I'm currently playing Skyrim and I'm loving the game. But, there's one problem I have with Skyrim: there are quests that ask me to join certain groups like the Companions, Storm Cloak, Imperial Legion, etc, groups that the game haven't told me who they are, what they stand for, why should I join them. Also, there's that rebellion and I'm lost why it happened.

I really want to know if the game will give me more information about those topics or if I will have to search on the internet about them.

Skyrim is my first TES game, by the way.

As mentioned before, definitely become an avid reader and read everything you can get your hands on.  This will assist greatly in immersion into the world and understanding factions, guilds, races, and help you gain a serviceable knowledge of the history of Skyrim in particular and Tamriel in general.

My recommendation would be to travel...A LOT...meet people, kick some butts, and find as many locations across the map as possible just free roaming and doing miscellaneous quests that you will naturally pick up along the way.  Exposure to the environment alone will provide you more than enough information to make informed decisions about what direction your character should go in.

I would just say, don't be in a hurry.  TES games are not corridored, nor do they require you to march through objectives on some contrived or controlled timeline.  You do things when you want, not when the developers tell you it's time.  Skyrim is a huge land, full of experiences and discoveries waiting to be had.  Relax...take your time...enjoy the experience...and kick those necromages' asses for us all!

I'm about to start a new playthrough. And I have NO IDEA what I want to play.

So far I've done:

1) an in-your-face Orc warrior
2) a Range/melee Nord Hybrid
3) a Jack of all trades Dunmer

I do know that I don't want to play a pure mage type. My Dunmer did a lot of magic, but was constantly falling back to his bow and his sword because magic just isn't all its cracked up to be. I am contemplating a pure stealthy rogue type, but my Nord did that part time, and I kinda wanna try something else.

I think I'll just do another Nord and see where the whim takes me. I actually haven't ever tried a Dagger playthrough yet. Maybe I'll do that.

Personally I just LOVE the mix of Illusion and stealth assasin skills (daggers and, this time around, also a bow... which i guess is better then destruction magic).
But going the standard route, light armor, enchanting, smithing, etc.  I've found I was spending too much time spamming craft skills and too little time actually playing. And while playing stealthy, I had to pay for armor training, because it wasn't increasing much naturally. Plus once I topped enchanting and smithing, there wasn't much challenge left in the game. Also pretty much nothing I was finding/getting as rewards was of any use (other then to learn the enchantment sometimes).

So I rerolled as an Altmer Illusion-focused mage-assasin again, but this time around with NO smithing (well, I  did sharpen the vanilla elven dagger I bought... but with 16 skill and no perks) and NO enchanting. I rely on stealth, Illusion and Alteration spells/perks for protection. My character is squishy... but this is how he should be and this is how I like him. And I'm playing and exploring, rather then wasting time in the forge, or at the enchanting table.
And loot I find/get is actually meaningfull and usefull sometimes and I'm happy about it.
I put two perks in Conjuration to get the Mystic Binding and use the Bound Bow in conjunction with stealth for tough spots and distance combat. It's more fun then Destruction so far. I've just finished the College quest line. Guess I will need to look for some nice dagger next (maybe the DB quests... or Mehrunes'...)... or maybe get the Gauldur amulet - for the first time it would be actually usefull for me.

I would encourage everyone to try a similar type of character. It's immensly rewarding to find usefull and valuable loot/rewards, rather then smelting/selling material only! And it's fun not to be immortal and to be limited by Magicka pool.

@ Yrkoon - RE: Mage

I agree with the disappointment of Magic I had in my initial experience. It was based on getting a lot of Destruction spells and perks that simply did not hold water compared to non-magical options, and I abandoned the build when stalling in the 20's, when other builds had no such problems.

But my next attempt was quite a lot of fun; generalising in several schools, and taking several synergy perks that aided the entire class; not only a single school (eg; Magic Resistance, Necromage, Quiet casting, etc). And it helps to remember that while one shots are fun, they rarely help add increases to a skill; tis the multiple hits that often do this. A good reason to use a mundane sword once in a while instead of one dripping in enchantments.

Now I still have not used Alteration armors, preferring instead to go with Heavy or Light armors and utilizing Dragon Priest masks. And while I achieved top scores in the Skills of choice, I have yet to see all the perks in any build; simply have not needed them.

Reason I posted this is because you have enjoyed challenging builds in this and other games, and seem to like exploring possibilities others tend to dismiss (eg; 2H as being too slow in DAO). And while Magic may not present the same killing numbers as a well placed maul, it is rather amusing to see the opponents scrap amongst themselves, casting Conjurations past doors and thin walls, and slowly depleting the health of opposing casters with a Cloak and a smile.

