I don't see the big problem anyway. Why not just start a new Character?
Usually when one of my characters gets to about level 60, He begins contemplating retirement. And if there was ever a good reason to start with a fresh character, Dawnguard is it.
I prefer to create one character and have said character be my canon character. Non canons nonexistant.
For example, while I created a bunch of characters in ME1, I only carried my very first character through the series.
DAO? Several characters, but only my very first carried into later installments.
DA2? Only created one character.
Other games(non Bioware)? One character.
Skyrim? One character. I'm doing everything I can with him. Level 81, completed most of the quests available, still has a few to do but most quest chains are completed.
Dawnguard will be an addition he will welcome.
How does that work, as you can't join both Stormcloaks and Imperials and you most likely will need to choose between joining the vampire or vampire hunter factions?
In my case, I have really enjoyed playing several characters that are completely different, almost polar opposites.
For example, my first Skyrim character was a sneaky Dunmer kleptomaniac who stole everything that wasn't nailed down and the only faction he joined was the Thieves' Guild (completed about 70% of it after a few hundred hours of playing and reaching level 40). He was very weak in the sense that he could be easily one-shotted, but with perks like Assassin's Blade and Shadow Warrior, he could sneak up on enemies and assassinate almost anyone with one blow. Of course if he got caught he was as good as dead.
My second character was a Nord barbarian who preferred to rush headfirst into any battle with a two-handed warhammer. Sneaking around or using magic spells is strictly for cowards in his view. This is not a guy you would ever see poring over arcane books in a library. Completed Companions, Stormcloaks and main quest after about 150 hours and reaching level 27.
My third character was a Breton mage who would never be caught dead hanging around with a bunch of sweaty warriors, so the only faction she joined was the College of Winterhold. Never used any weapons or armor at all, strictly spells. I did about 50% of the mage's college questline and then started a new character after around 200 hours and reaching level 29.
I just started a new character, an Argonian, using the Live Another Life alternate start mod, with "surprise me" - his origin story was as follows:
"You were a passenger aboard a merchant ship on the way to Solitude when the ship struck an iceberg off the coast and then capsized. Make your escape from the doomed vessel, retreiving any useful items on your way out, then make your way to the nearby ice floes. From there, you'll quickly realize it's a LONG way off to shore."
He is a sort of Argonian witch doctor character with a deep familiarity with nature. Using Frostfall, Deployable Traps and Throwing Weapons mods provides some ranger kind of gameplay. Apart from the traps he crafts and sets, and some poisons he throws at enemies, he mostly uses only conjured weapons or farming tools (like a shovel from the Handyman mod), and tribal fur armor or mage robes. Uses a lot of illusion and restoration spells as well as poison crafting.
I'm trying out the mounted combat from Patch 1.6 with this character and some mods that will make higher level gameplay more challenging on Master, like Unofficial Skyrim Patch, Deadly Dragons and ASIS.
With my next character I'm really looking forward to finally joining the Dark Brotherhood and possibly the Imperial army - maybe a Khajiit assassin.
