night and day if I manage to backstab one (with no perks in 1handed, skill around 20... and Assasin's Blade, of course :) ). Not to mention fighting bosses... was running like a headless chicken during the Bleak Fall Barrow end Draugr Lord fight. Had to hide, heal & recharge, then re-engage like 6 times (and numerous reloads), before finally claiming the victory.

On the upside just got Impact, so maybe this will improve things. Also working towards achieving Adept Destruction level spells... but the damage figures don't seem to scale a lot... well at least there's the AOE, let's see.

I think Destruction is underrated.  I'm starting to tip again where it's not doing so much damage, but that's where Conjuration and Illusion come in.  Impact plus double charging your spells helps, and enchanting.  The bummer about mages is that you have fewer slots for buffs than people who use weapons do.  Can't wait for the mod that will let you wear more than one ring.  You do have to kite a lot.  Summons will take some pressure off.  When I get the dual summon perk, it will be nice to have a whole posse.  All the magic schools level so darn slowly, though.

I'm playing a mage/ spy, too, but built the magic up first and just now gave her some assassin perks.  She's more honest than my DB/ TG character.  It's kind of nice not to be ripping people off.  Poor Brand-Shei, he will get to stick around this game.

I think I read somewhere that it was!  I should watch that again, too.  Great movie.

Still haven't finished TW2 myself.  I found it fun, but overall a love/hate relationship.  I'd be thinking how great a story was and then 5 minutes later fiddling with menus and saying "god I hate this game."

I made the decision not to use summons. Yea, I'm making it harder for myself, I know. But I want to keep things nice and quiet, without the noisy summons. Plus the enemies are supposed to die by my blade/spells (or Frenzy, in a pinch). That way I also get to train more. Plus I really don't have spare perks for Conjuration in my build plan. I'm wondering if I will be able to afford investing in Restoration Magicka Regeneration and cheaper Fast Healing some day.

I think that The Witcher 2 is a pretty awesome game on its own. I definately like it a lot and will play it again in the Dark mode someday.
That said, I find it hard not to compare it with TW1. And when you compare these two games, things no longer look so rosey. The fact is TW1 was a much richer game, with much thicker atmosphere, more alive and rich gameworld. Even towns in TW2 are tiny compared with Vyzima. There was much more freedom and exploration in TW1.
And many more, varied landscapes and locations. Also many more monster types.
Already the beginning of TW1 (village outside Vyzima) was dripping with heavy atmosphere. Then the plot thickened, it became a city adventure mostly (much more so then DA2 ever was) and then came Act IV and the pace of the game totally changed again. The fields were beautifull... and the Noon/Midgnight Wights inspiring. Later being knighted with the Aerondight by the Lady of the Lake was one of the most epic moments in my gaming ever.

Alchemy and reagent acquisition in particular has been painfully "streamlined". Whatever happened to books? They were my primary expenditure in TW1, as the knowledge about different monsters and herbs they contained was invaluable (to learn their strenghts & weaknesses, but it was also necessary to acquire reagents). In TW2 the books are almost useless... well sure, they give some leads on strenghts&weaknesses, but you can do perfectly well without them.
Game systems... for an RPG game both are pretty bad actually. But I did enjoy character building in TW1 more (except for the fact that you could almost max everything and the 3 fighting styles x2 were horribly redundant, while still absolutely necessary - and for no logical reason). Alchemy was more usefull for a non-alchemy specialist (cost of specializations in TW2, I guess), as were the oils and poisons... these things played a bigger role and were more necessary, I felt.
TW2 has a pretty bad system, the perks are uninspiring, though granted, at least it forces some sort of specialization. Combat flow is obviously better in TW2... but way too aracde-y for my liking. I would hope for something else in an RPG then all this rolling around and thrusting. Something between Risen, Gothic 3 and Skyrim perhaps?

Crafting in TW2 was a good idea on paper, but didn't work well in practice. Overall the entire equipment balance in TW2 makes little sense. I guess partially DLC items are to blame. There was much less equipment in TW1, but at least one felt the progression, improvement that much more. And the end game weapons actually felt damn epic and made you really proud when you got them.

Then there are the menus... nuff said.

Good post, Haplose. I'll add that in TW1 new weapons and armour were very rare. In TW2 you can buy Zerrikanian weapons from a random merchant in a backwater village.

I usually never say this, but the entire game smells off dumbing down for console. At least it looks great if you have the hardware for it.

Also, I was waiting for this thread to reach 666 pages.

I think it was me who said it, when I posted about my first Skyrim video on YouTube, my first Dragon fight, very noobish I was then but still it is a cool vid, I guess.

As for TW2, sure, it has its flaws and I think UI is the worst but it's not worse than Skyrim's and just like it, once we get used to it, I don't really notice it. It flows pretty well then.

I agree with Haplose about TW1. I miss all those crypts and its inhabitants that give me the goosebumps everytime! It had more variety indeed but I honestly think TW2 is an evolution. Thing is that it is already 17GB the way it is. To have all the small details that made TW1 great with the same TW2's engine, I'm afraid it would require another 2 DVD's! hehe

Now, I've just finished crafting my first complete Set, available only in Dark Mode and OMFG, it is awesome. It scared the **** out of me when I first drew my weapon, being a cursed set and all (but once complete it makes us "invincible" in its description, at least).

As for the books, I grab and read all I can. The Monster Lore is good from books. Increases our damage and let us complete some quests. True, the knowledge can also be gained by fighting those monster types but it is a cool feature. TW1 might work well with the same "learn the hard way". Collecting ghouls ingredients for that crazy Kalkstein in the Prologue would be impossible without a book even if we had killed 500 of them already. And the books were so expensive for a new char and not always spawned in some loot we could find.

