Yes, you must be in sneak mode and standing right behind them - the sneak attack must also be able to kill them in a single hit to trigger the throat-slitting animation (which if you have the appropriate perk will happen almost every time on normal enemies).

I usually put points in Backstab and Assassin's Blade, but since I never try it, they don't do me much good (yet). Derp. Thanks, I'll try that.

Edit: Is there a recommended damage rating on the weapon, for that to work? I assume that with those perks, a dagger would be recommended, right? I always smith, enchant, and sell those. I can't imagine actually keeping one.

I love using throw voice.

Attract a huge mob....then FIREBALL!

Also at max level its like on a two second recharge.
Very handy to use.

Also silly!
"HEY SKEEVER BUTT! HEY MELON NOSE! HEY TROLL BAIT!"

I find animal allegiance handy for animals to leave me alone when I'm on my travels. Sometimes i dont feel like fighting, so I'll just shout. Illusion spells are handy for this, too.

It's kind of funny seeing a bear or a sabretooth cat charging at me through the woods, casually get hit with a fear Illusion spell, and immediately turn tail and book it out of there as if I'm the lord of darkness himself.

And no, I don't even have a Kinect - how exactly does it function with Skyrim, anyway? Do you actually have to say "Fus... ro dah!" out loud to trigger the Shout?

I have sneaked up on people countless times with my assassin, but I never got the kill move.:?

^ I did get it one time, when I killed The Gourmet, but it happened so fast, I had no idea what I did. I kinda just sat there with my jaw dropped for a second. Kill animations are awesome.

Is Sheogorath in my game or something?

Here I was walking towards Kynesgrove I look up because I heard something. THEN SEE 4 SPIDERS COMING TOWARDS ME FROM ABOVE!

I freaked but they landed all around me dead, with a thump.
Then it gets even more weird later on I fight a dragon, but make a mistake and am getting beaten up. Only for this mammoth to show up form nowhere and beat the dragon up.

So...yeah I think okay things cant get any more weird.
I turn around and go walking up a mountain...only to run right into a group of hunters all pointing arrows at me.

Only for them to suddenly shoot a necromancer wanting revenge for the Azura Star quest. I kept walking and found Miaq on top of a mountain talking about werebears.

So I put my game down and am waiting for it to be less crazy.

I'm pretty sure you can be using a single dagger (i.e. no dual wielding or shields)

Sheogorath does indeed meddle in your affairs when you're randomly wandering in Skyrim.  I'm convinced of that.  And sometimes he helps you out.

True story: I was walking around, minding my own business, looking for that 20th Jazbay grape  I needed to complete the quest for that Nirnroot farmer  down south,  when some crazy old woman came up  to me begging me to use Webbajack on her.  So I did.  It turned her into a  bunny or some such.  That's fine.  I knew  about that encounter already.  It happened to me before in one of my previous games.

A couple of minutes later, I've moved on.  Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a dead hagraven falls from the sky and lands right at my feet. So, I do what any adventurer does.  I loot its body.  I find  a hagraven feather (of course) and.... a jazbay grape!   Awesome.  Thank you Sheogorath!

Amazing sequence!!! Sounds fun. The spiders was a (funny) bug, the rest in game. Mammoths have super high HP.

Haha! That story makes me so happy, I could just tear out your intestines and strangle you with them!

No seriously, that is pretty friggin' awesome. The greatest thing the Prince of Madness has ever done for me is cause a random dead dragon to rain down in front of me - I got a free soul, dragon bones, and dragon scales.
Thanks, Uncle Sheo! :wizard:

Not when you have 15x sneak damage plus backstab:devil:

I have to wonder, though, if backstab stacks; I've got it enchanted on my dragonscale gloves AND on my armor. Am I getting 60x damage, or *just* 30x?

A dagger is preferable with Assasin's Blade, yes. Probably a single one, I don't think you get the animation while dual-wielding. It's also a great idea to use the Dark Brotherhood Shrouded Gloves/Gauntlets to double the damage output. With this setup I can drop most enemies in one hit with 0 perks in One Handed.

Oh, did I already mention that the Illusion spells from the Calm/Pacify line are a huge help in setting up sneak attacks and levelling Sneak? They are basically an "I win" button (except for dragons). At least as long as you invest in the relevant amplifying perks at higher levels, of course. That on Master difficulty too. Rarely on highest level bosses you need to dual-cast these to be effective.

Ah, that may explain it. I use two daggers and press both keys when I backstab. I think by now I can kil most enemies with one dagger, but two used to be necessary to take down bandit chiefs and such in one sneak attack.

All good stuff, thanks! I always use Muffle (Illusion is usually my best/highest skill tree), but haven't tried out Calm. I seriously must be in a dream sequence when I play, because there are so many things in retrospect that I don't even try, that I have to scratch my head at. I think I get into a specific rhythm, and don't deviate much. It's my stubborn nature, I guess.

I can't wait to try all these things out!