I think people are playing it as if Destruction were like One Handed or Archery for a non-mage character. Whereas Skyrim magic forces you to specialize in a couple schools- which for a pure mage is totally appropriate.

Well destruction magic becomes as powerful as melee or archery with Balanced Magic mod, but the other schools still lag behind.

Playing as a pure mage in Skyrim almost made me want to replay Oblivion as a mage.

For me, it was about finding the right key for the lock in question, amd more Schools meant access to more keys. Destruction simply lacks the proper punch as a one way answer to all questions; not the Skeleton key I was hoping for initially.

Funny thing for me is, I am now a huge fan of the Restoration School, considering the tutor, game ref and all.

But who doesn't love Restoration ?

I've been leveling as an Archer with Restoration only and since I've installed PISE, Deadly Dragon, Balanced Magic and play on Master diffificulty it really forces me to no longer just sit there and take damage it's refreshing.

I really don't think that was a design choice. Frankly if you fight a mage out in the wilds they can be really hard to kill while your own Magic abilites aren't even comparable.

I have a lot of respect for the Restoration school.  Skyrim could use more healers.

LOL My first thought was [Colette nasal voice] Restoration is a perfectly valid school of magic.  [/colette]

For me, this encounter is especially painful after the events of the Civil War. My Orcs have played the fateful guard meet with a No Prisoners mentality, allowing further events to clear their records of any possible bounties. Rather cathartic....

RE: Restoration magic - some of the better perks in the game for my style of play. And has anyone tried answering  Colette in a negative manner? Not me; not even my Orcs....

Ya, seriously who would surrender to the guards, I was thane FFS and I had already completed the main story arch, therefore I was a hero in Skyrim to many.

I think my next character will be either a Breton mage or a Redguard dual-wielding curved swords. Curved. Swords.

Any word on official expansion or content oriented DLC etc coming out any time soon?
I have played me some Skyrim and really enjoyed it. Still, I'm 100% sure I will only ever wanna play though it ONCE. With this in mind I refuse to..spend it away til I can turn it into an endlessly epic marathon made of heaptons of good content oriented mods on piled on top of fair heap of officially released content like expansions!

In a way, Skyrim isn't even officially released yet in my books. I bet it takes around 2 years still:l

They said the DLC will be substantial and not small little things. Probably in March or so they may say something. I need to get back into my Nord character. His name is Asgeir (It means Spear of God.)

Only news is not really news, it's a rumor based on a patent filing for a piece of software content called Dawnguard. But it seems people watch these patent filings because in the past they've been predictors of game releases. They say it's usually about 3 months before the game is announced.

Whatever that all means.

Only in RPGs so people feel it is insulting to surrender to the guards for running roughshod over the law :wizard:

Been playing a lot of ME3 MP, so haven't been around for a while.  A few screens from a recent foray into Skyrim.

This poor bandit forgot the first rule of combat archery:  When faced with a shield charging Nord, who is deflecting all your arrows...Drop your bow and run like hell.

Picked up a custom companion as well.  She is a dual-wielding beast.  She and my PC tag teaming some schlep sent by someone on his increasing list of enemies.

I have been finishing off FONV, some ME3 MP, and a DA2 run I had not finished and wanted to get out of the way.

I have to say that ME3 has some very fun MP.
If only 99% of people realized THEY ARE ON A TEAM AND SHOULD HEAL PEOPLE.

^Yeah, I'm a total team player. Wish everyone thought that way...especially Silver and above. Can't finish them without at least some rudimentary teamwork. Best just to play with friends if you have the option. At least they'll pick your carcass up off the ground when you need them to!

If there is something worse than the AI followers, it must be the AI leaders.

Just finished the Waking Nightmare quest for the first (and probably last) time, and while I admire the VO, having to prod, poke, and Unrelenting Shout the NPC around the area made for too many reloads, and too much wasted time. Plus I did not want the relic for this Dragonborn.

Now I am seeking Azura's Star; hoping it is solo.

@Addai67 and @Barbarossa2010

I really appreciate your comments. I think I will re-start to read those books. In the beginning of the game I was reading them, but I stopped because the universe of the game didn't catch my attention at that time. But now (after around 30hrs in my playthrough) it has grown on me, just like the elves (I think they are really ugly in Skyrim, but I don't that anymore).

Also, I really wish this game had some kind of aim assist; god knows how many times I missed an Ice Spike. That wasn't a problem in Fallout 3 and NV because of VATS. Skyrim doesn't have such luxury :/
