Fus'ing the alto wine is funny.

I haven't loaded SkyUI myself because I couldn't get the script extender to install- a Win7 problem I assume.

When we raise our flagon to another dead dragon there is just one drink we need.  Nord Mead.

Hahaha.  That's good.

Korrin has now completed the civil war for the stormmcloaks (she believes that this may earn respect and regards her lazy, whining kinfolk with contempt)
She tried on the stormcloak officer armour - she normally looks intimidating ..but this increases that to scary (I think it's the red eyes...)

I then took her back 100 hours to an earlier save and triggered Blood on the Ice for the first time (I think I missed out on it first time because I didn't know where the graveyard was at that point and there is nothing in the game to tell you to head in that way...so I was stuck in a setting where there had been 3 murders but the third victim was still alive)

Dont get me wrong I LOVE Skyrim.
But not a single companion in the game ever said anything this epic:
http://cloud.steampo...8F0AE467ADC0AF/

FONV does remind me of Skyrim though right now since hey on the way to the main quest you can leave an utter trail or RUIN and destruction behind you. Three legion camps, and dozens of scum have fallen, all to two guys and an eye bot.

Damn I planned on playing Skyrim but I guess it can wait.

Personally, my own "Epic statements" are imagined responses to the many NPC blurbs that are running about Skyrim.

"You cannot hide from me!"
"Guess I can!", followed by Death scene.

"You know what is wrong with Skyrim these days?"
"Vagrant bards? Lollygaggers? No delivery service?"

"I am not afraid of you, even if you are my Elder!"
"One day, you will be!

"Have you ever been to the Cloud District? ..."
"Several times, though not on trips while tracking you."

"Are you married?..."
"Not yet, though you should be available soon...." Etc.

I slay me! Image IPB

@ Barbarossa, are you wielding dual axes?

FNV did not strike me as particularly clever in the dialogue writing.  Moreso in the notes/ terminal entries.

As for DLC, I'm depressed at the fact that no matter when it's announced, Xbox gets it a month before the rest of us.

LOL that little   2-year-old graphic is, well, it doesn't apply to ES games. The End Boss in Arena (Jagger Tharne, or some such?) was... Nothing. He was a standard mage that could be cornered and  killed in a few hits.  (he was actually less powerful than some of the  garden variety Undead spell casters you could face much earlier in the game)  And the game constantly gave you messages like "the X is near" whenever you were close to reaching  a dungeon's end boss. And the ending? Has Anyone here actually  played any RPGs from 1994? Cut scenes? HA! No. Slide show presentations? Nope. Dramatic voice actor belting out an epilogue in a booming voice? Nope.

At best you got a  little still shot of a 'peaceful' place, like  a well-lit cabin in the woods (Arena), or a beach front view of the sea with words at the bottom of the screen saying "you saved the world, good job!". At worst, you wouldn't even get that. Just a black screen with  "The End" or "Play again!"

It most certainly does apply. I never played Arena, but I extensively played Daggerfall and for role playing, it is the best of the TES games, IMO. I also played Morrowind and Oblivion extensively (in which I thought Oblivion was a very bad TES game until Skyrim, IMO). It doesn't matter what the end boss does,  in Arena as it has an impact on the story. What do your choices in Skyrim have as an impact on the story or even the plots. I'll tell you now, absolutely nothing. You just run around doing quests, building up skills, gaining XPs that can be added to perks and skills you want to level without consequences to your actions and do anything you please, also without consequences, all the while enjoying thr vistas

Er...  the comic you posted had NOTHING to do with Role playing.  it had to do with Difficulty.  So no.  It doesn't apply.

It's also supposed to represent the static style of gameplay as well. Nothing changes during the game.

But while we're on the subject....

For a person who so railed on the deficienies of DA2 compared to Oriigins and to which I agree, I find this fascinating that you think Skyrim is so amazing??? For RP'ing, DA2 makes Skyrim look bad.

LOL say what?

I just got done with a 200 hour Playthrough of Skyrim where I Roleplayed a Criminal.  And it worked marvelously.  I was  frequently in and out of Prison.   There were bounties on me in every hold.   I was  always on the run and/or in hiding from the  establishment and  even other named NPCs.  I managed to find allies   (other criminals)  to help me gain power and influence.  Again, it was an Amazing playthrough, seemed like Bethesda intended Skyrim to be played precisely in this way.

