It doesn't. But I've yet to play as an ash pile-making mage anyway, so I have no personal test results. But just a brief perusal of the tech forums at Bethesda's boards makes it clear that it's aparently an issue for lots of players, on multiple platforms.Aradace wrote...

Well I don't know about it. Haven't tested that... well maybe I will in a few levels, when I get Destruction a bit higher. But looking at spell descriptions in the wiki, it seems they have to specifically call for the effect in order for it to activate.
It doesn't seem to apply to Lightning Rune and Lightning Cloak, for example. So I kind of doubt this would work.
Kind of feared as much. Oh well lol.

I did use it during the civil war and got a kick out of saying: IM A FIRIN MAH LAZZERRR!!!
It just came out but it is fitting when using that spell.
I think I will master conjuration next.
My goal is to level all the spells so I can do all the master level quests.
So that you know I actually have a good reason for feeling like the arch mage.

What is up with couriers not wearing clothes anymore? The last TWO that ran up to me over the weekend with messages were only wearing a loincloth, boots, and a hat.
Also, I got to see J'Zargo without a hood (he equipped a tiara...err, circlet). In addition to the extra suave facial hair, he's got a heck of a mane.

-Bandits stationed atop fort walls will take potshots at couriers who are passing by. And kill them in one hit.
-Then, when you loot said courier, you'll find a vaguely written letter from one anonymous party to another, vaguely discussing one party's frustration at the other party's inability to secure some unspecified treasure contained in a cave somewhere near Whiterun.
It's all very vague. Makes you wish people would learn to send more specific missives via courier. It's not hard, citizens of Skyrim. Let me show you how it's done:
To: Jack, of the Solitude Bard's College
From: Yrkoon, of Riften
Dear Jack,
14 days ago, I hired you to travel to Shimmermist cave, just northeast of Whiterun, and recover 10 falmer ears, 238 gold, 3 flawless amethysts, and an Ebony Mace of Burning. What's taking you so long? Do I have to go clear that cave out myself? Please write back with an update on your progress, or I'll hire one of the Companions in Jorvaskar to do the job instead.
--Yrkoon.
^See that? Clear, specific, concise.

I mean I was tossing lightning around and using a dragon on those poor Stormcloaks.
I mean yeah it was war and all...but I kind of wonder if killing over 200 people in such a short order really would not affect someone.
Although Odahviing probably had the time of his life what with trashing a couple forts, and an army or two.

Destruction Master level spells are a gigantic let down.
Blizzard does nothing.
Fire Storm takes WAY to long to charge.
Also Lightning Storm is easily interrupted.
Its just like....why are spells that are lower on the totem so much better?
Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Firebolt, and Ice Storm remain very handy spells while the master ones do not.
Yeah, agreed - I think Ice Spike with dual cast+impact is one of the most useful spells in the game, it's always nice to see how many things are slowed down by it, and you can just cast duals of it forever like firebolt, which I prefer to meatier fire spells for the same reason - and flames up the backside make short work of dragons up close
That said, it's when you augment them with spells from other schools that things work out really well I think - judiciously applied Impact in combination with a couple of atronachs, stoneskin and bound sword for instance.
In a way, the desire for extra damage makes the "obvious choice" school of spells for battle (and I bet we do mostly tend to go for Dest first for offensive casters) something you branch out from and add to. It sort of balances out Destruction, because two or three uber dest spells would make for quite monotonous play.

Shame that it gets stopped by a single power attack.
I really hate the charge time though since no other spells need it in the school.
But ah well power up let downs are kind of common.

I use Illusion for every character now, regardless of build. It's mostly just habit - I cast Muffle constantly, shout a little (Marked for Death), cast Frenzy if there's a group, then come in with my mace or sword blazing to clean up the stragglers.Uinen03 wrote...
I've barely cast any spells, so far. :/ Aside from illusion, which I use every now and then. I may create a Nord mage... Right after my Argonian warrior!I
lizard people!
I also find myself using Alchemy and Enchanting a lot lately:
Why sell an improved weapon for a few septims, when you can make a ton of cash by simply enchanting it with Absorb Health, or whatever tickles your fancy, then selling it?
And why enchant at whatever level you are at, when you can brew a potion to enhance it?
If you decide to keep the weapon, why use just the enchantment, when you can apply your own poison to it?
It's a vicious cycle, and I'm hooked. And rich.