But the best thing about the Witcher 2, imho, besides the combat (I played so many runs through Hardcore before patch 2.0.. It is awesome to stay alive all the way and well, it's very very challenging and punitive when we do not!), the best thing for me is the Journal.

Dandelion is such an awesome writter in the end, much better than he is a singer! hehe All entries in the Journal are written "by him" and it adds some really special flavour to the game. I just love reading them all!

I'm kinda alternating now. When I die in TW2, I play Skyrim and vice versa, although it is a lot harder to die in Skyrim now. My pure Mage is doing so great at level 58 that she hasn't actually died in a long time. =)

I don't know.  I've got mixed feelings about The Witcher 2.  First off, I never played the first one, so I can't compare.  But I can say that   Witcher2 came out at the perfect time for me.    After DA2  failed me,  I was *starving* for a good RPG.    TW2 hit the spot.  I'd rank it as a great game for that reason alone.  I also  liked how uncompromisingly sexy and raw it was.  It was  liberating, if you'll pardon the cliche.

But....  That's all.  Looking back... it's an unusually short game  (I can do a full  playthrough  in one weekend if I want).  And despite how brilliantly it does  its story  (the Chapter 2  quest fork.   Mindblowing!) and a few other, minor,  gameplay features, it is a terribly restrictive game all around, and doesn't lend itself to multiple replays as a result, inspite of  how mutable the plot is.

That leaves  me with 2 games that I can safely say will entertain me for years to come:  DA:O (and all of its little addons) and Skyrim.

Random question, does anyone know if it is possible to attend Vittoria Vici's wedding WITHOUT killing her or joining the Dark Brotherhood?

I'm not sure she even  has a wedding unless you're in the Dark Brotherhood.

But I do know that you don't have to kill her when she does. When you're sent to assassinate her, just show up and.... don't do it.  And the wedding will  go off without a hitch.

So many npcs put hits out on me and I can do nothing about it.  On a brighter note, I got absolutely sick and tired of the enchanter mage telling me (the Archmage) that  I'm not as dumb as I look.  I killed him and paid Tofldir 500 septims to continue doing business with the College.

If you had only waited a few College of Winterhold quests you could've saved yourself the trouble.

Ah... nothing like a good new TW2 run to remember how awesome that game is and to take a sweet and deserved break from Skyrim. v2.1 Dark Mode... a hell lot more challenging than anything Skyrim can throw at us!

I have a few games that are 9/10 for me but only three really than are 10/10. DA:O, Skyrim and TW2! So beautiful, so challenging, so hot! heh

Skyrim has a slightly advantage for me, mainly due to the Dragons movement. That's how Dragons should fight and move. It reminds me so much of Reign of Fire that I could bet it was the inspiration for the Dragons. Going to watch it again! hehe

TW2 now that there was nother great game as well. I am going to have to go in and play that one again soon. As for Reign of Fire I love that movie

Yes but if you don't kill her don't it mess up the DB quest line. I usually just kill her never done it without killing her. Image IPB

I dont find destruction useless if I use the Marked for Death shout.

Mostly I stun mooks while Lydia cuts them to pieces with Dawnbreaker.
The "On fire" debuff that it adds, coupled with Firebolt stuns really renders most mobs pathetic.

Especially when you open with an adept level blast.

Which nets you a free conjuration spell and Keening.

My squee was both long and loud when I found that.

My guess is that the quest marker will remain on her until you complete the assassination.  It'd be funny if the Argonian gets tired of waiting and steals your kill.

It's the same with the Emperor's ship. It seems all rushed and you're told that his ship leaves that evening, but as far as I know, if you don't kill him his ship remains there throughout the game. It sucks. Would've been nice to fail an assassination.

So my mage-assasin is progressing pretty nicely. Level 20 so far, finally got the silent casting perk.

Boy it's way harder then the two-handed warrior. But also more satysfying and fun. Most humanoid and beast enemies I can handle with Calm and/or Frenzy. But I'm seriously struggling against atronachs and Draugr. Probably automatons too, but haven't fought any recently. I guess my sneak skills are still too low (around 55, Stealth 1/5) to approach an enemy from front... and sometimes they directly face the door/corridor/bridge. Also surprisingly enemy mages rip me apart even faster then they used to kill my warrior.. but fotunately I tend not to give them the chance.
Guess I will need to work on my enchanting more and get some Elemental/Magic Resist. Evenmoreso that I will probably start encountering dragons now.

Oh and Destruction really does feel lackluster. Muffle + enchanted stealth gear.  Tell your noisey companion to wait if there is an important enemy you need to surprise.  Higher leveled enemies will most likely see you anyway unless approaching from directly behind until your stealth score is in the 80s.  The throw voice shout can help.

I like the concept of illusion spells but you have to invest a zillion perks to avoid the dreaded "X is too powerful for..." and it doesnt help vs dragons and deathlords.

Has anyone seen  These in the game?  I know that the Coffin Button that opens the secret passage  to the Ratway Cistern  is shaped like the first symbol.  But I sure as hell haven't seen the others.

Yeah, but they are kind of hard to see unless you are really looking for them.  There is sign on the house near the gate in Whiterun.

Yes, they're in lots of places.  I first noticed one in Solitude.  Ironically it was on my thief and she was about to break into Erikur's house before noticing he had a "protected" mark.  It worked, I left his house alone.  Honor among thieves.  Image IPB

After she married Balimund I wished you could make your own shadowmarks.  I got a job from Delvin to cook Bali's books and had to give it up and listen to Delvin's lecture about making the guild look bad.  If the guildmaster's spouse doesn't get a protected mark, I don't know who should.

Then scolding her like she's some noob and not the guildmaster.