Makes me wonder if I've had some of these things happen, too... like, are all of the dead that fall from the sky presents from Sheogorath? He really does like me! Hooray! *does happy dance, spins around, then faints*

I've only been back in the game for a few hours, and I've had a couple of random dead creatures and/or persons fall out of the sky right around me. All were lootable of course, so I didn't complain. The weirdest thing that happened though was when I was up north trying to level my bow, shot a wolf, and out of nowhere two dead wolves (neither, the one I shot) came flying right past me like bullets, landing just behind me. I admit it, it scared the living sh-- out of me.

Eh, shook it off, got some gold, a few pelts I needed, and moved on to Saarthal to meet up with Toldfir, since I have yet to actually do the College of Winterhold questline.

Sheogorath may very well be possessing the game.

I was having a bit of a problem with getting the death sequence with a stealth assassin kill.

My son advised me that he made sure to have the best armor that fortified in achieving that and most of all to make sure that the weapon he used had a lot of damage to the victim intended.

Otherwise, a higher leveled victim wouldn't succumb to it. He said in order to get it, your total damage has to be greater than their life's XP. For the most part, I think he's right.
Having as many things to add helps if you don't have the Assassin's Blade skill perk yet.

Freaking Sheogorath.

So here I was near Darkwater crossing.

Suddenly I see Aela and Ria running past.....then a naked Skjor butt sliding across the road after them....serves me right for having all that Skooma last night.

Outside of that I just dropped a diamond in Riften and saw Mjoll kill:
Two Guards, Aerin, the blacksmith, and the meat saleswoman.

Then Maven slit her throat.
Then I felt bad and reloaded.

Okay, I need a little help. I haven't played Skyrim in so long that when I tried to pick it up again I was completely lost. I want to start over and build an assassin, but don't want to ignore two handed weapons completely. Any ideas where to start

If you want to be an assassin, I'd say the sneak tree is the first you have to invest in, so that you can get assassin's blade to mutliply your backstab damage. Then you can sneak up on the thougher enemies and (almost) kill them with a nice dual backstab.

Regular diel-wielding of daggers doesn't do that much damage in my experience. My light-armored khajiti assassin was pretty much screwed everytime she got attacked by a bear or a sbre cat up until a relatively high level.

Does any of you actually roleplay your character, or play as realistic as possible (e.g. serious roleplay)? I'm giving this "serious roleplay" a shot for the first time right now. I just started a new playthrough. I already wrote a character down on paper and decided what his backstory was going to be and why he came to Skyrim. Now I'm going to "seriously roleplay" this guy during my adventure in Skyrim. For my serious roleplay, I've laid out some rules for myself:

My "serious roleplay" rules:

1. Only do the quests that fit my character's personality and ambitions.
2. Only join the guilds and factions that fit my character's ambitions.
3. No fast-travel.
4. Drink and eat every in-game day.
5. I'm not going to use any spells, AT ALL (because I'm going to play a Nord warrior).
6. Death is death. If my character dies, I'm going to delete my character.

The character I'm going to play:

Name: Mjullnir
Race: Nord
Born in: Hammerfell

History:

Mjullnir has lived his entire life in Hammerfell with his parents. Mjullnir's father was a Nord sailor, his mother a Nord trader. When the Great War against the Aldmeri Dominion started, Mjullnir's father joined the Redguard army to protect Hammerfell against the invading elves. When the war ended with the While-Gold Concordat, things started to get bad for Mjullnir's family. Mjullnir's father was a true Nord to the core and as a true Nord, he has always been a firm Talos worshipper. As such, Mjullnir's father spoke freely of his hatred for the High-elves and called the emperor a damn coward and traitor. Hammerfell was in dispair. The emperor sold a piece of Hammerfell's land to the Aldmeri Dominion, which caused an uproar among the Redguard and the other citizens of Hammerfell. During the rebellion agaist the Dominion in Hammerfell, Mjullnir's father got killed by a Thalmor agent.
From that day forth, Mjullnir has sworn to avenge his father. When Mjullnir heard of Ulfric Stormcloak's rebellion in Skyrim, Mjullnir decided to go back to Skyrim, to join the Stormcloaks and to avenge his father. Mjullnir will do ANYTHING for a chance to wreak havoc upon the Thalmor. He will kill any Thalmor agent on sight and he will take very chance to sabotage the Thalmor's effort in Skyrim.

Mjullnir will probably join the Compansions to become stronger as a true Nord warrior. Then he'll join the Stormcloaks. He'll also seek out the Greybeard, as Mjullnir sees this as an opportunity to gain extra power. Mastering the power of the Thu'um is very tempting for the power-hungry Mjullnir, who will do everything to gain extra power.
And maybe, just maybe, Mjullnir's fate will take a strange turn, leading Mjullnir to the Dark Brotherhood. Will he join them? Maybe, but only if it brings Mjullnir closer to sabotaging the Thalmor in Skyrim....

Because Mjullnir lived his entire live in Hammerfell, Mjullnir is not your average Nord. Mjullnir's skin is a lot darker than that of an average Nord. Mjullnir's warpaint on his face is yellow, the same color as his father and his Redguard friends wore when fighting the Aldmeri Dominion in Hammerfell.