Inquiry: The Amulet found at Saarthal seems to have boosted my Magika usage far more than 3%, but it does have a limit. If Disenchanted, will this effect be able to be added to a new item? Will this superior effect hold?
Note: While fighting a magic tossing Undead, in one reload, it was conjuring Frost elementals thru solid walls at my character. This lead to me trying to do the same in another attempt with Fire elementals, and it works.
FWIW; it won both tries, and I went with a Shout/ DW Spark combo with potion chasers FTW.
Thought I would ask again on a new page....
My Dark Elf mage was going as a Destructionist; very frustrating for play, and ended up using Illusion and Conjuration much of the time instead.
This current Breton mage is going to take perks from several Schools, and play as a generalist. And I may take the Destruction perks that only boost the Novice spells, as I am unable to aim Ice Spike and others very well at all. Thus far, and with Archery as an alternative long range solution, is far less problematic. And way more fun!

I do the same.
I maxed out Enchanting and Smithing. Enchanted weapons DID sell for a LOT more! My character is filthy rich, as well!

I haven't maxed out the Alchemy tree yet; in fact, I usually use just a couple of points for Alchemy perks, but it's worth it for stronger potions. They can save you in a pinch.
I've been using Alteration in my current playthrough; it's actually quite handy. I mostly use it for the Oak/Stone/Ironflesh spells right now, but I'm looking forward to using Paralyze.

This is something that the Companions missed out on.
The Theives and the Mages both let you do master level stuff and get some cool quests.
Nothing like that for the companions.

I tend to stock up on better armours and jewllery when I'm exploring and collect a load of soul gems from animals, enchant them and then sell the armour for nice shiny gold, and I get my enchantment up to boot.
I've not decided whether to go for alchemy or archery with the perks yet my skill level on archery is fairly high at 80, but as I've nearly maxed out theenchantment, single handed, heavy armour and smithing skills, although not taken all the perks, I'm considering mixing things up a little and selecting archery.

Remember to fight dirty ;P
I liked using the Time Stop shout until I had the whole leading them thing down pat, and since I was investing heavily into Alteration for the mage armor and magicka protection perks when I picked up Paralyze it...was...on. I love Deathlords standing at attention and falling to the ground like planks. Very easy to hit that way too ;P
Illusion is very, very nice for long range magic sniping as well when you combine spells like Muffle or Invisibility with Quiet Casting. Very easy to line up the opening shot, and with impact you can basically keep thumping them until dead.
Edit: And for the people talking about Destruction damage lacking, don't forget your weakness potions. I'm cool with a campaign for more Mage damage though

Which character are you using the alchemy and enchanting perks on Happy? Although it is a great source of income.

I keep thinking that when I start a new character, I'll change my play style, but honestly, I only end up tweaking and refining the existing style. My pure mage is the only one that deviates from the archer/thief/assassin/mage build I keep ending up with. In my first playthrough, I started as a pure mage, then became a 1-handed spellsword. The only things I've added, or am doing differently by #7 is that I added a shield, more Illusion and Alteration, plus Archery. I always use Enchanting, Smithing, and Alchemy.
I'm not loving light armor anymore, though. This character feels like a pin cushion compared to my last character - a Nord 2-handed warrior, that wears heavy armor. And it seems like Smithing is taking forever to level up. *sigh* Maybe it's that I hate all of the light armors, with the exception of any of the TG armors and Dragonscale. The others are just so...meh.

I forgot about Conjuration, as well. I may experiment with that, when I create a mage.
Does anyone know of a decent way to level your speechcraft? I got mine to 75, but now it's taking soooo long to level! D: It seems to only level after I have sold a million potions! XD