AND, this was  a stark contrast to my previous playthrough, which was the complete opposite.  I roleplayed a beloved Nord Hero in that one.  Saving everyone I could.  Doing good deeds for a living, becoming a Thane of every city;  wiping out evil influences like the Dark Brotherhood when the opportunity presented itself.  I even made it a point to cut off  Daedric influence wherever I found it.  THAT playthrough worked out perfectly too.

Funny, that.  Perhaps the problem here is that you don't know what  the hell roleplaying actually means.

You call that role playing? Just simply choosing what you want to play and imagining that it has an effect is not RPing, IMO (<---my emphasis). Exactly how do your actions reflect in the game other than choosing a civil war side? At least. somewhat in DA2 (again, I couldn't stand that game), a few your actions have an impact. If using your imagination is what you mean, I won't bemoan that at all, that is fine. But, IMO (<--- I am stressing this here), what you are role playing has no effect in the game's reactions or story, and in that effect, it is terrible; Oblivion, as bad as it was, did better than that.

For example; I play a Nord, and the other Nords call me a foreigner, even though Nords are indignenous to the Skyrim province, whether I played a Mage, Thief or Warrior. I play a Khajiit, and by lore of the game, they are not allowed in the cities as they are considered thieves in caravans, especially by those in Whiterun, but in WR, they talk to me and treat me like I am a human and I get in by simply telling them about the dragon attack on Helgen.

Exactly how does being a "Thane" make a difference other than giving you  pass from commiting a crime and gaining a sidekick? Didn't DAII notice you as the "Champion" when you defeated the Arishok, as well as having a choice of companions that gave you influence, and that actually had meaning to them? I am not defending DAII, but there is a difference here.

Name those other allies you gained that gave you more influence, you can't, I know, I have played the game three time through on three different races using mods as well. The game is simply an action/adventure game with little effect of what you do having any effect on the story or quests. Hell, even the DB quest, once finished, doesn't reflect as you being a murderer. In Oblivion even, if you committed many crimes, you couldn't pray at any of the altars of The Nine Divines to get their blessings, unless you raised your fame. In Skyrim, murder all and any you want, and get those blessings without notice. I guess the gods have now all become generic!.

The game's eye candy and all-out fighting at every turn is what the game offers, and hey, it sells. If that is what Beth has made money on, I cannot deny they hit the jackpot, but it is soemthing I do not care for. I love the graphics and the venturing, but that only goes so far when the actions I do in the game have little meaning to the story, e.g. player agency.

roleplaying is about picking a personality for you character and have the character act out that personality in behaviour and decisions (ie "playing" a "role").
Whether these have any affect on the world is irrelevent (to whether it qualifies as roleplaying).

Player agency is a good thing but not a key part of the definition

That's fine and I agree with that. I have my own definition of what RPing is. If that is how one wants it, and as I stated before, then, that is fine. But my contention is that it plays worse than Oblivon from "my" RPing experience and even that of DAII, of which I could not stand. The Creation Kit is the only thing that makes the game fun, as was the Construction Set to Oblivion. All you are describing is an action/adventure game. Zelda plays like that to be honest. I can imagine playing a sniper in a shooter game, though my class says I am an assault specialist, just because I use a scope of some sorts, I am able to snipe; see what I mean??

For me, I can only go so far with an RPG if my actions in the game itself don't have some sort of consequnce to what I choose to do. Otherwise, the game remains the same outside of my imagination and simply plays like some kind of adventure.

The ban on Khajits in cities is a ban on the caravans because they are (rightly) believed to be Skooma dealers, your Khajit is not with the caravans so unaffected.
I agree race should be referenced more and it was good to have someone in Candleheath moaning about my character being "just what we need, another Dunmer".
Oblivion did have the same problem with race blindness (maybe worse) so one dark elf girl told my dark elf about the history of the Dunmer while one woman told me that she didn't trust the girl because you can't trust Dunmer.
though, I do understand there are people in the real world dumb enough to make racist remarks when speaking to a member of that race and not thinking that they count as being part of that race.

