Pleasantly suprised about the marriage thing.

I'm not expecting DA:O quality romances nor am I asking for it.
For me any spouse I have will be nothing more then a prop to add another layer to my PC.

Hmm....friends can go with you into a dungeon...meat sheilds ftw << >>. And bar fights, I'll be the mysterious stranger at the back just watching the show. But the whole friend and relationship thing sounds like it might be neat or like in Fable, where it was largely cosmetic. Not a bad thing really, but I wonder if it can be worked as disscounts for items and buildings, or quests you other wise won't get, or if say you make friends with a North Man and an Imperial, if one of the two won't turn on you.

Plenty of possibilities.

That reminds me. Will there be anything like the mysterious stranger perk from Fallout in Skyrim? Like the Discreet Ranger or something?

Bout all he's good for, that and drowning in the river lol.

Though I admit this game is getting to sound better and better. I'll be first to admit when I first seen it it didn't strike me as being more than another typical RPG, "Woo Dragons" or Corny "Wait I kill dragons by yelling at them?" But with the improvments, added on feats, ability for mods to pop up for us X-box players, and the friends and economic features, I think we all know who will win RPG of the Year now.

I just hope relationships and marriage don't turn into a whole "thing" the way they have around here and with the Fable series. I just hope they remain a small side distraction in the game and don't become an advertising focus like ME and DA's whole "LOOK WHO YOU CAN HUMP!!" approach.

One thing that gets on my nerves is that some people (Not you, of course) look at this game and say that it isn't an RPG but only a mindless hack and slash action game with RPG elements. What qualifies as an RPG now?

With that said, I sure hope it doesn't become Fable 2 or 3 where it is "How many women can you marry without them finding out?!" and only for comic relief plus a quick reputation gain. I want marriages and relationships to be a bit more meaningful, Not like DA or ME though.

Every game is an RPG obviously. Those Halo games, you are masterchief. Sarcasm/end.

I'm guessing you've been to the Skyrim Forums, lol. Every single announcement is treated like it's the death of all Bethesda RPGs and Skyrim will be a Call of Duty clone.

Haha, too true but I have never set foot in Beth's forums. I'm just getting too worked up over a bunch of ignorant trolls :)

Lol wow really, they do that? I mean, Elder Scrolls and Fallout and such as they are now, are pretty much the new RPG style. I just think some people are too stuck with say FF6, BG, or Morrowind to see that the tech has changed and those old style games were needlessly clunky. But Skyrim, not an RPG? Wow...whats next I'll be told Command and Conquer (older ones at least) weren't RTS games?

This is such a subjective phrase that it should be outlawed.

It may be a subjective concept, but it's hard to argue with S4S when you compare objectively a game that costs $45 and provides 5 hours of entertainment value with a game that costs $60 and provides 500-1000 hours of entertainment value.

I hated Oblivion and don't think it was worth more than ten bucks (I paid 7). The world felt stale. Let us not confuse Personal Worth with Content vs. Price, for they are two different concepts entirely. I get what you are saying, but it's not what I was.

500-1000 of boring, tedious, and unimaginative content is not worth paying $60 for. Alternatively, I'd have paid $45 for Portal, and it was about 7 hours long for me.

Out of curiosity, how much time do you think you ended up spending playing the game?

if you hate a game that much are you actually going to play it for 500-1000 hours?

you have to evaluate how much time you actually played vs. how much money you spent to buy it.

For example, I bought Mount and Blade Warband, but I found the game to be too repetitive and boring, so I stopped playing after about 10-15 hours.

If somebody else loved the game and played it for 100 hours, obviously it has a higher entertainment value for that individual.

there was only one occasion when I sucked it up and powered through a game even though I hated it, just because I already bought it and wanted to get my money's worth. That was Arcania Gothic 4. But I kept hoping it was going to get better.

Very true, naughty.

I played Morrowind twice and also played through the expansions. That was probably ~180 hours for me and I consider it worth it. If someone played and enjoyed Oblivion for 500-1000 hours, that's great, but just because you can play for that long doesn't mean the average player does.

Heck, there are people who've played WoW for 7 years now. If I start the trial, play until level 8, and then drop the game because I dislike the grinding, running around, and lack of real plot/character, telling me that WoW can give me *years* of entertainment doesn't increase the perceived value of the game in my eyes.

Ultimately, how much a game is worth is a personal decision.

Yeah varries from person to person, I did not like Morrowind at all, barely logged more than 12 hours into it, versus over 100 in Oblivion. Same with me loving Fallout three when I had the expansions and all that add on gear that comes with them, versus the game own its on. Hech I noticed from some on here while we all liked the Dark Brotherhood missions we each had our own idea's what the best mission was.

I don't understand why some people think Skyrim isn't an rpg, either.

The cutting of skills and transferral of skills was dome either to A. Prevent abuse in raising attributes, B. Make the skill system more efficient or C. Are still there but have been relocated.

I've been hard on Mass Effect, but The Elder Scrolls have some of the deepest rpg elements, period, in anything modern.

Glad all of us see that :P

I stayed with the main quest for about six hours. I lollygagged for about four.

alternatively, I bought Morrowind for five and racked up three hundred hours.

Cool interview with the design director if anyone's interested. It's more of a development insight than a press release though.

His answer to the last question was quite interesting. With all the talk of player metrics and feedback that goes on in design I do like the idea of a designer just making the game they want to see, games that feel like they've been designed by committees to be all-encompassing can feel a bit generic.