I agree in that RP is more than simply choosing dialogue choices. For myself, the ME series is among the worst at this, as one is lured into choosing a single course (ie; Paragon or Renegade). Games like DA and TOR allow more freedom; one may choose any path based on the Player's intent. Personally, I enjoy these as "should've, would've, could've" thoughtful projections as to what my PC actually did say.

But RP is, and has always been about spurring and useage of the imagination; PnP included. It is much harder to do this in a CRPG, as a single story is often told, making less room for any choice. But RP is not always about choice; it's about playing the role whether be a single tale, or many.

Choices are great, as I love options, and being able to replay a game is a lot of fun for me when it still is fresh. But it is icing, IMO.

There are some flaws in Skyrim's presentation, but I also take notice when things are presented well. And for me, the latter occurs more frequently than the former. After clearing away a dragon, the DB, the Companion's witches, old dig sites as a mage, choosing lycanthropy, etc, the Guards and other NPC's mention these things in passing. I even heard new ref to some things from the Main Quest this past week, and I have been playing for well over 700 hrs.

Now I only have played a minority of races, and have only gone a short distance as another gender, so I have not encountered all the possibilities. So while there may be glitches, there are so many things that do get mentioned, that it is easy to wave at the sleights. Like the passing guards that insult you; sometimes my Orc will approach them in a "What did you say?" kinda way, and see if the next couple of responses change their 'attitude'; works very well for me at RP as intimidating (eg; "That's what I thought you said"), and gives me smiles when moving away. Have yet to kill a guard, too.

Image IPB

Skyrim is eye candy; full of wondermous moments worthy of screenies, but it also has the meat and taters of RP. Now while some may or may not enjoy this stew compared to past servings, I am personally unable to judge, as Skyrim is my first bowl in the sandbox series. And I have posted at the lack of written depth this game has when compared to others, but this does not mean it is any less of of a CRPG; just not as engaging on those terms.

Can you imagine if each of the followers in Skyrim had deep, fleshed out (Err... Don't look at me that way Eola) backstories and quests? As well as unique and colourful personalities? OMG, I would be in heaven. The only thing stopping Skyrim (and the ES games in general) from being perfect IMO is the lack of a strong storyline and deep characters (at least on par with the depth of some Bioware and Obsidian characters).

The NPCs in Skyrim do have unique and colorful personalities, though it is not always obvious from your dialogue with them. Take Wilhelm, for instance. Bland innkeeper guy. Yet in the DB quest line you find out that he likely is the one who put the hit out on the orc bard. They don't hit you over the head with it, but considering Skyrim has so many NPCs, they are tons more fleshed out than the few characters in DA2 who have interaction.

And I'm sorry, much as I love FNV, Obsidian's characters are not that "deep." They write more archetypes than fully fleshed characters. It was something that bothered me until I figured out how that storytelling style works and why it can be so good. In similar fashion- Bethesda's storytelling style is more about the larger epic of the world and the quirky, often very dark individual stories that people the landscape. It is not soap opera or novel style, but it works very well IMO. If people insist that all games be alike, you'll just end up with a mealy mess.

A few NPC's are unique and colorful in Skyrim, and I agree that like with Kodlak's journal, some are much deeper than revealed thru the dialogue. But while NPC's may have some backstory does not make them interesting or colorful; sometimes they are irritating; worthy of avoidance. The little girl bully in Whiterun, and almost the entire cast of Agent of Mara pop into mind here, as I go out of my way now to run into either.

Personally, I do not mind having some silent NPC;'s; guessing several don't seeing as there is a Skyrim mod available to do just that. And I do not need a cast of thousands; the key players are fine, especially when they are more meaningful to the story and the player; not just skin deep.

Yes Ma'am!!  Normally I switch out between dual wielding my axes with any combo of sword/mace/axe with shield (usually dictated by the enchantment on the weapon).   It's situation dependent.  If I need higher defense, against say...a vipers nest of those sonofabeeochin necros/pyros, I put on the shield (with elemental protection perk) and charge at them.  In most all other situations, I'll dual wield; especially now since I tend to get horded alot with the "More NPCs" mod.  It really helps to level one handed; which levels very slow normally.  My first PC primarily wielded dual fire axes with a soul capture at the ready to fill soul gems.

I just really like the way the dwarven war axe looks.  It's just classic.
